Headmaster's Letter -- Commencement and

Continued Excellence at Malden Catholic

May 2013

Dear Parents,

As I write this, we celebrate yet another culmination of four years of rigorous academics requiring discipline and personal growth by the senior class at Ed Tyrrell photoMalden Catholic. Commencement is a time to reflect upon the accomplishments and achievements of all our students. The steadfast commitment and the exemplary dedication of the faculty and staff on behalf of our young men have resulted in highly commendable college acceptances from various colleges and universities.

Our Malden Catholic 2013 graduates applied to 234 colleges and universities within the region, over 38 states, Washington, D.C., and Canada. Members of the Class of 2013 have received college scholarships with a four-year value of more than $19 million. I am so proud of their academic performance.

Among the scholarships are 26 Presidential Scholarships, 19 Dean's Scholarships, 10 Trustees' Scholarships, and five other full-tuition scholarships. Members of the Class of 2013 have enrolled at the following prestigious colleges and universities:  Berklee College of Music, Boston College, Boston University, Brandeis University, College of the Holy Cross, Georgetown University, Harvard University, Johnson & Wales, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Northeastern University, Norwich University, Providence College, the US Naval Academy and Villanova University, among others.

Students throughout the school continued to make notable achievements this Spring, including:
*      Four students who recently received the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Student Athlete Citizenship Award: Patrick Allen '13, Matthew McHugh '13, Zachary Coles '14 and Ryan Tarby '14
*      More than fifty young men recently inducted to the Brother Gilbert Chapter of the National Honor Society
*      Two top scorers in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in their respective divisions on the National Spanish Exam:  Patrick Allen in level 4, Dominic DeBernardo in level 2. In total at Malden Catholic, there were 30 gold medal winners, 37 silver medal winners, and 21 bronze medal winners.
*      Twenty-five students received recognition for their achievement on the National Latin Examination.

It takes dedicated, knowledgeable faculty who work in partnership with parents to cultivate excellence in the classroom. Several of our faculty recently had noteworthy accomplishments, including: Mary Driscoll, Director of Campus Ministry, who was honored by the Archdiocese of Boston with the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Award for her work with youth; César Baldelomar, theology teacher, selected to present a paper at the Cultural Justice Conference at Emory University; Brian O'Donnell, art teacher, recognized by the New England Institute of Art; Maria Crotty, Foreign Language Chair, selected for the sixth year as an AP Reader, joining more than 1000 Spanish teachers from high schools, universities and colleges from across the country and abroad for Advanced Placement test grading; Cindy Jacobs, Director of Guidance, who is a presenter at the Annual Meeting and Conference of the New England Association of College Admission Counseling.

As we look forward, our commitment to the future of this great school requires that we provide students and families with a school environment that is conducive to 21st century teaching and learning. To this end, we have successfully completed the first phase of our Capital project with a totally new infrastructure that includes heating and cooling, wiring and cabling, and technology upgrades that will provide the very best setting for the teaching and learning of our young men. I am grateful for a small group of alumni and friends who provided the funds to make this project possible.

The school has recently completed a Case Statement which includes architectural renderings of the new science wing and learning commons. Significant time and effort was devoted to the Case Statement to ensure the best possible outcomes and most responsible use of funds for Malden Catholic. The future vision includes the creation of a Learning Commons in our current library space and the creation of a new science wing on the second floor of the school building. In this process, administrators and staff worked closely with the architect hired by the school.

We can all agree that Malden Catholic has a history of excellence, as exemplified by 78 graduating classes of outstanding young leaders. Your support and encouragement are invaluable as we strive to deliver on our vision of excellence for students today and in the future.

Sincerely,

Edward C. Tyrrell
