Procrastination Leads To avoiding Details
"Poor is he who works with a negligent hand, but the hand of the diligent makes riches." Proverbs 10: 4
Mooney Player was one of the most successful high school football coaches in South Carolina in the fifties and sixties. A well respected man in many circles, he switched careers in the latter years of his life. He started a motivation and leadership training business using the skills he had learned as a successful coach. In my early business career, I went through one of his seminars. It was one of my best experiences as a young businessman. I learned several things from Mooney that I still carry with me today.
Mooney had a way of really pumping people up. I would have loved to have been in one of his locker room speeches before a game. I heard that kids would almost literally knock down a closed door to get to the playing field to "smash some heads" But Mooney was also known as an excellent teacher of the fundamentals of football. No one knew the game like Mooney Player. He taught that willingness to be successful was great, but knowing how to get the job done with organization and efficiency was greater.
Business bondage can come from disorganization, not being efficient in what we do. Disorganization can be characterized by several factors. I like to think of it as when you flush up a covey of quail. Step into a covey and birds get up scattering out in every direction. Once this happens, a hunter could spend hours going after birds in every direction.
There are several characteristics that lead up to not having things organized. A lot of entrepreneurs do not like detail work. As a result, we procrastinate on the details and concentrate on the big picture. Procrastination in taking on the difficult task is probably the biggest danger to good organization. Mooney taught us to list the things we needed to do each day and to make the hard things first on the list. This gets the hard items over and clears the rest of the day for positive and productive things. This is one of my major practices even 30 years after Mooney.
God hates disorder. He is not a God of confusion. In order to prevent business bondage we must keep our business and our personal lives organized. Organization is not a gift all people possess, but it is a gift we can learn. When things are organized, we will have the time and priority to enjoy and accomplish all the things God has in store for us. Our chains will be loosened and freedom to serve God and His people will fill our lives.
