Backyard & Ag Burning Suspended

Due to the long-standing drought conditions and high fire hazard, all backyard and agriculture burning was suspended on July 1, 2014 by County Fire Chief. That order is in effect until further notice.  The APCD and CAL FIRE will continue monitoring the situation and notify the public when conditions change and open burning is permissible.  Once burn season is underway, the APCD will launch a new Backyard Burn online credit card payment process to provide convenient Backyard Burn application and burn fee processing. Contact APCD (805-781-5912) or CAL FIRE (805-543-4244) for further information

30 Years of Service

At the September Board meeting, Larry Allen was recognized for 30 years of service as an employee of the APCD, devoted to the protection of clean air and public health.  During Mr. Allen's tenure, he has held many positions from Air Pollution Control Technician, Senior Air Quality Specialist, Supervising Air Quality Specialist and in 2002 he was appointed to the Air Pollution Control Officer position. Key accomplishments over the past 30 years include principal author of the District's Clean Air Plans, development of the Strategic Action Plan and long-range Fiscal Plan, and leading the complex efforts to determine the source of and reduce particulate matter in the South County.  When he is not at the office, Larry can be found playing with his grandson or singing and strumming his guitar playing local gigs with his band Impromptu. Larry and his wife Leeana enjoy living here on the Central Coast and are the proud parents of two successful young men, Ryan and Brooks.

Congratulations Larry!

Clean Air Ambassadors Program

Now with school back in action, the APCD has just the thing for parents and teachers as kids get back into the classroom -

the Clean Air Ambassador Program! The Clean Air Ambassadors Program is an academic outreach program that builds on a partnership with Cal Poly students to provide environmental education to children grades K-6. The program provides science-based activities and lesson plans to elementary aged students and targets before and after-school programs. Teachers and program coordinators throughout SLO County can request presentations directly through our website, with presentation availability beginning right away!

Civic Spark Program

To help local governments overcome limited capacity to address climate action planning within their communities, the Local Government Commission, in partnership with the Governor's Office of Planning and Research are launching CivicSpark - A Governor's Initiative of AmeriCorps. And the San Luis Obispo County APCD has been selected as one of nine Regional Partners throughout California to implement the CivicSpark Program!

At its September meeting, the APCD Board approved the CivicSpark program for the Central Coast.  A team composed of an experienced project manager and AmeriCorps members is being assembled to help local governments with research, planning and project implementation activities.  We look forward to working with the CivicSpark Team to better serve our communities in the implementation of their Climate Action Plans!
