News from the Counseling Department
Week of November 2, 2015
Attendance Concerns
As we enter the final seven weeks of the first semester, we would like to take a few moments to remind you about the CDO attendance policy. According to the policy, a student may lose credit in a class when he/she exceeds 7 absences in a class for the semester. These absences may be excused or unexcused.
We have many students who have reached this limit, or are close to reaching the limit, this semester. Please keep in mind that it is extremely difficult for your student to be successful in his classes when he is not in class. We know that there are times that an absence is unavoidable. In those cases, please contact the attendance office to excuse the absence. We also recommend that your student check his teacher's website for missed work and/or email the teacher for work. In addition, you can check the Parent Portal (and your student can check the Student Portal) for current missing assignments and grade information.
If there is a medical condition that is keeping your student from attending school regularly, please contact your student's counselor for information about our Chronic Health program.
Save the Date!

Financial Aid Night for Seniors
Come learn more about the financial aid process, the FAFSA, and how to qualify for the most amount of money. Financial aid is available for all types of post-secondary institutions. Although this evening is geared towards seniors, all grade levels are welcome. We will be hosting another Financial Aid Night for grades 9-11 in the spring.
IB applications are now available!
IB applications are now available for those sophomores who would like to join the IB program next year. Please pick up an application in the counseling office, outside Mrs. Cisco's office, or in Mr. Morin or Ms. Snider's rooms. Applications must be submitted no later than Friday, December 4 at 3:30 pm to either Mrs. Cisco or Mrs. Barcanic. Please see Mrs. Cisco or Mrs. Barcanic if you have any questions!!
Another great opportunity....
CDO will be offering the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) for students on Monday, November 16 at 8:30 am. The ASVAB is the best aptitude and interest inventory available! If your student isn't sure about what career field he/she would like to go in to, this test can help them explore what they would be good at doing, and what they would enjoy doing (and where those two things overlap!). Please have your student sign up in the counseling office.

Scholars' Programs
There are many opportunities for Canyon del Oro students to excel, achieve academic excellence, and to be recognized for their achievements. Advanced placement classes, weighted courses, and the International Baccalaureate program are opportunities for students to go beyond - to challenge themselves and open doors.
Seals of Excellence are awarded by each CDO department and are awarded in the senior year. Seals are affixed to the diploma and recorded on the student's transcript. Each department has its own criteria:
National Honor Society: NHS recognizes academic excellence, character, leadership and service among high school students. Activities focus on service at Canyon del Oro High School and in the community. Juniors and Seniors with a minimum weighted GPA of 3.60 are contacted in the fall and given the opportnity to apply. Students must maintain a weighted 3.60 GPA in order to remain active memebers of the Honor Society. Only current, active members of NHS are eligible for recognition at the Senior Honors Assembly and the graduation ceremony.
Academic Letter: Students are eligible for an Academic Letter during the fall and spring semesters of their junior year and their senior year. Students must have an overall weighted GPA of 3.5 or higher, a weighted GPA of 3.5 or higher in the semester for which the letter is awarded, and have taken at least two "scholars classes." See Rhonda Ellerd in the principal's office for an application.
Arizona Academic Scholars: Arizona Academic Scholars is an initiative of the Arizona Business and Education Coalition (ABEC). Students receive a certificate for completing the following with a minimum grade of C in each core course, and in two credits of a language other than English. Core courses consist of the following: 4 credits of English; 3 credits of math (Minimum of Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2; 3 credits of social studies (World History, U.S. History, Government/Economics); 3 credits of a lab acience (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics).

CDO ANNOUNCEMENTS
DRESS CODE
- HEY DORADOS! This is a reminder that the dress code is still in effect. Ladies, your tops must have straps on the shoulders, no showing or exposed undergarments and your midriff, front and back, must be covered. Open or exposed backs on shirts are not allowed, either. Gentlemen, same for you: no exposed undergarments, no tank tops where the armpit hole extends to the waist, no exposed midriff and no images or language on shirts that violate the dress code. Dress code violators will be directed to Mrs. Henkel in Counseling where they will exchange their top for a CDO t-shirt. Keep it classy CDO.
STUDENT IDs
- A GENTLE REMINDER ABOUT IDs: IDs must be worn and displayed while on campus by all students. Around the neck or on the bag facing front is perfectly acceptable. In the pocket or out of site is unacceptable - students must have it on and showing. If you don't have it on or showing in front you will most likely receive a lunch detention. Thanks for your thoughtful cooperation.
