North Vallejo Community Center Grand Re-opening

After nine months, the Greater Vallejo Recreation District (GVRD) recently completed renovations of the North Vallejo Community Center.

The renovation was funded by Measure K and the former Flosden Acres Redevelopment Area Allocation, a total budget of $2.25 million. The building was measured at 2600 square feet at the beginning of the project, and increased to 4400 square feet following the completion of renovations. Improvements include new restrooms, flooring, heating and air conditioning, windows, and current building code upgrades.

The former City of Vallejo Redevelopment Agency allocated approximately $1.7 million from the Flosden Acres Redevelopment Area to fund the much needed improvements to the center in 2002. Due to the lack of funding to complete the project, Measure K, passed by Vallejo voters several years ago, allowed GVRD to augment the redevelopment allocation and brought the project into fruition. GVRD and the City of Vallejo are inviting neighbors and members of the community to the ribbon cutting and celebration ceremony of the new community center.

The event will be held at the center, located at 1121 Whitney Avenue, on October 29, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Click here to read the press release, and visit GVRD.org for more information.
Solano County Hosts Prescription Drug Take-Back Event

The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) along with the Solano County Department of Resource Management and Environmental Services will host a Prescription Drug Take-Back event on Saturday, October 22.

Solano County residents are encouraged to bring their unwanted or expired prescription drugs for safe disposal at eight convenient locations throughout the county. The National Prescription Drug Take-Back event was created in order to provide awareness about expired prescription drugs, which potentially can lead to drug overdoses and poisonings.

Vallejo residents can visit the Vallejo Police Department located at 111 Amador Street, between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Residents should remove all personal information from items or empty contents into a Ziploc bag. All liquids and creams should be sealed or confined to a plastic bag to avoid spillage, and needles, sharps, as well as lancets will not be accepted. Click here to read the full press release.
McCune Collection to Expand Public Hours

Starting this month, the McCune Rare Book & Art Collection, located in the lower-level of the John F. Kennedy Library, will be open to the public on two Saturdays every month from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. for a trial period of 4 to 6 months.

For several years, the Collection has been open to the public on first and third Tuesdays, which will continue during the initial Saturday trial period. The introduction of regular Saturday hours was in direct response to a growing interest in experiencing the Collection sparked by the McCune's participation in Vallejo's Second Friday Art Walk.

The McCune Collection will feature the US Forest Service's permanent art collection as part of the continuing "Vision of the Wild" gallery events on October 22. Visitors may conveniently enter the McCune Room through the outdoor staircase at the corner of Georgia and Santa Clara Street. After October, the public will be able to visit the Mccune Collection every first or third Saturday from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., as an addition to the Vallejo Farmers Market.
