Sophomore Church History Students Visit Trappist Monks at St. Joseph's Abbey

In early June, eight MC sophomores in Mr. Robert Gregory's Church History course traveled to Spencer, MA to visit the community of Trappist monks living at St. Joseph's Abbey.

MC Student from Melrose Wins Community Service Award and is Accepted into Boston Red Sox Service Program in Dominican Republic

Brian Liwo, a Malden Catholic junior from Melrose, was recently recognized for his work in community service by two organizations, the Boston Red Sox and iPods for Wounded Veterans.

Liwo has been chosen as one of ten teens from the United States to travel to the Dominican Republic as part of a community service program sponsored by the Boston Red Sox. Ten high school students from the United States and ten from the Dominican Republic are chosen each year to spend two weeks working on a community service project in the morning and playing baseball together each afternoon.

The goal of the Boston Red Sox Lindos Sueños program is "to bring people of different backgrounds together through the common appeal of baseball and community service".

It might seem that the summer is a time of peace and quiet at Malden Catholic. Students are on break, teachers are mostly gone, and even the main office has reduced hours. But if you visit MC this summer, you will find it full of activity. Once again, we have major projects going on to improve our school and the experience of our students. This summer's work, combined with last year's work on the O'Donnell Learning Commons and Science Wing, dramatically advances the quality of facilities and the learning environment for students of today and tomorrow.

The most noticeable improvement is being done on Donovan Field. We are replacing our 12-year-old turf. We are also respraying the Brother Myles Track and making repairs to the press box. I hope you will join us in the fall as we unveil the new look. Another important athletic improvement is complete renovation of the main locker room and weight room. The redesigned locker room will be equipped with new lockers, seating, and an audio visual system for watching film. The weight room will nearly double in size and new equipment will be added to serve the growing need. These new facilities will dramatically improve the experience of our student athletes.

Some of our projects are visible and some are less so. In the second category is the third phase of sprinkler work, a necessary fire suppression code requirement, and the replacement of the building's original roof. While these projects might not have the wow factor of the athletic improvements, they are extremely necessary to keep up the good condition of our nearly fifty year old building.

Additionally, we are beginning the first of a four-phase project to replace the academic lockers. In talking with the boys, the need for new lockers has come up repeatedly. Next year the seniors will have new lockers, again replacing the original ones, which are aging and less functional than they were.

These improvements are possible because of the generous support of many of you. Gifts to the Essential Campaign and to the Fund for Malden Catholic make projects like these possible. If not for your support our students would not have new labs, a new library, or a new field.

Thank you to all who have given so generously and to those who do so in the future.
