COUNSELING DEPARTMENT INFORMATION
News from the Counseling Department
Week of September 7, 2015

The most common question heard in the counseling office last week was,
"When do I start applying to college?" The answer, if your student is a senior who intends to go to a four-year college or university immediately after graduation, is
"Now." Your student should have finalized his or her list of schools that he/she wants to apply to and should be looking at the applications and application deadlines for those schools. Some deadlines will be as early as October. So that your student has time to complete the applications, write the required essays (if applicable), and secure the necessary letters of recommendation, it is imperative that they begin planning now. If your student is planning on attending Pima Community College after graduation, he/she can wait until early in the calendar year to begin the process for application (it is not nearly as extensive).

Other common questions that come up during the college application process:
-          How do I get an official transcript? Official transcripts are ordered through the Registrar's office. There is a form that is to be filled out in the counseling office. Transcripts that are to be mailed cost $1.00 each. There is no charge for transcripts that are picked up.
-          What if I can't afford the application/SAT/ACT fee? If your student can't afford the various fees associated with applying to college, please have him/her go see his/her counselor. There are fee waivers available to students who meet certain criteria.
-          How do I get a letter of recommendation? Letters of recommendation are often a required component of the college or scholarship application. Students should ensure that they are allowing their recommender adequate time to complete the recommendation (at least two weeks is preferred). We offer a Letter of Recommendation Guide for Students on our website (http://www.amphi.com/media/4922121/Letter-of-Recommendation-Guide-for-Students.pdf) to help students further with this process. To secure a letter from a counselor, we ask that students complete the Letter of Recommendation Request Form (found in the aforementioned Guide) and then bring that form in when they meet with their counselor to ask for the letter. We are happy to write letters for students!

If you, or your student, have any questions during the college application process, please don't hesitate to contact us!

To help you further, we will be hosting our annual College Planning Night for Seniors on Wednesday, September 16 at 6:00 pm in the Café. We will also be hosting a College Planning Night for IB Seniors on Thursday, September 17 at 6:30 pm in the Lecture Hall. We will review the college application process, college entrance exams, finding scholarships, choosing a college, and several other topics those evenings. We hope to see you there!

PSAT registration is going on now!!
The PSAT is both a practice SAT and the qualifying exam for the National Merit scholarship (when taken in the junior year). The PSAT is only offered once a year and, because the primary date falls during October break, CDO will be giving it on the alternate date, Wednesday, October 28. Both sophomores and juniors are encouraged to take the PSAT as it is good practice for sophomores and it is the National Merit qualifying exam for juniors. When students receive their scores back, they will also receive their test books and all of the answers to the questions, making this an excellent study tool for the SAT! Registration takes place in the bookstore and the cost of the exam is $25. We only receive a set number of exams and when they are sold out, that is it. Please do not delay...have your student register now!

CDO FOOTBALL COMMUNITY SERVICE
Canyon del Oro Footbal presents Armed Forces Night
As many of you know, Canyon del Oro Football is very passionate about giving back to our nation's service members - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_86tt1RNYo - the few who fight to protect the freedom of this great country. Often times many of these inspiring individuals come home with wounds you can and can't see, like a missing limb, combat stress, or depression. Because they've risked everything for us, we are committed to raising awareness and funds for these wounded service members and their caregivers.

Canyon del Oro Football is proud to host an event benefiting an organization whose mission is to honor and empower Wounded Warriors. Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) has a big, audacious goal: to foster the most successful, well-adjusted generation of wounded service members in our nation's history. We're challenging ourselves to help WWP reach this vision, and we need your help.
WWP offers 20 holistic programs to wounded service members and their caregivers completely free of charge and 100% of the funds raised through the this event go directly to Wounded Warrior Project to help fuel these programs.

Canyon del Oro High School Football will be hosting "Armed Forces Night", during its home game on September 18, 2015. CDO Football will be honoring the CDO Football alums who are active duty service members and veterans at halftime. CDO will also be honoring all active duty armed forces members and veterans for their sacrifice in serving our country throughout the night, and will be raising money for Wounded Warrior Project through donations
Please join our effort and give what you can by donating through our page, go to cdofootball.com for further info, or attend the game and donate in person. Click the donate button at the top and enter the amount you are able to give. Thank you in advance for your support!

CDO ANNOUNCEMENTS

DRESS CODE

  • HEY DORADOS!  This is a reminder that the dress code is still in effect.  Ladies, your tops must have straps on the shoulders, no showing or exposed undergarments and your midriff, front and back, must be covered.  Open or exposed backs on shirts are not allowed, either. Gentlemen, same for you: no exposed undergarments, no tank tops where the armpit hole extends to the waist, no exposed midriff and no images or language on shirts that violate the dress code.  Dress code violators will be directed to Mrs. Henkel in Counseling where they will exchange their top for a CDO t-shirt.  Keep it classy CDO.

STUDENT IDs

  • A GENTLE REMINDER ABOUT IDs:  IDs must be worn and displayed while on campus by all students. Around the neck or on the bag facing front is perfectly acceptable.  In the pocket or out of site is unacceptable - students must have it on and showing. If you don't have it on or showing in front you will most likely receive a lunch detention.  Thanks for your thoughtful cooperation.
