Hour of Code
December 7-13
Submitted by Rachel Laminack

Hough will be hosting Hour of Code throughout the week of December 7th - 13th, in honor of Computer Science Education Week. This year's theme for the worldwide Hour of Code event is Star Wars.

Hough of Code is an opportunity for students to try computer programming for one hour throughout
the span of a week. This is a great way to see if the students have an interest
in computer science and technology. Hour of code offers programs for students who
have no experience at all, as well as programs for students that have coded
before.

We are asking for anyone with experience or knowledge of computer languages to become a guest speaker to inform students on their experiences with computer programming.

For more information about Hour of Code, visit code.org

For information about guest speaking, or any additional questions visit room C224 or email karenj.kyei-fordjour@cms.k12.nc.us.

On December 1st, FBLA will be hosting our induction ceremony for new and old members. We will have a guest speaker, Joseph Obeid, who was FBLA's President last year. The induction ceremony will begin at 5:30 and will be hosted at Hough's library.

During high school, he was both an athlete and a scholar, maintaining a high GPA, as well as participating in Varsity Cross-Country and Varsity Track during all four years of his high school career.  His athletic accomplishments include Captain of the Track Team and MVP in Cross Country. He was very involved in FBLA as a chair of professional development, vice president, and eventually president. He also was an outstanding member in various honor societies including Mu Alpha Theta and the National Honor Society. Bailey's Glen-Hough High School Partnership Success!
Submitted by Jessica Savage

The Bailey's Glen-Hough High School Partnership has been a beneficiary of the generosity of Bailey's Glen residents and Hough parents. Their support in the past year has allowed the Partnership to attain its goal of providing financial support to students in need as well as funding mini-grants to teachers for activities and materials to enhance instruction. Both the school and Bailey's Glen residents reap benefits from Partnership activities. In the past year:

Partnership funds
*             Provided $4,500 to 48 students
*             Awarded two $500 college scholarships
*             Funded $6650 in mini-grants to Hough faculty for professional development and classroom resources

Residents benefitted from
*             Student entertainment for events,
*             Student/teacher led photography classes,
*             Access to sporting events,
*             Invitations to theatrical and musical performances.

The support of the Partnership clearly demonstrates that "together we can make a difference." If you wish to make a contribution, please contact Jessica Savage at Jessica.savage@cms.k12.nc.us. The Partnership is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, so your contribution is fully tax-deductible.

Hough Howler Submissions

Next Deadline:  December 1 Noon

 Deadlines for Articles This Year

The Hough Howler is the electronic newsletter compiled by the Hough PTSA that communicates the most current Hough High School News and and information.  We encourage all Hough staff members, booster clubs and Hough student clubs to provide us information to publicize to the over 2600 Howler e-mail subscribers in the Hough community.  Articles must be specific to Hough, Hough PTSA, Husky Athletic Club, other Hough booster clubs/student clubs or organizations or CMS specific/principal approved.

Deadlines:  During the school year, there are two deadlines a month for articles - the 1st and 15th of each month at NOON.  During the summer months, the Howler has less frequent deadlines.  Please pay attention to these deadlines as sometimes that date is on a weekend or during a holiday.  If there is something urgent that needs to go out, the Howler will be distributed on a more frequent basis at the Editor's discretion. The Howler may be distributed within a few days past the deadline, so please submit your articles on time, or even better, early! Thank you for your cooperation.

Requirements for submssions:  Articles should be typed in Arial 11 font; if you want a picture included, please indicate placement within text and submit a separate jpg file.  If you want to link to a document or flyer, please send fllyer or document as a pdf file.  If you want it as an image in the article, please send as a jpg file.  If including a picture, please indicate names of those in picture (left to right.) (unless it is a huge group) and identify who is providing the picture.  If no identification is provided, we will identify the name of person providing the submission.  Editor reserves the right to edit or decline articles not meeting the abovementioned criteria.
