BLUE & GOLD BULLETIN - FEBRUARY 26, 2016

From the Principal's Desk
Closing Strong!A poem I've come to enjoy from teaching American literature over the years is Ralph Waldo Emerson's "Terminus," often thought to be Emerson's reflection on his own death. The title, most simply means "end point," but it is also the name of the Roman god of "boundaries." The poem uses a sailing metaphor, for one voyaging through life, and suggests that it would be wise for people "nearing their end" to understand the limits imposed by their physical decline, the boundaries that they operate within, and to be at peace with those boundaries. The poem, though, is not about surrender but about steady sailing toward one's goal and understanding of self. I love the final line's suggestion of the "almost-magical" in reaching one's final destination: "Lowly faithful, banish fear,
Right onward drive unharmed. The port well worth the cruise, is near.
And every wave is charmed."
As we move through Lent toward Easter, these words resonate well with our hope and faith in resurrection, that a loving God has set us on a journey toward Him and that He invites us to move confidently in His direction through all our days, right through closing. Much of the reward is in the journey! Click here to continue reading.

MC Chess Team Has Undefeated Season
At yesterday's North Shore Chess Awards and Master's matches, senior John Graf became the first MC chess player to ever defeat two adult master players! John won two years ago and then again yesterday. Also, Edward Tan '16, Harrison Corr '16, Tommy Burns '17, and Sam Shen '17 played incredibly strong matches versus an adult-masters player.
The Chess Team recently won the North Shore Interscholastic Chess League and in the process, MC became one of only a handful of schools to complete an undefeated season and win the trifecta: its division, the blitz tournament, and the overall title! Special congratulations go to our 9 seniors who earned two championships over the past three years: John Breau, Andrew Canario, Ryan Connor, Harrison Corr, John Graf, Chris Kimmerle, Max Meier, B.K. Moon, and Edward Tan.
