City of Vallejo Earthquake Aftermath and Assessment

-Vallejo, CA-- August 25, 2014

The City of Vallejo continues to provide response to residents and businesses affected by the 6.0 magnitude earthquake that rattled Napa and Solano Counties on Sunday, August 24 at 3:20 a.m.  City crews will be providing comprehensive inspections throughout the week to determine which additional buildings need to be red-tagged prohibiting use, yellow-tagged for partial use, or green-tagged for full use. The City has requested 5 Engineers and 10 Building Inspectors from the Solano County Office of Emergency Services. One State of California Inspector will be completing an initial damage inspection in preparation of the deployment of an official damage assessment team that will complete a thorough report in response to the State of California Emergency Declaration.  

City Manager Daniel E. Keen will hold a Press Conference at 3:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers of Vallejo City Hall at 555 Santa Clara Street.

Local Updates at of 12 noon:
  • All non-emergency phone calls regarding infrastructure or property damage issues should be directed to the Emergency Operation Center (EOC) by e-mailing  [email protected] or by calling (707) 648-4423..
  • The City is setting up an additional telephone line for citizens to communicate with the City.
  • City staff are currently evaluating what resources might be available to residents and businesses that have suffered losses in the earthquake. The City will be coordinating with other agencies to see what help might be available to Vallejo residents and businesses.
  • There are currently no volunteer opportunities at this time.
Damage Assessment Reporting 12 noon:
  • A total of 7 buildings have been red tagged for non-use, all commercial, including the Post Office located at 485 Santa Clara Street.
  • A total 30 buildings have been yellow tagged for partial specified use, all commercial.
  • There were a total of 13 event related main breaks on August 24. Water has been restored to all residents.  
  • Select businesses on Mare Island are without water primarily due to internal building damage.
  • The Solano County Health & Social Services offices located at 355 and 365 Tuolumne Street have been yellow tagged and are closed to the public until further notice. Solano County employees will contact clients who had appointments at these locations to reschedule or divert clients to the Fairfield office.
The following remains in effect:
  • Residents with brick masonry fireplaces or foundation issues that pose safety concerns should call 911 to request a Fire Department inspection. Non-emergency structural damage issues can be reported to Emergency Operation Center (EOC) by e-mailing to [email protected] or by calling (707) 648-4423.
  • Georgia Street, from Sonoma Blvd. to Marin St., in addition to Indian Alley remain closed until all proper assessments of the 400 block can be completed.
  • Nimitz Avenue remains closed from 7th Street to Bagley on Mare Island.
  • The Salvation Army and American Red Cross are on call to provide services as needed.
Status updates will continue on an as needed basis.  The next scheduled update is at today's press conference.  The City Council will discuss the status of the City response to the earthquake at its meeting on August 26, 2014 beginning at 7:00 p.m. .
