News from the Counseling Department
Week of October 26, 2015
Topic of the week: Demonstrated Interest
As I sit in on college visits and attend college-related workshops, one phrase keeps popping up: "demonstrated interest." Many colleges and universities (especially the more selective ones) use "demonstrated interest" as a factor in determining admissions. When an admissions officer is looking at two similar applications and one applicant has demonstrated interest in that university over the past year or two by attending a high school visit or talking with an admissions representative at a college fair, and the other applicant has never demonstrated any interest in the university beyond the actual application, the student who demonstrated interest is going to be admitted over the student who didn't. You can demonstrate interest by attending college visits at the high school, attending college information sessions, going on the college website and filling out an interest card, going on a campus tour, etc. It is never too early to start to demonstrate interest and explore your college options!
Websites of the week:
- aztransfer.com
- At aztransfer.com students can find out how their AP, IB or CLEP scores will transfer to any of the Arizona universities or community colleges. Another nice feature of this website is the "course equivalency guide" where students can see how their Pima Community College (or any other Arizona community college) credits will transfer to any of the Arizona universities.
- Degreesearch.arizona.edu
- Designed by the University of Arizona, this site gives students the tools to identify a major that's their perfect match.
- Net Price Calculator
- This calculator is specific to the University of Arizona, however due to recent legislation, all colleges and universities are required to have a cost of attendance, or net price, calculator on their website.
- FAFSA 4caster
-
- This site, hosted by the federal government, will help you understand your options for paying for college. After providing some basic information, you will receive an estimate of your eligibility for federal student aid.
Save the Date!
Wednesday, November 18 at 6:00 pm in the CDO Café
Financial Aid Night for Seniors
Come learn more about the financial aid process, the FAFSA, and how to qualify for the most amount of money. Financial aid is available for all types of post-secondary institutions. Although this evening is geared towards seniors, all grade levels are welcome. We will be hosting another Financial Aid Night for grades 9-11 in the spring.
Another great opportunity....
CDO will be offering the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) for students on Monday, November 16 at 8:30 am. The ASVAB is the best aptitude and interest inventory available! If your student isn't sure about what career field he/she would like to go in to, this test can help them explore what they would be good at doing, and what they would enjoy doing (and where those two things overlap!). Please have your student sign up in the counseling office.
The SAT is changing!
In March 2016, the CollegeBoard will unveil a new SAT. Some of the changes include:
- It better reflects what students are learning in class
- "SAT vocabulary words" are gone (the new test will focus on words and phrases found in texts in many different subjects - words students are likely to use in college and career; set in context so students can draw meaning from the passages)
- There is no penalty for guessing
- It focuses on the math that matters most for college and a wide variety of careers
- The essay is optional
- Scores range from 400-1600
- CollegeBoard is partnering with Khan Academy to offer free test practice for all students (khanacademy.org)

NASSP's 2016 Prudential Spirit of Community Award: The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program is the United States' largest youth recognition program based exclusively on volunteer community service. The program was created in 1995 by Prudential in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) to honor middle level and high school students for outstanding service to others at the local, state, and national level. The program's goals are to applaud young people who already are making a positive difference in their towns and neighborhoods, and to inspire others to think about how they might contribute to their communities.
Students chosen as Local Honorees receive a Certificate of Achievement from their schools or organizations. Those who qualify (26 hours for age 10 and younger, 50 hours for ages 11-15 and 100 hours for older students) also receive the President's Volunteer Service Award.
State Honorees receive an award of $1,000, an engraved silver medallion, and an all-expense-paid trip with a parent or guardian to Washington, D.C., for national recognition events.
National Honorees receive an additional award of $5,000, an engraved gold medallion, a crystal trophy for their schools or organizations, and a $5,000 grant from The Prudential Foundation for a non-profit, charitable organization of their choice.
