FROM THE COUNSELORS
News from the Counseling Department
Week of November 30, 2015

We hope that everyone had a relaxing Thanksgiving weekend (or, that you at least found some great black Friday deals!).

Topic of the Week: Final Exam Study Tips
With two weeks of class left before final exams, we'd like to offer the following final exam study tips that you can share with your student:
  • Don't wait until the last minute to start studying. Start at least a week or two ahead of time.
  • Make sure you know what format your exams will be: multiple choice, true/false, essay, etc.
  • Make a list of topics that will be covered on each exam.
  • Use an active study strategy: flash cards, rewriting/summarizing notes, explaining the material to someone else, having someone quiz you on the material. Don't just reread your notes!!
  • Don't stay up late the night before your exam cramming. Cramming leads to increased stress and may cause you to "blank out" when you take your test.
  • Make sure you get a good night's sleep and that you eat a good breakfast the morning of your exam.
  • When you take your test, make sure you read the directions carefully.
  • Most of all, stay calm, relax, and know that you will do well on your exams if you put the time into studying that you need to.
Best of luck to everyone on final exams!

A friendly reminder to seniors:
As we enter the holiday season, we would like to remind you that your teachers and counselors are off the same days that you are. If you are in need of letters of recommendation, please plan accordingly so that they can be completed for you on time. Letters that are due on January 1, should be requested at least 2 weeks prior to the end of the semester. Letters requested on the last day of the semester will not be able to be completed in time for a January 1 deadline as many teachers and counselors travel during the winter break and will not be able to access their computers and/or the internet for you.

A note about 2nd semester schedule changes:
Although most CDO classes are year-long classes and schedule changes are not needed at the semester break, occasionally a student may require a change in his/her schedule at semester. If this is the case for your student, please have him/her visit the counselor prior to winter break to have the change processed. Students only have 5 days into 2nd semester to make any necessary changes and, due to the high volume of traffic in the counseling office at the start of the semester, it is best to make these changes prior to the break when possible and avoid the long lines that form after break.

IB applications are now available!
IB applications are now available for those sophomores who would like to join the IB program next year. WHAT IS IB?
What is IB?
  • The International Baccalaureate (IB) aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end, IB works with schools worldwide to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.
  • These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners with international awareness - qualities highly sought after by the most selective colleges and universities in the United States and around the world.
  • International Baccalaureate encourages a positive attitude toward learning by encouraging students to ask challenging questions, to reflect critically, to develop research skills, to learn how to learn, and to participate in community service.
  • Canyon del Oro is one of only three International Baccalaureate schools in Southern Arizona (and the only high school in Oro Valley) in the Southern Arizona area that is applying to become a certified IB World School beginning in 2012.

Why IB at Canyon del Oro?
By continuing to provide rigorous academic standards at Canyon del Oro High School, International Baccalaureate provides opportunities for students to be prepared compete in the 21st Century marketplace. IB learners strive to be inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced and reflective all characteristics that are valued in the Amphitheater School district and at Canyon del Oro High School.

What sets IB apart?
  • IB programmes are recognized around the world and ensure an increased adaptability and mobility for IB students. The curriculum and pedagogy of IB programmes focus on international perspectives of learning and teaching, while insisting that students fully explore their home culture and language.
  • IB World Schools must undergo an exhaustive authorization process in order to offer one or more of the programmes, which includes a study of the school's resources and commitment to the IB mission and philosophy.
  • IB teachers participate in a wide variety of professional development opportunities to constantly update their knowledge and share their expertise with colleagues around the world.
  • The core components of IB programmes encourage students to participate in creative and service-oriented activities, while at the same time emphasizing the importance of reflection on a personal and academic level. (From the IB website)

FINAL SCHEDULE

JUDGE AN AC DEC SCRIMMAGE????
Hello CDO,

We are hosting our annual December Academic Decathlon Scrimmage on Dec. 4 and 5. This year, we have a dozen schools competing, including 2 from Texas. As in the past, we are in need of people to judge the speech, interview, and essay portions of the competition. Volunteers need to be present here at CDO from 4pm to 9pm on Friday, Dec. 4. Training is provided during the first hour of that time, followed by a complimentary dinner, prepared by our award-winning Culinary Arts club. Teachers will be awarded 4.5 hours of recertification credit upon completing of the judging.

There are more than 150 students from teams all across southern Arizona and Texas competing. Judges often tell me how much they enjoy seeing students perform in these events.

If you'd like to help, please respond to Chris Yetman (cyetman@amphi.com) by Wed. 11/25. Please indicated which event you'd like to judge: speech, interview, or essay.

Thank you very much,

Chris Yetman

CDO ANNOUNCEMENTS

DRESS CODE

  • HEY DORADOS!  This is a reminder that the dress code is still in effect.  Ladies, your tops must have straps on the shoulders, no showing or exposed undergarments and your midriff, front and back, must be covered.  Open or exposed backs on shirts are not allowed, either. Gentlemen, same for you: no exposed undergarments, no tank tops where the armpit hole extends to the waist, no exposed midriff and no images or language on shirts that violate the dress code.  Dress code violators will be directed to Mrs. Henkel in Counseling where they will exchange their top for a CDO t-shirt.  Keep it classy CDO.

STUDENT IDs

  • A GENTLE REMINDER ABOUT IDs:  IDs must be worn and displayed while on campus by all students. Around the neck or on the bag facing front is perfectly acceptable.  In the pocket or out of site is unacceptable - students must have it on and showing. If you don't have it on or showing in front you will most likely receive a lunch detention.  Thanks for your thoughtful cooperation.
