Great Vallejo Race- April 30 and May 1

The San Francisco Bay racing season begins on Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1, at the 117th Annual Great Vallejo Race, hosted by the Vallejo Yacht Club! Over 200 boats from Vallejo, San Francisco, Berkeley and other nearby locations are expected to participate in this event. The race begins near Berkeley Circle on Saturday Morning, rounds a single weather mark near Alcatraz, and then heads to Vallejo.

Sunday morning, racers will line up to ship off for the second part of the competition. Race times from Saturday and Sunday will be combined, and the boat with the best combined time will be named winner. Festivities include prizes and giveaways, and a tour of the Gary Mull-designed Custom sailboats. 

Listen to live music from DW Edwards & Heavy Weather Band, singer Karyssa Lynne and friends, and vocalist / guitarist James Glantz. Enjoy food from vendors such as Bill's Chuckwagon BBQ and Nellie's Oysters and Seafood. The Great Vallejo Race can be enjoyed from the Vallejo Yacht Club, Mare Island hills and bluffs, the Carquinez Bridge and a variety of other locations within the Bay Area.

May Day Cruise- May 1

Join guides Captain Ronn Patterson and Mare Island Heritage Trust's Myrna Hayes as they embark on an exciting adventure! Climb aboard the River Dolphin with Dolphin Charters and learn about the history of Mare Island and view the Napa River wetlands and wildlife.  

The River Dolphin will depart at 11:00 a.m. from the Vallejo Marina "K" dock, located at 42 Harbor Way, and will return at 1:30 p.m. Make sure to bring your own lunch; snacks and hot drinks will be provided.

Visit Vallejo Luncheon- May 4

Visit Vallejo (formerly the Vallejo Convention & Visitors Bureau) is hosting their 25th Annual Tourism Luncheon and Board of Directors Installation at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom on Wednesday, May 4.

Celebrating National Tourism Week, this luncheon is held every year at the beginning of travel season to highlight the economic benefits of the travel and tourism industry, and to install the bureau's new officers and directors. This year, the luncheon will celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Six Flags Discovery Kingdom moving from Redwood City to Vallejo. The luncheon features former Vallejo Mayor Terry Curtola as the keynote speaker, and Brian Wright from Visit California will be presenting on California's tourism efforts.

The event begins at 11:00 a.m. with a reception followed by lunch at 12:00 p.m., keynote address, and a raffle. Admission is $45.00 per person.

Vallejo Chamber of Commerce Winemakers Dinner- May 6

The Vallejo Chamber of Commerce's 9th Annual Winemakers
Dinner and Auction will be held on Friday, May 8.

Glen Cove Garage Sale- May 7

On May 7, the Glen Cove Community Association will be hosting its annual neighborhood garage sale. There will be maps of participating houses available at the Glen Cove Center near Safeway. Sale times are between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Visit the large Glen Cove Community to turn trash into treasures. Shop for clothing, books, toys, household knickknacks, lawn and garden tools, sports equipment and much more!

Sacramento Street Bridge Open House- May 11

Attend the Community Open House hosted by the City of Vallejo on May 11. Residents will be given information and feedback on the Sacramento Street Bridge Replacement Project. With the existing Sacramento Street Bridge being over a century old, some of the goals of this project include improving public safety, implementing seismic upgrades, and adhering to railroad clearance requirements.

Participants of the open house will be able to view exhibits, maps and schedule of the project. Meet representatives from the City of Vallejo and project officials as they will be able to answer your questions about the upcoming project.

The open house starts at 5:30 p.m. and ends at 7:30 p.m., and will be held at the Vallejo Educational Academy located at 301 Farragut Avenue.

Downtown Second Friday Art Walk- May 12

Don't miss the Vallejo Art Walk happening on May 12, which occurs on the second Friday of every month. Located in the Downtown Vallejo Arts and Entertainment District, this event encourages the sale of art and also celebrates the growth of artists moving to the area.

Most Businesses and galleries are located within the central area of the downtown district, and easily accessible by foot. Locations include The Hub Vallejo, Artiszen Gallery, Indian Alley Antiques, Pieced on Earth, Design by David, and many more!  

