Off-Site Evacuation Drill: Friday, May 3, 2013
As part of TPCA's safety protocols, K-12 students and staff will be practicing an "Off-Site Evacuation Drill" starting at approximately 1:00 p.m., Friday, May 3, 2013. The main objective of this procedure is to have current TPCA staff members and future TPCA safety teams develop and implement tangible, off-site reunification plans. A secondary objective is to practice/align TPCA safety protocols with the SVVSD Safety Operations as this will assist Longmont First Responders in supporting TPCA. An "Off-Site Evacuation" occurs when the entire building or area is deemed unsafe to inhabit or re-enter. Evacuate is always followed by a location, and is used to move students and staff from one location to a different location in or out of the building. Our Off-Site Evacuation shelter, at this time, will be the Boulder County Fair Grounds (Boston and Hover).
Students and staff will be walking over to the Boulder County Fairgrounds in the afternoon on Friday, May 3, 2013. A team, including administration and teaching staff, has met multiple times over the past months, planning a safe route and seeking district, police, and other community support to aide TPCA in preparing for this "Off-Site Evacuation". This will be our initial effort for an "Off-Site Evacuation Drill" in our current building with over 1,000 students and staff, we expect to make revisions following the practice.
Friday, May 3 is a "Smart Jeans Day" and in preparation for the drill, please remind your child to wear comfortable shoes for walking. Parents who are volunteering on this particular day will be asked to assist in the exercise by following specific directions from the classroom teacher or other designated TPCA personnel. The entire exercise should conclude by approximately 2:40 p.m.
If you have any questions, or would like to know the details about TPCA's Off-Site Evacuation Drill, please feel free to contact Mrs. Parks, Mr. Bean, Mr. Finn, Mrs. Feeney, or Mr. Buchmann. The "Off-Site Evacuation" plan will be shared with the TPCA Safety meeting, Friday, April 26, 3:00 - 4:00 pm.m in the WC Conference Room or WC Media Center. Everyone is welcome to attend that meeting.
Thank you,
BJ Buchmann

|
K-5 Playground Evacuation Drills
After the events in Connecticut this past December, members of our school community have met to discuss safety procedures and the security of our school's facilities One recommendation that came out of this committee was to implement a procedure for getting students quickly and safely into the building should there be an outside threat when students are at recess. Administration met with instructional aides to develop such a plan. This week and next week, students and staff will be practicing the playground evacuation drill during their second recesses, weather permitting. The evacuation plan is as follows:
When students hear the air horn
- They will go quickly, safely, and silently to the nearest playground door for 2nd-5th grades and to the southwest playground door for K-1st grades.
- After entering the building, students will go quickly, safely, and silently to The Commons.
- Finally, students will line up with their classes in The Commons and wait for teacher directions.
Should you have questions or further suggestions, please contact Danielle Feeney at feeney_danielle@svvsd.org

***Wanted***
PTO is looking for a TPCA Parent or Guardian to fill the Treasurer-Elect Position on the PTO Board. The term for this position starts in July.
Treasurer-Elect is a 2-year position. The first year is a training year where you can learn the in's and out's of the organization. You will have a direct impact on how all PTO monies are allocated. Every dime the PTO spends on our teachers, school or students is a dime that was donated from a TPCA family, so you will be expected to make decisions that speak for the K-8 school community.
There are other management responsibilities that come along with the position, but they are manageable and rewarding. We have Executive and General meetings once a month. The General meeting has childcare. Meeting dates and times will be decided once we coordinate all our schedules, so contact us soon!
It is worth mentioning that no one has come forward for this job, so you will not be competing for a position; you will be appointed. Please contact PTO President Angel Platt at plattplace@gmail.com for more details if you are the slightest bit interested.
We would love to spoil our staff and teachers with a little relaxation on Teacher Appreciation Day, May 7, by offering free chair massages. If you are a massage therapist and would be willing to donate a couple hours of your time, please call Kim Kroeger: 303-485-8727.
PTO Meeting
The next PTO meeting is Wednesday, May 8, in the EC Cafetorium, 5:30 p.m. Child care will be provided. We look forward to seeing you there.

| COLORADO LEAGUE OF CHARTER SCHOOLS |
|
ACTION ALERT:
Just a reminder that Colorado's elected officials need to hear from you about the importance of charter schools. Please take a few moments to send a pre-written message to state legislators asking them to include charter schools equally in state funding.
Colorado charter schools are 20 years old now. As we prepare for the next generation of Colorado charter schools, the time has come to put all of our state's K-12 public schools on equal footing to drive positive outcomes for our children, our economy, and the future of our great state.
The re-write of the School Finance Act (Senate Bill 213) is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to do right by ALL Colorado public school students.
Click the link below to tell policymakers to include charter school students equitably in the state's public education funding.
