Chorus News
Brixx Spirit Night Wednesday, September 21
Submitted by Heidi Hickox

Our singers are off to a great start of the 2016 school year. Not only are students diving right into regular class rehearsals, one group has already had their first performance.  Members of our Women's Chamber Choir sang for the Town of Cornelius 9/11 Never Forget ceremony and installation of the Cornelius 9/11 Monument at Fire Station #1 to honor first responders and citizens who were affected by the events on September 11, 2001. The monument includes a piece of steel from the World Trade Center acquired by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in 2015.  These ladies were honored to be part of such a special tribute, along with cadets from HHS JROTC and the 5th Grade Chorus from JV Washam Elementary.

Upcoming Band Performances and United Sound
Submitted by Laura Ziegler

The Husky Marching Band is excited to partner with the Bailey Middle School Band at our home Varsity football game on tonight for the playing of the National Anthem. Other upcoming special performances include a Davidson College home football game on September 17th , the Huskies away Varsity football game at Hopewell on Sept. 23rd and the first band competition of the season at Cuthbertson High School on September 24th.

The Band will be introducing a new program this year in cooperation with United Sound, Inc. which is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide musical performance experiences for students with special needs. Band students have the unique opportunity to mentor these students, but we need your help with supplying gently used instruments in good working order. If you have an instrument to donate, please contact Mr. Carrington at Robert.carrington@cms.k12.nc.us. More information about United Sound, Inc. is available at http://www.unitedsound.org/

The Band's Fruit and Butter Braid sales began Sept. 12.

Did you know that....

-All CMS Students are eligible for free breakfast?  A healthy breakfast gets your day off to  good start to a productive day

-You can set up an lunch payment account for your student?  Does your student forget to bring money for lunch or sometimes forget his or her lunch at home?  We have the answer to that - PAY PAMS!  Pay Pams is an automated system that holds an account for your student.  Add money from home and they have access to the funds when they need them.  You can also see what your student is eating.  Just go to www.paypams.com - you do not need your student's ID to sign up.

- Need help paying for school lunch?  Families may apply for free or reduced price lunch throughout the year.  From CMS Website:  "Students who were approved for benefits last year will continue receiving lunch under last year's approval until a new application is processed. Students have up to 30 days to reapply for meal benefits. Students who do not reapply for the current school year will need money for meals beginning the 31st school day."  (Editor's note:  The 30th day of school is October 11th)
This program runs August 1 though the end of May each year, so please remember to re-link yearly.  If you have not done so yet, please go ahead and do it one of three ways:

You can also link several schools or clubs at one time.  For example, if the JORTC is linked or the middle school or elementary school, you can link the PTSA as well.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools provides high schools with enough chromebooks for all students to use during the day (they cannot take them home).  Students will still have the option to use their own device at school.  The abovementioned offer for the Chromebook discount with our CMS preferred vendor is an option for you if you wish to purchase one for home use;  this is not a requirement.

Shop On Amazon and Earn Money for HOUGH

Submitted by PTSA Fundraising VP, Debbie Wood

The PTSA now has an account through Amazon Smile.  Please put your online purchases to work and help the school earn money at the same time.

What is AmazonSmile?
AmazonSmile is a website operated by Amazon that lets customers enjoy the same wide selection of products, low prices, and convenient shopping features as on Amazon.com. The difference is that when customers shop on AmazonSmile (smile.amazon.com), the AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the price of eligible purchases to the charitable organizations selected by customers.

How does AmazonSmile work?
When first visiting AmazonSmile, customers are prompted to select a charitable organization from almost one million eligible organizations. In order to browse or shop at AmazonSmile, customers must first select a charitable organization. For eligible purchases at AmazonSmile, the AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the purchase price to the customer's selected charitable organization.

Publix Partners
Hough continues its partnership with Publix grocery stores again this year. If you still have your card from last year please continue to use it.  Cards for new families will be distributed soon. All you have to do is show the cashier your card at the BEGINNING of your transaction when checking out and the cashier will scan it for you. For every $37,500 Hough supporters spend at Publix we can earn up to $250 per quarter. If we don't meet the $37,500 in a quarter the tally will run into the next quarter. This is an easy school rewards program that involves no cost on your part. Just be sure to present your card at the BEGINNING of the check out!

CMS Comprehensive Student Assignment
Phase 1 Community Engagement Discussion
Submitted PTSA Advocacy Co-Chairperson Lisa McMillan and Howler Editor Linda Petry

At its May 24th meeting, the CMS board unveiled more details around the student assignment timeline. The new schedule delays implementation of any potential feeder pattern changes until Fall 2018. See the Charlotte Observer article, which includes a link to the board presentation, for more information.  The CMS Board of Education is holding meetings to discuss the results of the community engagement sessions for Phase 1, with a vote in November.  It is very important to stay abreast of these changes as CMS puts very detailed information on its website for Phase 1 (implementation school year 2017-2018) and Phase 2 (no engagement sessions scheduled yet with implementation school year 2018-2019.)
Phase 1 of the comprehensive student assignment review process entails an examination of the magnet programs that CMS offers (current programs as well as an expansion of programs to provide more choices and accessibility.)  Phase 2 (which has not begun yet) will entail an examination of school boundaries and high school feeder patterns.
Hough Howler Submissions
Next Deadline:  Saturday, October 1 Noon
Please read the below information in its entirety if you submit articles to the Howler.
Thank you!!!
Deadlines and Requirements for Articles This Year

The Hough Howler is the electronic newsletter compiled by the Hough PTSA that communicates the most current Hough High School News and and information.  We encourage all Hough staff members, booster clubs and Hough student clubs to provide us information to publicize to the over 2600 Howler e-mail subscribers in the Hough community.  Articles must be specific to Hough, Hough PTSA, Husky Athletic Club, other Hough booster clubs/student clubs or organizations or CMS specific/principal approved.

Deadlines:  During the school year, there are two deadlines a month for articles - the 1st and 15th of each month at NOON.  During the summer months, the Howler has less frequent deadlines.  Please pay attention to these deadlines as sometimes that date is on a weekend or during a holiday.  If there is something urgent that needs to go out, the Howler will be distributed on a more frequent basis at the Editor's discretion. The Howler may be distributed within a few days past the deadline, so please submit your articles on time, or even better, early!  It is best to publicize events with dates that take place at least a week past the deadline.  Sometimes, that means advanced planning and article submission at least one Howler prior. Thank you for your cooperation.

Requirements for submssions:  Articles should be typed in Arial 11 font; if you want a picture included, please indicate placement within text and submit a separate jpg file.  If you want to link to a document or flyer, please send fllyer or document as a pdf file.  If you want it as an image in the article, please send as a jpg file.  If including a picture, please indicate names of those in picture (left to right.) (unless it is a huge group) and identify who is providing the picture.  If no identification is provided, we will identify the name of person providing the submission.  If submission is sent by a student or parent for a Hough club/organization, the Hough staff advisor must be copied.  Editor reserves the right to edit or decline articles not meeting the abovementioned criteria.  If you have questions about any of these requirements for submission, please contact the Editor prior to the deadline.  Thank you for your cooperation.
