Austin International School
March 26, 2014

This week we have two special items on the agenda, tomorrow's first-ever Family Science Night, and Friday's 4th Annual Grandparents' Day. We have close to 80 children signed up for science night and we know it's going to be a hit! We look forward to seeing our families here having fun and exploring science.

On Friday, we'll be welcoming grandparents into the classroom for a special learning journey together with students. Grandparents' Day is a special time for students to share their unique learning environment and strengthen inter-generational bonds. We look forward to welcoming everyone on Friday.

Have a wonderful week!

Family Science Night

Video: Racing Shadows at Science Night

It's our first ever family science night in celebration of the fun and amazement of science. Come experience science with your child at intriguing and challenging science stations. Discover properties of light and shadow, air and pressure, electricity; learn about the Kindergarten chicken life cycle project, how an egg floats, weather patterns and much more. Adults will find themselves challenged too!

Projects are geared toward K through 5th grades, although all AIS students are welcome. Please join your child and have fun with science! Students will need their parents present in order to participate in Family Science Night. Parents, please sign your child out at the reception prior to heading into science night; children not signed out in advance or who are left at school after 5 p.m. will be charged for after school care.

There will be no after school activities this Thursday due to Family Science Night. Only Yearbook, Fiesta, Tiny Chefs, and Sportball are scheduled as usual; all other ones are being postponed. Stay abreast of extracurricular activity changes easily with our regularly updated calendar.

Please help spread the word to your friends and co-workers. Share our event easily on Facebook.

PTO News

The AIS Facebook Group is the unofficial hub of PTO chatter, and it's bustling! Join up and get in on the conversation.

Bakery Sale on Friday
The PTO will be out again on Friday after school with our usually yummy selection of baguettes, pains au chocolat and croissants for $3.00 each.

Park Cleanup with Keep Austin Beautiful
On April 12, AIS-PTO will be participating in Keep Austin Beautiful's Clean Sweep again. Amelia Despre is organizing this event for us. We'll be picking up trash in Balcones District Park just down the road from the school at the intersection of Amherst and Duval. Clean up will take place from 9 to 11 am with the opportunity to attend the volunteer party hosted by KAB at Fiesta Gardens from11 to 1:30 that day.  We hope to see you there!

PTO OFFICER ELECTIONS ON THE HORIZON!
We have only TWO more PTO meetings before the end of the year.  The next meeting is in two weeks on April 9.  If you are interested in having more of a say in PTO activities, considered volunteering as a member of the PTO Board.  Hanifa Smine will be taking over as President next year, but on May 14 elections will be held for Vice President (President Elect), Treasurer and Secretary.  If you haven't been to many (or any!) meetings this year but you think you may want to get more involved next year, come on April 9 and learn more about these important positions and come and vote for your PTO Officers on May 14.

Box Tops
Please keep bringing your Box Tops to school early and often. Mark your collection sheet, envelope or baggie with your class name and leave them in the YELLOW Box Tops folder among the reception-area PTO mail folders. (And please watch out for those Expiration Dates - approximately 300 Box Tops and Bonus Box Tops certificates received this year were beyond their expiration dates and couldn't be counted.) With just about 6 weeks left to go in the class competition, we are well on the way toward this year's goal of 7,500 Box Tops!
