LIHI Executive Director Sharon Lee and LIHI Area Manager Leigh Ann Coleman, presented a workshop on Housing First at Gossett Place. Gossett Place provides 63 apartments of permanent supportive housing for chronically homeless veterans, young adults and single and couples with mental illness. The location was originally permitted for a boutique hotel. The workshop described the capital funding, services and operations of Gossett Place. The Housing First Partners Conference, held March 12 - 14, had over 400 attendees and was sponsored by DESC and Pathways to Housing.

Housing Advocates Meet with Kshama Sawant
Preserving affordable housing in Seattle's gentrifying neighborhoods was a hot topic discussed by housing advocates with Seattle City Councilmember Kshama Sawant. L to R: Ishbel Dickens, John Fox, Sharon Lee, Kshama Sawant

The recent news around the loss of affordable housing at the Lockhaven Apartments in Ballard brought to light the need for Right of First Notice legislation. This would require an apartment owner to give first notice to residents and/or a resident organization of their intent to sell their building--thereby providing an opportunity for residents (or a nonprofit working on their behalf) to assemble financing to buy the building. Additional funds are needed to preserve at-risk housing. Advocates asked CM Sawant to support reinstating the City Council's Growth Fund, where a percentage of tax revenue from new construction is dedicated to low-income housing.
