"Quality Time as a Family"
Where does the time go? How can it be December and the end of 2012?
Personally, it feels like my youngest child just began fifth grade last week and my oldest just left for college. If you are a kindergarten parent, it's hard to believe that the graduating class of 2025 is walking the hallways of Twin Peaks Charter Academy. I'm happy it's only the students who are getting older and not me (yea, right!).
The students and staff are looking forward to a well-deserved break from the daily academics and the "piles of paper" that always follow.
During this time of the year, I want to encourage everyone to slow down and focus on spending some well-deserved time as a family, caring first for each other and then reaching out to others in need. I have listed below some general suggestions for things that parents can do to help support fun, recreational reading and build in quality family time.
Have a Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday Break, from all of us at TPCA.
1. Plan to go to the public library or the local bookstore over the holiday.
2. Take every opportunity you can to help increase your child's vocabulary. Explain the meaning of any words in your reading that the child may not understand or even hear.
3. Encourage reading fluency by having your child read and reread familiar books or stories.
4. Highlight or underline words that you can sound out from the day's "junk mail." At least this will put the "junk mail" to good use.
5. Read a book to or with your children, regardless of the time of day.
6. Take a nap.

| Message from TPCA Board of Directors |
Your Board of Directors thanks you for your support and dedication to our school. The continued success of Twin Peaks depends on active and engaged parents, staff, and students. Please join us at one of our Wednesday, 7 p.m. meetings in the coming year to fully understand the long-term plan for the school and your students.
Open enrollment has started for the 2013-2014 school year. For planning purposes, full enrollment by February 2013 would allow flexibility and proactive coordination of staffing, students, and course offerings. We would like to invite each of you to join our student recruitment process. Invite your friends to our enrollment meetings, share the informational emails with prospective families, and share your success stories. As parents, you are our greatest advocates for new students.
January 8, 2013 will initiate the self-nomination period for the Twin Peaks Board of Directors election. Please consider serving the school, and continuing to chart a course for excellence in education for our children.
Many things have changed in the last few years, however, our dedication to results, student achievement, and student opportunity remains focused and strong. We appreciate your input and ideas and look forward to a successful future for our school. Have a wonderful holiday season and a safe and happy New Year! |

READING is a THRILL!
2,000,000 Minutes Reading Challenge | |
Attention Parents:
Our Reading Challenge is off and running. Please encourage your child to read as much as possible between now and February 22, 2013.
Some basic guidelines are
- Students may count minutes they read by themselves, minutes they read out loud to someone, or minutes someone reads to them.
- The entire class may count minutes read during D.E.A.R. or read aloud time!
- The goal is for all students K-6 to read 30 minutes, 5 days a week, including winter vacation!! However, it will take students reading more than this to reach our goal!!!
- PRIZES----We will be giving away one Kindle per grade level 3-6 and one Leapster Explorer per grade level K-2. To be eligible for the grade-level drawing, students MUST read at least 1800 minutes.

The National Junior Honor Society is partnering with the OUR Center to sponsor a canned food contest to help those in need of food this season! This is the second and final week for you to bring in your items to your classroom teacher. You can bring canned fruits and vegetables, mashed potato and gravy mixes, cereal, pasta, tuna, etc. The OUR Center also needs toothbrushes and toothpaste, soap and shampoo, deodorant, combs, wash cloths, etc. The classroom that collects the most items by this Friday will receive a fabulous prize from NJHS! If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Freeman or Mrs. Whitmer. |
