FROM OUR COUNSELORS
News from the Counseling Department
Week of February 1, 2016

Pre-registration for classes for the 2016-2017 school year starts this week!
Counselors will be visiting all of the 9-11th grade English classes during the weeks of February 1 and February 8 to discuss pre-registration for the 2016-2017 school year. Students will be reminded of the graduation requirements and will be given a copy of their transcript so that they can plan for the appropriate classes for next year. In addition, students will be updating the hard copy summary of their ECAP (Education and Career Action Plan - a graduation requirement!) with the counselors that will be kept on file and available to students for review and revision. Students should also be updating their AzCIS account (another component of ECAP) from home. Please ask your student to show you the progress that he/she has made.
Shortly following the English class visits, all 9-11th graders will meet with counselors in the computer lab (again, with their English class) so that they can enter their course requests directly into the computer. Prior to meeting in the lab, every student should have completed a hard copy of their course requests that should be reviewed with a parent (we ask for a parent signature on the form as well).
If you or your student has any questions about which classes should be taken next year, we encourage you/your student to come in and meet with the appropriate counselor for assistance.

A pre-registration note for parents of Pre-IB 9th graders
Please have your Pre-IB 9th graders review their course selections with Mrs. Barcanic prior to submitting their requests. It is important to ensure that they remain on-track for entering the IB program their junior year. Thank you!

SAT and ACT Registration
It is time for college bound juniors to start looking into registering for these exams. College bound juniors should take an SAT and/or ACT during the spring of their junior year. This allows plenty of time to retest early in the senior year if desired and still meet college application deadlines. Registration for the SAT occurs at http://sat.collegeboard.org and registration for the ACT occurs at www.actstudent.org. Please contact your students' counselor if you have any questions about either of these exams.

Summer
It's time to start thinking about what your student is going to do this summer!
There are many options available to high school students throughout the summer to improve their academic skills, investigate various career fields, experience college life, give back to their communities, and many other opportunities. We will be compiling a list of various summer opportunities and posting them on our website (thank you Mrs. Mapp!) at: https://www.amphi.com/schools/cdo-high/counseling/enrichment-opportunities.aspx and click on "summer opportunities." Please check the list often as more opportunities will be added on a regular basis as they become available. Many programs require an application and application deadlines begin as early as February for summer 2016.

Don't Forget College Goal FAFSA!
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2016-2017 academic year is available now! For students planning on enrolling in college for the upcoming year, the FAFSA is the first critical step in applying for federal/state grants, loans and scholarships. In order to receive maximum consideration for all available financial aid, especially free money, and to meet the priority filing deadlines of the Arizona public universities it is important for students to complete the FAFSA by March 1, 2016. The FAFSA can be completed at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

For families that need help completing the FAFSA, College Goal FAFSA is here to help! College Goal FAFSA (previously College Goal Sunday) provides information and FREE professional assistance to students and families seeking college financial aid. High school seniors who are planning to enter college this year can get free help to complete the FAFSA, which is the first critical step in applying for financial aid. College Goal FAFSA will be held on Saturday, February 13 and Sunday, February 14. For locations and information regarding what to bring with you, please visit their website at www.collegegoal.az.gov/college-goal-fafsa.

MEET OUR STAFF - CDO TRAINER

Hi! My name is Cassidy Elliott, and I am proud to be the Athletic Trainer at CDO High School. As an athletic trainer my job is to provide outstanding health care services to all of the student athletes such as:
  • preventative care
  • emergency response
  • rehabilitation services
  • therapeutic interventions
  • clinical diagnosis

I also teach the Advanced Sports Medicine class at CDO. This CTE/JTED program is also part of HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America), a nationally and collegiately recognized association that certifies health field workers.   Students in the class are automatically part of our Sports Medicine club as well.   As a club on campus, we fundraise once a year for competitions, attend regional competition, and volunteer for service. The club goal this year is to raise enough money to attend the Spring State competition.

