Holiday Doors of Hough

The Hough PTSA President and Howler Editor roamed the halls of Hough on Monday and loved all

the doors decorated by staff and students so much that we wanted to share them with you.  We apologize to those staff for not including doors decorated after that day or those we missed.  Thanks to staff member Bev Brown and student Carson Boykin (aka Clark Kent) for being our models.

Congratulations to Ms. McCaffrey for winning the Student Leadership's Most Spirited Holiday Staff Member for the week and to Ms. Tilley for winning the Art Club's (under the direction of Ms. O'Shea) Holiday Door Contest.  Have a great winter break, huskies, and we will see you in 2016!!!

PTSA Staff Appreciation Cookie Walk

Submitted by PTSA Staff Appreciation Chair Talina Bath

Many volunteers chipped in Monday, December 14th to make our annual Staff Cookie Walk a huge success!   Over 100 people volunteered - by making cookies, folding cookie boxes,  laying out cookies or cleaning up!  Thank you all so much for helping the staff at Hough High feel appreciated during this holiday season.   We received many last minute cookie donations as well which allowed us to also share cookies with others - the Cornelius Police Department and Fire Department as well as Statesville Road Elementary Staff (located off exit 16).  They were all extremely appreciative as was the staff at Hough.   I know the staff at Hough High and Statesville Road Elementary as well as the Cornelius police and fire departments join me in extending their thanks and appreciation to all our wonderful volunteers.   Look for our next Staff Appreciation event in February - a "Soup"er (or chili) Event.

Hough STEM Club

Submitted by Jakob Heiser

We wanted to introduce you to a club new to Hough this year.  We are Iditarod Motorsports, a part of the National STEM league.  We operate like a professional racing team.  We must overcome some of the same challenges and compete in some very similar things that a real race team would have to do.  We work on projects in categories like robotics, aerodynamics, and marketing. We recently competed at our Fll regionals competition.  We placed first in driving, first in the drag race, and first place overall.  Placing first overall has qualified us for the National competition in Miami this Spring.  We are very excited to be able to travel to Miami and represent our school at the national level.  We hope you will support us throughout the year.

AVAILABLE NOW AT...

Submitted by PTSA Bookfair Chairperson, Deana King

Hough PTSA is partnering with Main Street Books of Davidson to supply supplemental reading materials assigned by teachers for students to purchase. By buying the books requested by the teachers at Main Street Books, you will be supporting a local small business in our community while raising funds for our school. Main Street Books will donate 10%-20% of the sale price for all ordered titles purchased at the store, at any point during the school year that it is assigned. The only books that will be available in multiple copies are ones that teachers have requested for the store to carry, so when a book is assigned, check with your teacher to see if they have placed the order.
Currently in stock at Main Street Books are the following:

9th grade: Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta
Stevens: The Kite Runner by Kahled Hosseini

Publix Partners
We are excited to announce Hough has started a partnership with Publix grocery stores. Publix Partner cards were distributed to students earlier this month. All you have to do is show the cashier your card at the BEGINNING of your transaction when checking out and the cashier will scan it for you. For every $37,500 Hough supporters spend at Publix we can earn up to $250 per quarter. If we don't meet the $37,500 in a quarter the tally will run into the next quarter. This is an easy school rewards program that involves no cost on your part. Just be sure to present your card at the BEGINNING of the check out!

Thank you to everyone who has already linked their Harris Teeter VIC card.  If you have not linked your card it needs to be relinked each August.  Linking your VIC card is an easy way earn money for the school without any cost to you.  You can also link several schools or clubs at one time.  For example, if the JORTC is linked or the middle school or elementary school, you can link the PTSA as well.  The PTSA Together in Education # is 8376.  You can do this several ways:
  • Email me (debbiewood1@roadrunner.com) your name, VIC account # and/phone number and I can link it for you.
  • Tell the cashier at checkout you are with William A Hough High School PTSA and he cashier can link for you.
