Let's Raise Some Funds for Hough Technology
We need all Hough staff, students, parents and friends to log onto
CELEBRATEMYDRIVE.COM everyday starting Friday!
Friday, October 18 - Saturday, October 26
Submitted by Student Leadership, Elissa Hayes
We have a great opportunity to win high school grant money. It's easy - all we have to do is have every student, every faculty member, every parent log on each day from October 18-26 and pledge safe driving. If we have the most commitments we win and 100 schools can win so it is a real possibility.
Celebrate My Drive is State Farm's signature program, designed to be a community celebration of safe driving habits. To help raise awareness around teen driver safety, State Farm is giving away $3.25 million in grants to high schools!
From October 18-26, anyone 14 years or older, can make one safe driving commitment per day for his/her school of choice by going to CELEBRATEMYDRIVE.COM. Our school is listed as William Amos Hough High School
(*Please note, no solicitation of products will be made as a result of this or any Celebrate My Drive communication.)
CELEBRATE MY DRIVEŽ Powered by State FarmŽ encourages teens to make positive choices as they start driving. We're proud to help them stay safe as they explore the road ahead.
WHY: Crashes are the No. 1 killer of teens. The first year of driving is the most dangerous.
WHEN: National Teen Driver Safety Week | October 18-26 | AND BEYOND!
HIGH SCHOOLS AND STUDENTS AGES 14+ will unite their communities to generate support for their school by making safe driving commitments. $3.25 million in grants* will then be awarded to 100 winning high schools! 2 schools get a Grand Prize Concert by Kelly Clarkson and a $100,000 grant
8 schools get $100,000 and 90 schools get $25,000
Let's help raise money for Technology for Hough High School so we can support BYOT and buy some iPad carts! Starting on October 18th, we will send you an email each day to remind you to log on each day! Don't worry - we'll only send out these daily reminders for one week. So, please help us out and log in daily!

2013 Miss Hough Carrousel Scholar Program
Submitted by Gina Story
In 1967, Carolinas' Carrousel, Inc. instituted its Carrousel Queens Scholarship Program to recognize outstanding students in the Charlotte region. Each area high school was invited to select a senior girl to represent its school and compete for the college scholarships offered by the Novant Health Carolinas' Carrousel.
That program continues today as the Carrousel Scholarship Program. The 2013 Carrousel Representatives will be selected from 60 area high schools. Scholarships are awarded to the top Carrousel Scholar and four runners-up. The program also awards the Bill and Mary Ann York Community Service Award. Under the auspices of the Carrousel Scholarship Fund, awards include five cash scholarships: $3,000, $2,000, $1,600, $800 and $700.
The 2013 Miss Hough Carrousel was chosen on Tuesday, October 15th after a rigorous selection process which included an in depth application, essay and personal interview with a panel of judges. Our competition recognizes one female senior that exemplifies academic excellence, community involvement, strong moral character, leadership and confidence in personal presentation. The following seniors participated in this year's event:
Miss McKenzie Maddox, Miss Katelyn Benson, Miss Elissa Hayes, Miss Courtney Carroll, Miss Alexandra Doten, & Miss Jennifer Lyne Hart
This was a very difficult process because all of these contestants exemplified qualities Hough was looking for in their representative. However, three young women stood out and were chosen as our court. They are:
2nd Runner Up: Miss Alexandra Doten
1st Runner Up: Miss Courtney Carroll
2013 Miss Hough Carrousel winner is: Miss Elissa Hayes
In November, Miss Hayes will move on to compete against 59 other high school seniors for the
coveted title of Carrousel Queen where she has the opportunity to receive a $3000 scholarship to her college of choice.
GOOD LUCK ELISSA!!!! |

Invest in Technology at Hough High!
Invest in Your Child's Future
Submittted by PTSA VP Fundraising, Talina Bath

As you may know, the PTSA's main fundraiser is the Huskies Fund. Our goal this year is $12,000 which is the amount needed to continue to provide PTSA programs such as Advocacy, the Graduation Project, Reflections, and other student activities as well as to support Hough High academics.
In addition, Dr. Rosenbach and the PTSA would like to improve the technology at Hough by purchasing Ipad or Google Chrome Book carts to incorporate technology with the curriculum. We feel this is imperative to the success of Hough students and will allow them to be competitive when they move on from Hough High. These technology carts will allow us to become a full BYOT (or Bring Your Own Technology) school. Students would bring their own devices or utilize these technology carts.
However, we can only do it with your help.
All donations above our Huskies Fund goal of $12,000 will be set aside for the purchase of these carts. We hope to raise $30,000 for technology. Your donation is 100% tax deductible and any amount is appreciated. If you have already donated, thank you for your generosity! If you have not donated as of yet or would like to contribute towards the push for technology at Hough, you may send in your donation in an envelope marked PTSA Huskies Fund.

Donations for AP Testing
Submitted by Jenny Hudak, Hough StateTesting Coordinator
Parents of AP Students,
THANK YOU!! to the families who have donated so far. We have received $150 in donations to date with $1500 remaining.
This year we have secured a facility for AP testing that will allow us to test all students at one location. In past years, we've had to hold same day testing at multiple facilities; some of which did not provide an optimal testing environment. The facility we want to use this year is a positive and peaceful environment for your student. The location we would like to secure is allowing us to use the facility free of charge but we need to rent tables for the 2 weeks of AP testing. The cost of the table rental is $1656. Would you be willing to help defray that cost? This year, CMS is paying the full amount for each AP exam. That means you won't have to pay for any tests. Please consider donating to Hough to help defray the cost of securing an optimal testing location. Or, pass this information along to community members and businesses that may be willing to help out our testing program. Your contribution is tax deductible. If you are able to help, please make your check payable to William A. Hough High School and send it to the attention of Jenny Hudak - AP testing Coordinator. Thank you so much for your thoughtfulness.

Submitted by Laurie Castillo
Brandon Castillo, senior violist, has been selected as a member of the 2013 All-National Honor Symphony Orchestra sponsored by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). Brandon will join more than 670 of the most musically talented and skilled high school students in the United States to perform at a gala concert on October 30, 2013 in Nashville, TN.
The NAfME All-National Honors Ensembles, consisting of a concert band, symphony orchestra, mixed chorus, and jazz ensemble, are organized by members of the NAfME. The concert band and symphony orchestra will each have approximately 150 instrumentalists, the jazz ensemble will have 20 instrumentalists, and the mixed chorus will have approximately 350 vocalists. Eligible students have qualified for their state-level honor ensemble program and competed against top students for a spot in these national honor ensembles.
It's a two year process in North Carolina for orchestra students to be eligible to audition for the All-National Honors Ensembles. Brandon became eligible when he was selected for North Carolina's All-State National Honors Orchestra his junior year which was the result of the Western Regional Honors Orchestra his sophomore year. Once eligible, Brandon made an audition tape and Mr. Myers wrote a recommendation letter. Both were sent to NAfME along with all other eligible students from all 50 states. Brandon was notified that he was selected over the past summer.

Brandon has been playing the viola for over 7 years. He has been a member and principal chair of the Hough Orchestra since his freshman year. Brandon is also a member of the Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestra since his freshman year and currently 2nd chair. Brandon is the only student from the Charlotte area selected for the All-National Honors Ensembles and the only musician in North Carolina to be selected for the All-National Honor Symphony Orchestra! The 2013 NAfME All-National Honors Ensembles will perform for an audience of thousands on Wednesday, October 30, 2013, in the Presidential Ballroom of the Gaylord Opryland Hotel, Nashville, TN.
Good Luck Brandon and CONGRATULATIONS! |
