STUDENT SAFETY
Twin Peaks Parents & Community Members;
The recent tragedy and senseless loss of life of a young innocent child in the Jefferson County School District creates a heart breaking wave of immediate concern, vigilance and awareness that grips each of us as parents and our communities. All that we hold close and dear in and of ourselves lies within our children. To try and make sense of insanity in what is an unconscionable series of acts that harms an innocent child and causes family grief beyond repair, strikes at the core of our current culture and leaves so many unanswered questions. This act was committed/initiated within a known community and a neighborhood not so unlike ours and this has been the origin of many fears. With that being said, concern for as well as purposeful conversation with our children must be at the highest level, as an organization, as a staff, and as a parent community so that these greatest fears are never awakened again.
At Twin Peaks, we want you to know that student safety is always our top priority, and we do all we can do to reinforce safe behaviors within our school, as well as modeling for our students constant awareness of their surroundings.
In our country, we are free to travel anywhere in our neighborhoods, to and from school, to visit friends or on family vacation. It is easy to be lulled into safe thinking during any time of travel, whether it be familiar or unfamiliar surroundings. Should we be in a group or temporarily by ourselves in familiar surroundings and a stranger approaches, be sure that your child knows what to do: Yell or shout, run away, and immediately tell an adult. Stress to your child the importance of going straight to school, coming home immediately after dismissal, and leaving the school event with another student. As the age and maturity of the child varies, here are some common strategies that you can implement in your own home. Please have this conversation with your child.
Scholastic's website offers more tips on talking to your child about stranger danger. Remind your child that if he/she sees anything suspicious around the neighborhood or school, they need to immediately contact the police department and notify the school. http://www.scholastic.com/resources/article/talking-about-stranger-safetY
I know that by working together and having these conversations as a family, we can better help protect the safety of all children within our school community.
Thank you,
BJ Buchmann
