Happy Holidays from LIHI!

Dear Friend,

What is new this holiday season?

LIHI opened up a new Urban Rest Stop in the University District, which quickly filled to capacity. Homeless young adults, seniors, families, veterans--even UW students having a hard time making ends meet--are grateful to get a hot shower, do their laundry and use the restrooms. Please see the article below for more info about URS @ U District.

The Urban Rest Stop downtown continues to serve over 450 homeless persons daily.

Ernestine Anderson Place, opening in late January, will provide 75 seniors with a green, energy efficient and affordable home in Seattle's Central Area. We are now leasing up. Certain apartments are dedicated to homeless and disabled seniors as well as veterans. With the recession, many baby boomers are at-risk of or have fallen into homelessness. In 2013 LIHI will start construction on 50 units of senior housing in Ballard and 57 units of low income workforce housing in downtown Bellevue.

LIHI serves over 8,855 families and individuals each year with low-income housing, counseling, and hygiene services at the Urban Rest Stops.

Please consider a gift to LIHI this year. You may donate online at www.LIHI.org. Peace and the very best to you in 2013,

Sharon H. Lee
Executive Director
Low Income Housing Institute

Urban Rest Stop @ U District

When the Urban Rest Stop @ U District quietly opened its doors this summer, word of mouth spread quickly and it was operating at capacity within a week. The URS @ U District provides showers, bathrooms, laundry, and information/referral services to homeless people in Seattle's University District. LIHI thanks the University Temple United Methodist Church and ROOTS for use of their space located at 1415 NE 43rd Avenue. The Rest Stop is open and staffed Tuesday through Friday, from 9 am until 6 pm.

  • Day 1:  5 people were served.
  • Day 4:  60 people were served.

Within three months, the URS provided:

  • 690 laundry loads
  • 2,761 showers

What happens at an Urban Rest Stop?
