FROM THE COUNSELORS
News from the Counseling Office
Week of October 19, 2015

Topic of the week:   Calculating GPA and Core GPA
By special request, we will be sharing the procedure for calculating GPA and core GPA this week.
  1. Understand how many points each letter grade is worth:
    1. For calculating unweighted GPA, all courses: A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0
    2. For calculating weighted GPA, Honors, AP, IB, Pre-AP, and Intro to Calculus courses only receive the following weighted points: A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, F=0 (all regular courses receive the amount of points as indicated in "a" above)
  2. Assign the appropriate number of points to each grade earned
  3. Count up the total number of grades earned
  4. Divide the sum of the points earned by the total number of grades earned
  5. Example: Student earned the following grades
    1. Pre-AP English 9 - B (3 points unweighted, 4 points weighted)
    2. Pre-AP Biology - A (4 points unweighted, 5 points weighted)
    3. Geometry - A (4 points)
    4. World History - B (3 points)
    5. Team Sports - A (4 points)
    6. Spanish I - A (4 points)
    7. 3+4+4+3+4+4=22; 22/6= 3.67 unweighted GPA
    8. 4+5+4+3+4+4=24; 24/6= 4.0 weighted GPA
  6. When calculating core GPA, the same process is used but only the following courses are included: English (4 credits), Math (4 credits), Science (3 credits), History (2 credits, one of which must be US History), Language (2 credits of the same language), Fine Art (1 credit) = 16 credits

Follow-up to College Week:
One thing that came up repeatedly during College Week two weeks ago was the importance of "demonstrated interest" in the admissions process. When an admissions officer is looking at two similar applications, he is going to choose the student who has demonstrated interest in the school by attending college visits, information nights, tours, etc., over the student who has not demonstrated any interest beyond their application. If your student is interested in any of the following schools, please have him attend the visit this week!
California Baptist University (Riverside, CA)        Thursday, Oct. 22, 9:00 am
Azusa Pacific University (Azusa, CA)                    Thursday, Oct. 22, 12:30 pm
Princeton University (Princeton, NJ)                   Thursday, Oct. 22, 1:00 pm
National Christian College Fair (at PRCA)       Thursday, Oct. 22, 6:00-8:00 pm

Parents of Pre-IB Sophomores: We invite your student to attend an IB Info meeting with IB Alumni on Friday, October 23 during 3rd period in the Lecture Hall. The time to apply to IB is drawing near and we would like to provide your student with the opportunity to learn more about IB, hear from CDO IB grads who are now using their IB skills in college, and get their questions about IB answered before they make their final decision about whether or not to apply. Please contact Mrs. Barcanic or Mrs. Cisco if you have any questions!

WHAT IS YOUR STUDENT GOING TO DO AFTER CDO????

Post High School Options for your student

Four-Year University

There are many factors to consider when choosing a university, such as size and location of the campus, cost, degree programs, extra-curricular activities, and other opportunities like study abroad programs. Begin researching schools early, certainly by your junior year, and use collegeboard.org to help you with this process. If possible, visit the campus, or campuses, that you think you might want to attend. See the "College Planning" page for more information.

Community College
A variety of students attend community college. Some students are current high school students taking classes toward graduation, others are working toward an Assoicate's degree or other vocational programs, and other students attend community college to complete general education classes before transferring to a four-year university.
Click here for a list of all of our in-state community colleges. Click here to find out more about the University of Arizona's Transfer Student Center - just one example of how universities work together with community colleges.

It isn't too early to become "college ready" - click below to find out more:
Vocational, Trade and/or Technical Schools
Vocational schools, sometimes called trade or technical shcools, provide students with job-specific training. Most programs last approximately two years. Some techinical schools also offer the opportunity to earn a Bachelor's degre. Consider the following when researching these schools:
  • Placement Rate: How many graduates are actually placed in their career field?
  • Student Completion Rate/Graduation Rate: Find out how many students actually complete their programs.
  • Facilities: Are the facilities up-to-date? Avoid schools with out-dated facilities and equipment.
  • Is the school accredited? (This means the school is doing things, "by the book" so to speak.)
  • Services: What "extras" does the school offer? Is there a career guidance office? If so, will they assist you in finding employment or internships once you've graduated?
  • Tuition/Fees: How much will it cost to attend the program? Are there any hidden fees? Is financial assistance available to you? How much aid is comprised of loans?
WARNING: Some for-profit schools have recently been in the news and might lose accreditation for NOT providing adequate instruction and curriculum.

Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships provide on-the-job training that help to prepare exceptional workers for Arizona's industry. Arizona has more than 100 registered apprenticeship programs in such industries as agriculture, forestry, and fishing; mining; construction; manufacturing; transportation, communications, electric, gas, and sanitary
services; services; and public administration.

Military
The Armed Services provides vocational skills training to succeed in one of the many military occupations in return for a commitment of time. Because the career, training, and educational opportunities are different for each branch of the military, students who are interested, should talk to recruiters representing different military branches. For more information on a military
service option, see a local recruiter or go to one of the military websites:

PSAT PRACTICE

If you're taking the upcoming PSAT/NMSQT®, we recommend taking a practice test so you know what it's like on test day

This full-length practice test is made by the College Board (the creators of the real PSAT/NMSQT®) and has the same format that you'll see on October 14 or 28.
We've also included a scoring form so that you can see how you did. Or, if you prefer, you can download the College Board's Daily Practice for the new SAT app, take the test, take a picture of your answers, and get an instant score.
You can qualify for national recognition and scholarships based on your performance on the PSAT/NMSQT®. We hope you find this practice test and Official SAT® Practice on Khan Academy helpful in preparing for the new PSAT/NMSQT® and SAT!

CDO ANNOUNCEMENTS

DRESS CODE

  • HEY DORADOS!  This is a reminder that the dress code is still in effect.  Ladies, your tops must have straps on the shoulders, no showing or exposed undergarments and your midriff, front and back, must be covered.  Open or exposed backs on shirts are not allowed, either. Gentlemen, same for you: no exposed undergarments, no tank tops where the armpit hole extends to the waist, no exposed midriff and no images or language on shirts that violate the dress code.  Dress code violators will be directed to Mrs. Henkel in Counseling where they will exchange their top for a CDO t-shirt.  Keep it classy CDO.

STUDENT IDs

  • A GENTLE REMINDER ABOUT IDs:  IDs must be worn and displayed while on campus by all students. Around the neck or on the bag facing front is perfectly acceptable.  In the pocket or out of site is unacceptable - students must have it on and showing. If you don't have it on or showing in front you will most likely receive a lunch detention.  Thanks for your thoughtful cooperation.
