FROM OUR COUNSELORS
News from the Counseling Department
Week of February 22, 2016

Topic of the Week: Visiting College Campuses
Spring Break is a fantastic time to visit colleges! As you begin to think about your spring break plans, consider including a visit to a college campus or two. It is never too early to begin visiting colleges, and it is an important part of the college decision making process. Websites and college mailings always have beautiful pictures in them, but they don't tell the whole story. It is important for students to have the chance to visit the campus(es) of the college(s) they are interested in attending before they make their final decision - and that includes the U of A. The U of A is about more than just the football stadium or basketball arena; the two parts of campus that most of our students have visited. It is important to visit campus during the week, during the day, so that students can get a real sense of what the campus is like. All colleges offer free campus tour programs; some are just an hour or two, and others are an all day event. You can register for these opportunities on the college website (usually under the "admissions" or "prospective students" links) and it is important to register ahead of time; don't just show up and expect to be shown around. Happy touring!

Some things to consider on a college visit:
  • Take pictures and make notes of impressions because campuses start to blur together after visits to several campuses
  • Talk with students - ask them why they chose that school, what they like best, etc.
  • Talk with the admissions staff - entrance requirements, scholarships, application timeline and components, graduation rates, etc.
  • Talk with someone from the major that you are considering - job placement rates, opportunities to work with faculty, internships, etc.
  • Eat lunch on campus - helps you get a feel for campus food, but also gives you an opportunity to get a better feel of campus life
  • Other questions - housing options, extracurricular opportunities, 4-year graduation rate, how easy is it to get the classes you want, class sizes, study abroad opportunities

We will be offering two College Planning Nights next month:
  • College Planning Night for IB Juniors will be held on Tuesday, March 1 at 6:30 pm in the CDO Café.
  • College Planning Night for Juniors will be held on Wednesday, March 9 at 6:00 pm in the CDO Café.

Seniors who have been admitted to the University of Arizona...
Don't forget to check your "Next Steps" center for important information!! Also, once you have been admitted, you have access to the Scholarship Universe where you can find a multitude of scholarship opportunities! Visit https://scholarshipuniverse.arizona.edu/splash/splash.aspx

SAT and ACT Registration
It is time for college bound juniors to start looking into registering for these exams. College bound juniors should take an SAT and/or ACT during the spring of their junior year. This allows plenty of time to retest early in the senior year if desired and still meet college application deadlines. Registration for the SAT occurs at http://sat.collegeboard.org and registration for the ACT occurs at www.actstudent.org. Please contact your students' counselor if you have any questions about either of these exams.

CollegeBoard + Khan Academy = Official SAT Practice
CollegeBoard has partnered with Khan Academy to offer FREE SAT preparation. And, now you can link your PSAT test results to your Khan Academy account so that you can fast-forward past the diagnostic quizzes, earning skill levels and receiving personalized practice recommendations based on your test results. Learn more at http://sat.collegeboard.com.

It's time to start thinking about what your student is going to do this summer!
There are many options available to high school students throughout the summer to improve their academic skills, investigate various career fields, experience college life, give back to their communities, and many other opportunities. We will be compiling a list of various summer opportunities and posting them on our website (thank you Mrs. Mapp!) at: https://www.amphi.com/schools/cdo-high/counseling/enrichment-opportunities.aspx. Please check the list often as more opportunities will be added on a regular basis as they become available. Many programs require an application and application deadlines begin as early as February for summer 2016.

MESSAGE FROM CDO SRO
Hello Dorados. Hopefully the first semester went well for everyone and you are looking forward to finishing the 2015-2016 school year on a positive note. The School Resource Unit at CDO has noticed an increase in parking lot collisions occurring on campus. We wanted to remind everyone of the Arizona state requirements regarding private property collisions. Arizona Revised Statues 28-662 states that a driver must stop and remain at the scene (or as close as possible). Arizona Revised Statues 28-663 states the driver(s) of the vehicle(s) involved shall:

1. Give the driver's name and address and the registration number of the vehicle the driver is driving.
2. On request, exhibit the person's driver license to the person struck or the driver or occupants of or person attending a vehicle collided with.
3. Render reasonable assistance to a person injured in the accident, including making arrangements for the carrying of the person to a physician, surgeon or hospital for medical or surgical treatment if it is apparent that treatment is necessary or if the carrying is requested by the injured person.
A person who fails to comply with subsection A, paragraph 1 or 2 of this section is guilty of a class 3 misdemeanor.

