COUNSELING DEPARTMENT INFORMATION
News from the Counseling Department
Week of September 14, 2015

This week's tip:
It's never too early to start talking about college and careers with your children!

I frequently ask my son (who is only eleven years old), when it fits appropriately into the conversation, where he wants to go to college or what he wants to be when he grows up. Of course, the answer often changes depending upon his favorite mascot, favorite colors, or a commercial that he recently saw on tv, but the reality is that he's thinking about college! On the flip side of that tip is that it's also never too late! So, even if you haven't been talking about college, it's not too late to start.

To help you explore college options with your student, there are several college fairs coming up that you might be interested in attending. The largest one in town is
Tucson College Night (http://www.tusd1.org/contents/depart/counseling/college.asp) which will take place Tuesday, September, 29 from 6:30-8:30 pm at the TCC. Tucson College Night usually includes over 200 college participants and is a great way for you to do a lot of college research in one night! The
NACAC National College Fair will be held at the Phoenix Convention Center on Sunday, September 27 from 11:00a-3:00p. The National College Fair also hosts close to 200 colleges. In addition, the
National Christian College Fair will be held at Pusch Ridge Christian Academy (9500 N Oracle Rd) on Thursday, October 22 from 6:00-8:00 pm. These are all great opportunities to find out more about your various college options!

You can also encourage your student to take advantage of the many college representatives that we will have coming through our counseling career room this year. You can find all of the scheduled visits on our college visit calendar (http://www.amphi.com/schools/cdo-high/counseling.aspx). The representatives are there to share information about their college with students so that students can make a good college choice for themselves. These visits are for all grade levels of students, and students can register for these visits and print out a ticket to attend from our website.

On a related note, the counselors will begin their fall classroom guidance lessons the week of September 21. During these lessons we will be meeting with all grade level students through their English classes to work on their
ECAP, discuss graduation requirements, review to ensure they are on track for graduation, discuss college entrance requirements, and engage in 4-10 year planning.

Please don't forget to review your student's ECAP with him/her. The ECAP is the student's Education and Career Action Plan and it is a graduation requirement for all students. Students work on their ECAP through AzCIS (an online portfolio system) that can be accessed at home and at school, and transfer the information onto an ECAP summary card with counselors during the fall guidance lessons.
A Note to Parents of Seniors
The University of Arizona has continued with their new admission policy this year, offering "Wildcat Promise I" and "Wildcat Promise II" deadlines before switching back to their traditional "Rolling Admissions" policy.
This means that students who have a completed application (application, transcript, and fee) on file by October 15 will receive an admissions decision on November 5. Students who have a completed application on file by November 5 will receive an admissions decision on December 3. After November 5, the U of A will revert back to rolling admissions (students will receive an admissions decision approximately 6-8 weeks after completing their application in its entirety).
In addition, the University of Arizona is continuing their
guaranteed tuition plan! The University of Arizona will be offering fixed tuition for all incoming freshman for their four consecutive years of study.

Scholarship Spotlight:
CDO can nominate one student for the Baird Foundation Scholarship. This is a $12,500 per year renewable scholarship to the University of Arizona. Eligible nominees must meet all of the following minimum requirements: 3.5 cumulative unweighted GPA, US citizen or permanent resident, attendance at an Arizona high school for at least two years preceding application, demonstrated evidence of leadership qualities, and strongly considering enrollment at the U of A for fall 2016. If your student wishes to be considered as CDO's nominee for this scholarship, please have him/her pick up a pre-application in the counseling office. The pre-application is due into the counseling office no later than 3:30 pm on Friday, September 25, 2015 in order for your student to be considered. No late applications will be accepted.

CDO FOOTBALL COMMUNITY SERVICE
Canyon del Oro Footbal presents Armed Forces Night
As many of you know, Canyon del Oro Football is very passionate about giving back to our nation's service members - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_86tt1RNYo - the few who fight to protect the freedom of this great country. Often times many of these inspiring individuals come home with wounds you can and can't see, like a missing limb, combat stress, or depression. Because they've risked everything for us, we are committed to raising awareness and funds for these wounded service members and their caregivers.

Canyon del Oro Football is proud to host an event benefiting an organization whose mission is to honor and empower Wounded Warriors. Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) has a big, audacious goal: to foster the most successful, well-adjusted generation of wounded service members in our nation's history. We're challenging ourselves to help WWP reach this vision, and we need your help.
WWP offers 20 holistic programs to wounded service members and their caregivers completely free of charge and 100% of the funds raised through the this event go directly to Wounded Warrior Project to help fuel these programs.

Canyon del Oro High School Football will be hosting "Armed Forces Night", during its home game on September 18, 2015. CDO Football will be honoring the CDO Football alums who are active duty service members and veterans at halftime. CDO will also be honoring all active duty armed forces members and veterans for their sacrifice in serving our country throughout the night, and will be raising money for Wounded Warrior Project through donations
Please join our effort and give what you can by donating through our page, go to cdofootball.com for further info, or attend the game and donate in person. Click the donate button at the top and enter the amount you are able to give. Thank you in advance for your support!

CDO ANNOUNCEMENTS

DRESS CODE

  • HEY DORADOS!  This is a reminder that the dress code is still in effect.  Ladies, your tops must have straps on the shoulders, no showing or exposed undergarments and your midriff, front and back, must be covered.  Open or exposed backs on shirts are not allowed, either. Gentlemen, same for you: no exposed undergarments, no tank tops where the armpit hole extends to the waist, no exposed midriff and no images or language on shirts that violate the dress code.  Dress code violators will be directed to Mrs. Henkel in Counseling where they will exchange their top for a CDO t-shirt.  Keep it classy CDO.

STUDENT IDs

  • A GENTLE REMINDER ABOUT IDs:  IDs must be worn and displayed while on campus by all students. Around the neck or on the bag facing front is perfectly acceptable.  In the pocket or out of site is unacceptable - students must have it on and showing. If you don't have it on or showing in front you will most likely receive a lunch detention.  Thanks for your thoughtful cooperation.
