After the Parent-Teacher Conference
It seems that after the parent teacher conference, we can easily overlook the small things that helped our student reach higher levels of academic success. Consistency is the key for success in many areas of our personal and professional lives. This time tested saying holds true in following up after the parent teacher conference as well not only the student, but the parent, teacher and yes, the administrator as well. It's no coincidence that the harder we work, the luckier we often become with the end result being that child positioned between all of us.
Maintaining a level of structure, consistency and discipline in helping each of our children at home with their school work is vital to their academic success. Young students get many different messages in the many different areas of their lives. Often times the access to technology that surrounds so many of us, talks to our children about what appropriate behavior looks like. Or perhaps they see a movie, hear a song or watch a commercial that emphasizes that students have can whatever they want right away, without thinking through the consequences. As parents, we see this first hand and have lived life enough to know that this is not true. This past year, I read an article where an educational columnist wrote that "Schools may be the last place where children learn that they can't have everything that they want the moment they want it."
As a parent as well as being a school administrator, I personally believe that coming to the parent teacher conference is a vital part to the educational process here at TPCA. Even more important than the conference is following up after the conference with those areas of discussion and goal setting that both you, the teacher and your child talked about. This isn't always easy but it's necessary. This consistency and modeling that your child will learn from you as the parent will help them to understand that they do have to earn and learn; that they can't get everything they want the moment they want it. So again, my compliments to the Twin Peaks parents for playing the greatest and most rewarding role you will ever have in your life, in being a parent that cares enough to let your child work through a struggle, model what goal setting can accomplish and cheers your child on through the process in letting them know that "you can't have everything you want the moment you want it."