If you are involved in a private property collision you may contact law enforcement (SRO's) to facilitate the exchange of information. Law enforcement does not find fault when on private property and citations are not issued unless criminal activity is observed. If you are involved in a collision you must obey the above listed rules and remember they are called "accidents" for a reason.

REACH PARENTS

CDO REACH Parents:

Please check your email (Tuesday, February 9) for the REACH Parent Survey.
We are hoping that all the parents of REACH students will complete the survey.  Most REACH students at CDO completed the student survey this past week.  The students who did not complete the survey will be provided an opportunity to do so in the next few weeks.   Thanks so much for your help

Honors Internship 101 and 102
Students who have enrolled in the Honors Internship 101 and 102 classes for next school year should plan to attend the prep seminars during early out mornings in March, April and May.  Plan to attend one session each month to prepare for finding internships and learning the procedures for documenting your summer work.  Permission slips are available in the counseling office and on-line at the CDO Reach Parent Wiki http://cdogifted.wikispaces.com/Announcements+%26+Events (scroll to the bottom of the page to find the passes).

DRESS CODE REMINDER
DRESS CODE
The weather is changing ...but the school Dress Code is not. Please make sure that your midriff and undergarments are not exposed. You must have straps on your tops and students may not wear tube tops or strapless shirts.  Also if you have a shirt on and it has a picture of someone violating the dress code, that too is a violation. If you have any questions about dress code ask Mrs. Henkel in the Counseling Office. Let's keep it classy and covered CDO.

PARENT ORGANIZATION UPDATE
Dear CDO Parent Community,

We would like to thank the  12 families that have donated to the CDO Parent Organization since our recent email request.  As of now, we have received $610 towards our goal of covering our newsletter costs and staff appreciation commitments for this year.  We are hopeful that more families will donate to support our efforts in providing weekly parent communication and regular staff appreciation events.

Please consider a donation to CDO Parent Org so that we can cover our newsletter costs.  If every family that reads our weekly email donated, we could cover all of our costs for our newsletter annual fee and staff appreciation events throughout the year.

Please drop off a donation to the office for CDO Parent Org or use our donate button below.  We will provide you with a tax receipt for your donation.

PARENT OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE FEEDBACK

Here are links to the two different parent surveys that need to be done for CDO.  We have until Spring Break to get as many surveys completed as possible.   These are the same surveys that all of the schools need to complete.  Each survey gives the parent the opportunity to pick the school that they are filling out the survey for in case they have students in more than one school. The students will complete their surveys at school through their math classes.

The AdvancEd Survey:

DRESS CODE

  • HEY DORADOS!  This is a reminder that the dress code is still in effect.  Ladies, your tops must have straps on the shoulders, no showing or exposed undergarments and your midriff, front and back, must be covered.  Open or exposed backs on shirts are not allowed, either. Gentlemen, same for you: no exposed undergarments, no tank tops where the armpit hole extends to the waist, no exposed midriff and no images or language on shirts that violate the dress code.  Dress code violators will be directed to Mrs. Henkel in Counseling where they will exchange their top for a CDO t-shirt.  Keep it classy CDO.

STUDENT IDs

  • A GENTLE REMINDER ABOUT IDs:  IDs must be worn and displayed while on campus by all students. Around the neck or on the bag facing front is perfectly acceptable.  In the pocket or out of site is unacceptable - students must have it on and showing. If you don't have it on or showing in front you will most likely receive a lunch detention.  Thanks for your thoughtful cooperation.
