Where Are All The Godly Men - Finding The Right Path In Life
There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death. Proverbs 16: 25
A few years ago, our family took one of our anual ski trips to Colorado with some friends. We decided in midweek to abandon our skiing for some snowmobiling through the Rockies. With all of our families in tact, off we go on our wild expedition. There is only one problem, the guide restricted us to the well worn trails. Needless to say, we guys were frustrated. All we could see was the wide open spaces that were ours to explore. We asked, begged, the guide to let us loose to explore, but with no result. Finally at the end of the trip, we prevailed on him to let us guys continue on our own for another hour with the "slight" understanding we would stay on the trails.
Well, off we go. The whole Rocky Mountains were at our disposal. After jumping a few ravines, pulling ourselves out of 20 foot snow drifts, a broken windshield, and a few bruises, we headed back to camp. It was late in the day and darkness was approaching. After following the main trail back to camp for awhile, we arrived in an open area that looked very familiar. What we could not determine was which one of the trails leading out of this area was the one back to camp. All the trails were open and well traveled except for one trail. We concluded that the most traveled trail was the one to take. After unsuccessfully pursuing one trail after another, we assembled back in the open space to plan our next move. By this time, it was beginning to get dark and the thought of spending the night in the Rockies was beginning to be a possibility. We began to plan on how we could survive the frozen night.
We realized we had made some foolish choices. Taking this expedition against the instructions of the guide was number one. There were many paths that appeared to be the right path to lead us home, but they only led further away from the base. Life is much like our Colorado experience. There are many paths that look good and appear to lead us to the happiness and significance we so desire, but only lead us to a dead end.
Patrick Morley, leader of Man In The Mirror Ministries, has stated that of the 35 million men who indicate they are born again, only 8 million are involved in any type discipleship. Pornography is said to be active in a majority of men's lives. It has also been reported that 90% of high school students who are members of evangelical churches will drop out by their senior year. These are startling statistic. Some where along the line we have missed the mark in getting into the lives of men with what it means to be a Godly man.
Why should we seek out what it means to be a Godly man? When God created the world, His original purpose was for man to exist in a loving relationship with Him and to fellowship together in the world He created. But man rejected God, choosing instead to live a life independent of Him. As a result of man disobeying God, we live in a fallen world corrupted by sin. A world that Satan, through his lies, has made many paths for us to follow that look so pleasant and desirable. One of the amazing attributes of God is that He knows we are bombarded every day with natural tendencies to strike out on paths that are not of Him. He understands, and yet, He yearns for us to seek Him and His ways.
James 1: 27 states: " we are to keep ourselves from being polluted by this world." 2 Corinthians 6:17 states we are to" come out and be separate from the world." In John, Jesus asked God to not remove us from the world, but to protect us from the evil in the world. He has given us not only His Son as an example of who He is, but as Peter puts it - "His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires." 2 peter 1: 3,4. We have the knowledge of God, the attributes of God, the plan of God, and the power of God. It is a choice. We stated earlier that most people know just enough about God to be disappointed in Him. Many have added Jesus as just another thing added to an already cluttered life. God desires that we not only think like Him, but act like Him. To do so is to really know Him. It is an earth shaping decision. A quest to find the right path.