A map of the area highlights all of the stores participating in the art walk. Artists will also be set up on sidewalks and indoors.

Vallejo PAL Golf Classic- May 13 

Vallejo PAL will be hosting the 37th Annual Golf Classic at the Mare Island Golf Course on May 13. Entry fee is $135 per golfer, which includes golf, a golf cart, box lunch, dinner, and tee prize. Dinner will be held at the Mare Island Museum, located on Railroad Avenue and 8th Street.

The golf classic will include a four-person scramble in a handicap format and will reward prizes to participants for the Longest Drive and Closest to the Pins.  This action-packed event will also include raffle prizes, silent auctions, and contest holes. Check-in begins at 9:30 a.m., and starts at 11:00 a.m.

Loma Vista Spring Festival- May 14

Get ready for Loma Vista Farm's Spring Festival on May 14! This annual event gives friends and family the chance to come out and visit the farm. Enjoy the sights and view the year-long projects that have been completed. Loma Vista Farm provides hands-on, educational activities for students and children of all ages, and abilities.

The festival begins at 11:00 a.m. and
ends at 4:00 p.m. at the Loma Vista Farm, located at 150 Rainier Avenue. Admission is free, activity tickets are $.50.

Taekwondo Championships at Jesse Bethel High- May 14

The 2016 Golden State International Taekwondo Championship will take place at Jesse Bethel High on May 14. Championship belts will be awarded to Jr. and Sr. Black Belt Form and Sparring Division. For the full list of divisions, click here. Additional events include board breaking and using creative forms/weapons.

The registration fee is $85 for 1 event, and $10 more for additional events. General spectator tickets are $10, tickets for spectators ages 4-12 are $7, and children under 3 are free.

Vallejo Choral Society: Misa Criolla- May 14 and 15

On May 14 and 15, the Vallejo Choral Society will be hosting Misa Criolla, written by Argentine composer, Ariel Ramirez. Misa Criolla combines the choral setting of text written in Spanish with Argentine percussion and Argentine-Andean instruments. The Vallejo Choral Society's symphonic and chamber choirs and the Campanelli Children's Choir will both perform works written by South American composers.

Misa Criolla will be held at the First Presbyterian Church located at 1350 Amador Street.

The show times are as follows:
Saturday, May 14, 7:00 p.m.
Sunday, May 15, 3:00 p.m.

Carnevale Fantastico- May 14 and 15

After a very successful first year, the Italian Renaissance and Cultural Festival will be returning to Blue Rock Springs Park! On May 14 and 15, enjoy events such as glass blowing, lace making, and historical reenactments featuring Michelangelo, Galileo, and Leonardo da Vinci. Carnvale Fantastico is an experience that the whole family can enjoy by eating amazing food, listening to traditional music, or watching unforgettable performances.

Last year the festival attracted over 3500 attendees, and over 5000 people are expected to attend this year. Sponsors of this event include SolTrans, GVRD, Vallejo Chamber of Commerce, Visit Vallejo California, Times-Herald, and Recology.

General tickets are $12.50, and children under 12 are free.

Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum Garden Tour and Festival- May 15

The Vallejo Garden Tour and Festival is a major annual fundraiser for the Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum. Visit nine beautiful gardens throughout Vallejo homes. Box lunches are available to purchase from City Lights Caf� and Catering.

In addition to featuring beautiful gardens throughout the city, the Vallejo Garden Tour will once again be holding the downtown Vallejo Garden Festival this year. The Festival will feature plant sales, crafts, antiques, gourmet food vendors, local non-profits, and fine art.

The Vallejo Garden Tour will be on Sunday, May 15 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tickets are $40 for the general public or $35 for Museum Members, and are available at the Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum, the Vallejo Convention and Visitors Bureau in the Ferry Terminal, and at Zoey June Gift and Garden, located at 1426 Tennessee Street.
Vallejo Public Works Open House- 
May 15 

In celebration of National Public Works, the City of Vallejo Public Works Department will be hosting their annual open house.
The open house will be held at the Municipal Marina, located at 42 Harbor Way, and attendees will see demonstrations of new equipment and learn about the responsibilities of Public Works employees.

