Ballard Urban Rest Stop

What's behind the gate? It's the Low Income Housing Institute's new Ballard Urban Rest Stop!

We'll be opening the doors on Thursday, October 1st, for the community, friends, and supporters to see our beautiful new hygiene center for homeless residents of Ballard.  Please drop in any time from 4:00pm to 6:00pm at 2014 NW 57th Street, Seattle. There will be a brief program at 4:30pm.

LIHI's third Urban Rest Stop provides homeless residents of Ballard with free showers, laundry, and other hygiene services, plus referrals to housing and services. The facility will be open to patrons starting on Monday, October 12th.   Service hours will be Monday to Friday from 6:30am - 2:30pm.

GGLO is the architect and Walsh Construction is the contractor.

Pie Festival Raises $700 for Nickelsville

The 2nd Annual Nickelsville Pie Festival was held on Sunday, September 13th, at La Marzocco USA Espresso Distributorship in Ballard.

Nine Pie makers entered their pies for the Contest, which had two different judging categories:  Expert and the Holy Poli.  The expert judges were Todd Morrow of Community Transit, Sharon Lee of the Low Income Housing Institute and Bryan Hattemer, husband of Amy, a La Marzocco Project Manager and contest organizer.  He had studied pie judging on the internet extensively that morning.

The winner in the expert category was a Hot Buttered Rum Pie by Julie Hartley.  The runner up was an Heirloom Apple Pie by Lynn Fahselt. Lynn also was the winner of the people's pie popular vote for her Savory Winter Vegetables with Goat Cheese Pie.
Kudos to the judges, pie contributors, volunteers headed up by Peggy Hotes, Pie Baking Contest Founder Angela Galloway, and of course all who came and paid $5 to eat pies and vote on them.

Nickelsville will soon be opening an encampment in Ballard.  To donate, please visit the Nickelsville website.