I have a deep passion for what I do. I initially decided I wanted to be an athletic trainer my senior year of high school while taking a sports medicine class. I then followed my dream to Northern Arizona University where I did clinical work at Coconino High School, Northern Arizona University and Ironwood Ridge High school. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training. I am nationally certified and licensed in the state of Arizona for athletic training. My hope and goal is to pass on my love for Sports Medicine and the medical field to my students, while preparing them for college and future careers.
I have lived in Arizona my entire life. I am incredibly averse to the cold and love the desert heat. Some of my joys outside of work include fishing, hiking, and being active in any way. I love watching and playing sports. I am getting married in March to a Tucson native and am looking forward to starting this new chapter in my life.

I do have a two pieces of critical information that I wish to pass on to you, the parents, to help bridge any communication gaps that may occur between you, me and our athletes.

Clearance - To help with clearance for your athlete with an injury, if you take your child to a doctor for any reason, I must have a clearance note from the physician. They will be unable to participate until I have the note. Obtaining a note on the way out of the office is much easier than trying to go back later.

Concussions - When it comes to a concussion, CDO and the Amphitheater District have very specific protocols that must be followed for clearance. This includes seeing a CIC physician. Hopefully you will never need the list of these physicians, but if that time comes, your child cannot be cleared without seeing one of those physicians. Concussions are extremely serious so I work very hard call immediately and set up a face-to-face meeting. I find meeting in person is much easier to communicate all details. They can become convoluted over the phone, or from the athlete.

Finally, please feel free to email or call me with any questions or concerns. My job is keep your child safe and healthy on and off the field.

All the best,
Miss Elliott

PARENT OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE FEEDBACK

Here are links to the two different parent surveys that need to be done for CDO.  We have until Spring Break to get as many surveys completed as possible.   These are the same surveys that all of the schools need to complete.  Each survey gives the parent the opportunity to pick the school that they are filling out the survey for in case they have students in more than one school. The students will complete their surveys at school through their math classes.

The AdvancEd Survey:
2015 - 16 Parent Survey (K-12)
In an effort to improve system practices, Amphitheater Unified District 10 is conducting a Parent Survey. We value your opinion and ask that you take the time to complete this survey.

In order to complete the survey, please go to:
Please be assured that your responses to this survey will be anonymous. Your honest opinion is appreciated. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.

The School Quality Survey:
Parent Survey about School Quality 2015-16

PARENT ORGANIZATION ANNOUNCEMENT
Dear CDO Parent Community,

Less than 10 parents attended our Parent Seminar on Student Internet Safety and Social Media last week.

Due to this reason we will not be offering the other parent seminars mentioned in our survey from the beginning of the year.

In addition, we have not received donations to cover the costs of our weekly email communication program annual fee.  For next year, we are considering changing our communication plan to provide information on our website only.

For those parents that value the weekly email, please consider a donation to CDO Parent Org so that we can cover our newsletter costs.  If every family that reads our weekly email donated, we could cover all of our costs for our newsletter annual fee and staff appreciation events throughout the year.  Please drop off a donation to the office for CDO Parent Org or use our donate button below.  We will provide you with a tax receipt for your donation.

Thanks

CDO ANNOUNCEMENTS

DRESS CODE

  • HEY DORADOS!  This is a reminder that the dress code is still in effect.  Ladies, your tops must have straps on the shoulders, no showing or exposed undergarments and your midriff, front and back, must be covered.  Open or exposed backs on shirts are not allowed, either. Gentlemen, same for you: no exposed undergarments, no tank tops where the armpit hole extends to the waist, no exposed midriff and no images or language on shirts that violate the dress code.  Dress code violators will be directed to Mrs. Henkel in Counseling where they will exchange their top for a CDO t-shirt.  Keep it classy CDO.

STUDENT IDs

  • A GENTLE REMINDER ABOUT IDs:  IDs must be worn and displayed while on campus by all students. Around the neck or on the bag facing front is perfectly acceptable.  In the pocket or out of site is unacceptable - students must have it on and showing. If you don't have it on or showing in front you will most likely receive a lunch detention.  Thanks for your thoughtful cooperation.
