Springstowne Post Office Renaming

In honor of the many accomplishments of Vallejo's own Philmore Graham, the Springstowne Post Office will officially be renamed The Philmore Graham Post Office Building.

Philmore Graham served in the US Air Force and worked at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard. He was the first, and to this day remains the only, African American to hold the position of supervisor at Mare Island's Department of Nuclear Energy. Graham founded the Continentals of Omega Boys and Girls Club in Vallejo, and has since worked with thousands of Vallejo's youth.

Graham was awarded the Good Neighbor Award, the Salute to America Lifetime Merit Award, the Profile of Excellence Award, the Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award, and the "Who's Who" Among Black Americans Award. Additionally, he was named the Omega Man of the Year and Citizen of the Year on multiple occasions.

Graham has earned this honor and recognition through his life's work in which he strived to help others succeed. To celebrate this occasion, the US Postal Service employees, local leaders, members of the Graham family, and other community members will gather together for the renaming of the post office on March 14 at 12:30 p.m. at 100 Admiral Callaghan Lane.

Public Works Wins APWA Award

The City of Vallejo's Monticello Emergency Pipeline Replacement Project was recognized as Project of the Year by the American Public Works Association (APWA), Northern California Chapter, at its annual awards banquet. City of Vallejo Public Works Department staff, led by City Engineer Jill Mercurio and former Assistant Public Works Director-Water Franz Nestlerode, received the award on February 25.

Awards are given in five categories: Structures, Transportation, Environment, Historical Restoration/Preservation and Disaster or Emergency Construction/Repair. Each Category is further divided based on the cost of the project. The awards were established to promote excellence in the management and administration of public works projects by recognizing the alliance and collaboration between the managing agency, the consultant/architect/engineer, and the contractor.

Phase 1 of the construction project won in the "Disaster or Emergency" category for projects under $5 million. It was nominated because of the extraordinary marshalling of resources by staff in terms of how quickly the project was designed, material suppliers identified and those that produced the necessary pipes, and environmental mitigations that were identified and accommodated. This project, including planning and construction, occurred in a little over four months and is now eligible for a National Project of the Year award.

The APWA Awards Program is the most prestigious in the public works world today and annually recognizes outstanding individuals, groups, and chapters who represent excellence in the public works profession.

The project, which will begin its second phase in the coming months, has allowed the City to continue to provide water to customers at a normal rate instead of implementing emergency, mandatory water rationing and 40 percent water use reductions.

Mare Island Brewing Company's New Taproom Hours

Law and Justice Academy

The Law and Justice Academy at Jesse Bethel High School has formed out of a collaboration of members from the legal community to offer a mentorship program for the students aiming for a career in legal and law fields.

Coordinated by Marlo Nisperos, Assistant District Attorney, more than 40 members of the legal community, including many judges and attorneys, and other professionals, have been working with students to expose them to successful professional role models who can encourage and guide them toward their future career path.

In addition to the mentorship program, the Jesse Bethel Law Academy Advisory Board hosted a Dress for Success event earlier this year. The event included soliciting donations for ties for young men and infinity scarves for young women, designing and facilitating workshops on professional dress and etiquette, providing instruction on how to take measurements for proper dress and pants sizes, and setting up a mini-mall where students can shop for a brand new tie or scarf.

The Law and Justice Academy is part of the Vallejo City Unified School District's (VCUSD) Wall-to-Wall (W2W) Academies, an initiative to prepare high school students for college and careers after graduation. Any community member interested in partnering with an academy or serving on an advisory board may contact Cassie Gossett, W2W Coordinator, at 707-556-8921 ext. 50240.
