New CarnaVallejo Event at Farmer's Market

On Saturday, August 27, the first annual CarneVallejo event will be held during the Georgia Street Farmer's Market. 

People of all ages are encouraged to enjoy the Carnevale-themed event, which includes art and music by James Henry's Hands on Fire Band, as well as Aztec performances. There will also be costume, limbo, and salsa contests for the whole family to enjoy.

CarneVallejo is sponsored by Recology Vallejo, McCree Goudeau Gallery, Solano AIDS Coalition (SAC), The African American Music Assiociation (AAMA), and SolTrans.

Visions of the Wild Festival

The U.S. Forest Service and the Vallejo Community Arts Foundation (VCAF) will host the third annual Visions of the Wild Festival, which takes place from September 15 to September 18. 

Promoting the theme "Wild in the City," the festival will celebrate the animals and plants that live within our community and examine urban wildlife from every viewpoint. The festival will feature field trips, art exhibits, guest speakers, cruises and film screenings located in Vallejo and American Canyon. Click here for the full schedule. 

Five art exhibits related to the theme will also be on display throughout the festival, and will feature original pieces from local artists. Festival venues include the Temple Art Lofts Gallery, Artiszen Cultural Arts Center, Bill Bloom Gallery, the Vallejo Naval & Historical Museum and the Empress Theatre. People of all ages are encouraged to attend the festival; all events are free and open to the public on a first come, first served basis with exception of the weekend River Cruises.

Solano County Library Seeks Public Input for Future Services

Solano County Library is requesting Vallejo residents to take a brief survey about the services and resources they would most like to see offered by their local libraries. The online survey is part of a strategic planning process that Solano County Library has launched to obtain comprehensive feedback about library services from residents. 

"This is a chance for residents in Vallejo to have a say about library services now and in the future," said Bonnie Katz, Director of Library Services. In addition to the online survey, the Solano County Library will host a town hall meeting for citizens to attend on Wednesday, September 21, 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the John F. Kennedy Library, 505 Santa Clara Street.

Solano College Hosts Groundbreaking Ceremony
 
On August 17, Solano Community College held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new automotive technology center in Vallejo.

Notable officials attended the event, including U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson, Board of Trustees President Michael Martin and Solano President and Superintendent Dr. Celia Esposito-Noy who shoveled dirt from the ground, marking the official groundbreaking of the facility. 

During the ceremony, Thompson informed the audience that the project was important to him, as he worked in automotive repair before his career in politics. Other speakers included Automotive Technology Instructor Paul Hidy, who acknowledged the district and students for making the new facility a possibility.

Located near the Columbus Parkway Auto Mall, the building will occupy over 30,000 square feet, comprised of classrooms, instructional bays, a tutoring center/conference room and other automotive services.
