News from the Counseling Department
Week of November 9, 2015
With five weeks to go until final exams, we would like to take this opportunity to remind you to regularly check the Parent Portal for grade information for your student. We would also like to ask you to encourage your student to be checking the Student Portal on a regular basis. It is important for students to be aware of how they are doing in their classes and to see missing assignment information early so that they can take care of any problems.
Save the Date!
Wednesday, November 18 at 6:00 pm in the Café
Financial Aid Night for Seniors
Come learn more about the financial aid process, the FAFSA, and how to qualify for the most amount of money. Financial aid is available for all types of post-secondary institutions. Although this evening is geared towards seniors, all grade levels are welcome. We will be hosting another Financial Aid Night for grades 9-11 in the spring.
IB applications are now available!
IB applications are now available for those sophomores who would like to join the IB program next year. Please pick up an application in the counseling office, outside Mrs. Cisco's office, or in Mr. Morin or Ms. Snider's classrooms. Applications must be submitted no later than Friday, December 4 at 3:30 pm to either Mrs. Cisco or Mrs. Barcanic. Please see Mrs. Cisco or Mrs. Barcanic if you have any questions!!
Another great opportunity....
CDO will be offering the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) for students on Monday, November 16 at 8:30 am. The ASVAB is the best aptitude and interest inventory available! If your student isn't sure about what career field he/she would like to go in to, this test can help them explore what they would be good at doing, and what they would enjoy doing (and where those two things overlap!). Please have your student sign up in the counseling office.

Hello Dorados! The School Resource Officers would like to take the opportunity to talk about the philosophy of the Oro Valley Police Department regarding the SRO program. With the recent event which occurred in South Carolina involving police use of force SRO programs across the nation are reviewing their procedures and approach to school based policing. The Oro Valley Police Department School Resource Officer program has been in place without interruption since 1977. While the program has grown and developed since its inception, currently we follow the National Association of School Resource Officers (N.A. S.R.O.) triad concept. The SRO triad follows three individualized concepts to include teacher, informal counselor and law enforcement. Your SRO's strive to make positive relationships with the students on campus through daily interactions, high visibility and an open door policy. This has been proven to foster a positive environment making officers more approachable for all students. The SRO's teach a variety of different topics to include distracted driving, 4th amendment, and current drug/alcohol awareness. The open door policy enables students to speak with an Officer about possible illegal activity, legal questions, personal issues and career mentoring. While law enforcement is a part of the SRO triad the majority of time spent with students is being an informal counselor and teacher. If you ever have any questions or concerns please contact Officer Beauchamp or Officer Brown.

MEET JENNIFER ATTEBERRY-PIERPONT
|
Meet Mrs. Atteberry-Pierpont
My name is Jennifer Atteberry-Pierpont and I am the Career and Technical Education, Early Childhood Education Teacher, CDO Preschool Director, CTE Department Head, and FCCLA-Early Childhood Advisor. I have been teaching at CDO for 12 years and I absolutely LOVE being here. CDO is home for me as I graduated from CDO myself and couldn't imagine teaching anywhere else. I am married to my husband, Eric (also a CDO grad) who is a Paramedic and Firefighter for Northwest Fire District and we have two wonderful children, Blake and Kelcy. Blake attended CDO Preschool and is now a first grader at Harelson Elementary and Kelcy is finishing her last year as a CDO Preschooler and will be off to Kindergarten next fall. Both of our kids have been born and raised as Dorados and are very excited about attending high school here in the future. In our extra time as family we enjoy various outdoor activities such as camping, riding in the sand dunes, and lots of boating and water skiing. We love spending time together and having lots of fun and laughs along the way.
I currently teach four levels of Early Childhood Education where we learn about children from prenatal to age eight. We cover the areas of development and how to work with children in developmentally appropriate ways. We interact with the children here at our on-site preschool. CDO Preschool enrolls district employee's children as well as community children aged 2.5 to 5 years old. CDO Preschool has a Five Star Rating from Arizona's First Things First, Quality First Program.
As the FCCLA - Early Childhood Advisor I have the opportunity to watch the students as they build and gain leadership skills by attending various leadership conferences and workshops. These students are then able to put their ideas and skills to work by competing in areas such as community service activities, community awareness activities, and planning and teaching with children. Our students are consistently ranked toward the top of the state and make CDO very proud!!
In addition to my other titles, I am also the Career and Technical Education Department Head. I help to oversee all of the phenomenal CTE programs that CDO offers your children. All of our teachers and programs work to create hands-on, real life applications of our areas of content.
As I said above I can't imagine coming anywhere else each day for work and I absolutely LOVE CDO! It is always great to be a Dorado!

CDO ANNOUNCEMENTS
DRESS CODE
- HEY DORADOS! This is a reminder that the dress code is still in effect. Ladies, your tops must have straps on the shoulders, no showing or exposed undergarments and your midriff, front and back, must be covered. Open or exposed backs on shirts are not allowed, either. Gentlemen, same for you: no exposed undergarments, no tank tops where the armpit hole extends to the waist, no exposed midriff and no images or language on shirts that violate the dress code. Dress code violators will be directed to Mrs. Henkel in Counseling where they will exchange their top for a CDO t-shirt. Keep it classy CDO.
STUDENT IDs
- A GENTLE REMINDER ABOUT IDs: IDs must be worn and displayed while on campus by all students. Around the neck or on the bag facing front is perfectly acceptable. In the pocket or out of site is unacceptable - students must have it on and showing. If you don't have it on or showing in front you will most likely receive a lunch detention. Thanks for your thoughtful cooperation.
