Where Are All The Godly Men? - Sissyfying The American Man
"Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand." Jeremiah 18: 6
A good friend relayed to me the other day that he thought the culture of today was sissyfying men. I think that is a word, but regardless, his thought was that men have lost their identity. The world around us has radically affected our understanding of who a man is in our culture today. The man of fifty years ago was the hero, he was masculine, the provider, the protector, and a person to be respected. Today's media has made him the villain, the dummy, the less competent person in the home. Commercials and movies reek with the man being rescued by the lady who is now the hero. Is it any wonder that we men today face a crisis of identity.
Ron Handley, founder and President of Character That Counts, has stated that a man's influence is huge. If you can get to the man, you can generally get to the entire family. Quite a difference in the way the world is treating men. If Handley is right, and I believe he can be, then the role of a man as a husband and father becomes the most important role in our society. It can be more important than any position in business or government.
The role of the man as stated in 1st Timothy 5: 8 is to provide for his relatives and family. The man is to lead his family by loving, caring, protecting, providing, and pointing them to Christ. He must be a man who has the right priorities, and has the devotion and commitment to lead by setting the example. In the last several years, however, this principle has been challenged and in some cases, it has become obsolete. The revolutions that began in the sixties have caused a lot of men to question who they are and what their role really is. Masculinity, according to some, is out,
John Eldridge in his book, WILD AT HEART, says that men are born to be conquerers, we want a battle to fight, a beauty to rescue, and an adventure to experience. In simple terms, the man is a hunter, rough, rugged, and dreaming of riding his horse into battle to save the lady of his dreams. Women are waiting for that knight in shinning armor to come rescue them and take them off to be forever loved and cherished. Not exactly what our culture represents today.
Where are these men today? They have become politically expendable. They have been replaced by men whose roles are ones of inadequacy, unimportance, and unfulfilling. Men have become passive. The world has convinced us of a lie and most of us have settled into obscurity. Many men want out, but they don't know how. It will take too much effort, cause too much strife, and they are convinced the whole world is against them, They are lonely men.
Godly men are to be leaders in their families(Ephesians 5:23-25). Men are to be equipped to serve God( 2 Timothy 3:17), men of wisdom(Proverbs 3: 13), and men of courage(1 Corinthians 16:13). We are to be men of God(Psalm 1: 1)