Join the Department of Public Works as they demonstrate how to operate the Mare Island Causeway Bridge at 12:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m. Watch Public Works staff use their radios to communicate with bridge operators to raise and lower the bridge, and show the public how boats pass under the bridge.The event starts at 12:00 p.m. and ends at 4:00 p.m.

Vallejo Admirals Season Opener-     May 31

The Vallejo Admirals will begin their season on May 31, and will face the Sonoma Stompers. They will be hosting games at Wilson Park beginning at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 5:05 p.m. on Saturdays, and 1:05 p.m. on Sundays.

Solano Land Trust Events 

Breakin a Sweat on Vallejo Swett Ranch- May 7

Get a workout and take a guided hike of Vallejo Swett Ranch, Solano Land Trust's property surrounding the Greater Vallejo Recreation District's McIntyre Ranch. The hike will be led by knowledgeable Land Trust docents. Vallejo Swett Ranch is usually closed to the public, so take advantage of this free opportunity!

Participants must be prepared to hike 3 to 4 miles of rugged and steep terrain, and hills that consist of sticky seeds, thorny plants, and poison oak. Be aware that there is no drinking water or available restrooms, and dogs are not allowed. Make sure to bring hiking boots or suitable running shoes for the trail, long socks pulled over long pants, layered clothing, and a backpack with water and snacks.

The meeting place will be at McIntyre Ranch which is located at the end of St. John's Mine Road in Vallejo. Click here for a map. Space is limited and pre-registration is required.

Trail Crew at Lynch Canyon- May 14

Make a difference and volunteer to improve trails and fix fences at Lynch Canyon on May 14. As a thank you for volunteering, there will be free parking, and free pizza will be provided to those who pre-register online.

Volunteers should be prepared to be outdoors for 3 hours, using tools such as shovels and hoes, lifting and carrying materials, and bending over or squatting in dirt. Anyone over the age of 12 is welcome to volunteer; participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult and must bring a liability waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian.

Make sure to bring a backpack with water and snacks, work gloves, sunglasses for eye protection, boots for walking on rough terrain, and long pants. Pre-registration is highly recommended in order to bring enough tools and food for volunteers.

Vallejo Farmers Market- Every Saturday

The Pacific Coast Farmers' Market Association continues to offer Vallejo residents a great selection of local greens, fruits and veggies, ethnic varieties, as well as some specialty booths with baked goods, and handmade soaps and other goodies, all at down-to-earth prices.

There is live music, some prepared food, fresh cut flowers and freshly caught seafood. The farmers' market offers the freshest produce direct from the fields and orchards of California's family farms. The market is open every Saturday, rain or shine, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Georgia Street and Marin Street downtown.



Empress Theatre Events

Little Girl Blue- May 14


On May 14, the Empress Theatre will be hosting a screening of the documentary "Little Girl Blue." This film chronicles the life of the legendary artist Janis Joplin. 

Hailed as one of the most influential rock & roll artists of all time, the documentary provides an in-depth look into the complicated world of Joplin. "Little Girl Blue" is mostly told in Joplin's own words through a series of letters she wrote to her parents, most of them made public through this film. The documentary shines a new light on Joplin, and provides a new understanding of the misunderstood artist.
 
Doors open at 7:30 p.m., film starts at 8:30 p.m.

Comedy with Kevin Camia and Chris Riggins- May 27


Kevin Camia has performed around the world and has been featured on comedy shows such as "Live at Gotham" and Rooftop's Aspen Comedy Festival. Cumia has also been a featured performer at the Outside Lands Festival, the SF Sketchfest and Asia Street Comedy.

Born and raised in Berkeley, CA, Chris Riggins made his comedic debut in February 2009 when he opened for Dave Chappelle. Over the years, Riggins has risen to the top of the comedic ranks, and is also a well-known host throughout California, hosting many shows on the west coast.
