It's Finally Summer!

We hope you're enjoying the beautiful weather & your area's summer festivities. We have a newsletter packed with summer volunteer opportunities for you and a terrific story to share about the tremendous ways one committed volunteer can impact a life of a LIHI resident. Read on & pass on to others who want to make a real difference in their community.

Meet Luna & Almaz

We are excited to celebrate another Computer Technology and Job Search Training Program graduation!

Entering the program, LIHI resident Almaz's goals aimed at improving computer skills while building her resume and searching for new employment opportunities. LIHI volunteer Luna met with Almaz once a week for three months, with each session helping her student gain more confidence in her technology skills. An owner of a housekeeping business, Almaz was additionally looking to learn how to reach new clients and expand her business. Luna taught her how to post her business page to Craiglist and update it on a regular basis. The pair also improved and finalized Almaz' resume so she can apply for jobs independently while continuing to build her business. Just as exciting part of their collaboration was the relationship they built and the pride they both feel from their mutual accomplishment. Luna shared with LIHI that volunteering with Almaz was very fulfilling and helped her balance her life. It showed that one "can make a difference even when things aren't perfect." "I was out of a job for a year and still able to be of service" to another person in need. By the close of Almaz and Luna's collaboration, Almaz was able to comfortably access her email, search the internet and find new ways of using the computer on her own.

Congratulations to Luna on helping your first student gain so many invaluable technology skills, and on your new job!

Volunteer with Kids Transitioning Out of Homelessness and Help Prevent Summer Hunger!

  Volunteer-led activity at the camp.

For kids transitioning out of homelessness, hunger is a reality, especially during the summer, when school lunches aren't an option. All children living at LIHI's Meadowbrook View Apartments receive free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch during the school year. But when school is out kids go without these crucial meals. This is the key reason why LIHI organizes an on-site day summer camp where in addition to accessing two meals each day kids have an opportunity to learn and play. Help create memorable summer experiences for our young residents - click here to learn more and email us at volunteer@LIHI.org to sign up today!

United Way Day of Caring 2013

Mark your calendar to join the largest volunteer event in the state! Snohomish, Thurston, Pierce & King Counties are celebrating the Day of Caring this year on September 20th & 27th.  Last year LIHI hosted 58 volunteers from Microsoft, Washington Federal, Seattle University, Vulcan, AT&T and the Swedish Medical Group who tackled yard work and painting projects at apartment sites across Seattle. This year we are expanding our Day of Caring participation to sites in three additional counties!

How do I form a Day of Caring team?

Talk to your HR manager or employer to see if your company sponsors Day of Caring teams. If not, recruit among your friends, family, church members, or sports teammates. Some teams are as large as 50, some are as mighty as 5. We can match you with a project that will suit the size of your team. Email volunteer@LIHI.org to learn more today!

Volunteers needed to stuff backpacks

for homeless kids!

Every fall through Project Cool, Seattle King County Coalition on Homelessness (SKCCH) members and volunteers make sure that hundreds of homeless children and youth start the school year off right. Project Cool helps homeless students who may have lost most or all of their personal possessions get the school supplies they need to feel confident and be prepared. Included with every backpack a student receives a Know-Your-Rights flyer on the educational rights for homeless students outlined in the McKinney Vento Act. For over 24 years, Project Cool has helped more than 23,000 homelessness students be ready for the first day of school.

Project Cool for Back-to-School needs volunteers this month to help prepare 1,300 backpacks for homeless children in preschool through twelfth grade. Click here to find out how you can be involved or contact Kathryn Murdock, Project Cool Coordinator at kathrynm@homelessinfo.org.

June Orientation a Success ! Save the Date Announcement.

LIHI volunteer orientation

On June 19th, LIHI hosted our first LIHI Volunteer Orientation at Ernestine Anderson Place with 14 of our fantastic volunteers! It was a great event that allowed volunteers to learn more about LIHI & low-income housing as well as connect with other volunteers and share their experiences. We had a great discussion around many of the reasons for homelessness & poverty, what LIHI does & why. Thank your for joining us! The evening couldn't have happened without your engagement so thank you for contributing!

Save the date! Our next Volunteer Orientation will be held August 10th from 10:00 - 11:30am at Ernestine Anderson Place (2010 S. Jackson St. in the Central District). If you couldn't make our June 19th event, join us in August for nutritious snacks, information about LIHI, volunteer opportunities & meet your fellow volunteers!
