FROM THE COUNSELING DEPARTMENT

News from the Counseling Department

Week of April 27, 2015

Congratulations to CDO senior Bo Shimmin for being selected as a Gates Millennium Scholar!

Last call for Honors Assembly forms!

If your senior has not already turned in his form from the graduation packet that had him list the colleges he was accepted to and any scholarships received, please have him do so immediately! That form is used, in addition to being our main source of data collection, as a way to gather information about who deserves to be recognized at the Honors Assembly. The form was due last Friday (April 24) and, although it may now be too late to have the information printed in the Honor's Assembly program, we will still accept the forms and will announce the information contained on them at the Honors Assembly when appropriate.

Senior Parents:

With two and one-half weeks left for seniors, please take a few minutes to ensure that your senior student is passing all of his classes, has completed all of his distance learning classes, and secured an Early Grade Report form for his Pima classes. If you have any questions about your student's graduation status, please feel free to contact his counselor and/or the teacher of any class that you are concerned about. We look forward to seeing you at graduation!

National Practice Test Day

Freshman and Sophomores - you will see a redesigned PSAT this fall. Test drive it now by taking a free PSAT practice test on Saturday, May 9 from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm at the Pima Community College Northwest Campus. This opportunity is offered by Kaplan Test Prep. Space is limited, so if you would like to participate, please register today: kaptest.com/psatpractice. Students should bring #2 pencils and a calculator.

ECAP update

As a friendly reminder, all students should be working on updating their ECAP (Education and Career Action Plan) on a regular basis. Counselors will be visiting the senior English classes on Monday, April 27 to give seniors one final opportunity to finalize their ECAP summary card before graduation. If your senior does not have an English class on the CDO campus this year, please have your student see his/her counselor ASAP to finalize his/her ECAP.

Please remember that students can visitwww.azcis.intocareers.org (user name: canyondohs and password: 4azcis02) anytime to continue to work on their ECAP. ECAP summary cards are housed in the counseling office.

Summer School

Summer school will be offered this summer through the Amphitheater School District and it will be held at CDO. For specific information regarding registration and courses available, please visit http://www.amphi.com/district/amphitheater-community-schools.aspx or pick up a summer school flyer in the counseling office.

The district will also be offering online summer school again this summer through MDLP. Information about online summer classes is posted on the district website (www.amphi.com). Students will need to have a contract signed by both the student and a parent (the contract can be found online and should be brought to the counselor completed when the student comes in to sign-up), as well as an online advisement form completed by their counselor before they can register for online summer school. Please have your student schedule an appointment with his/her counselor to discuss this further if there is an interest in taking an online summer class.

Summer Opportunities

Just a friendly reminder that there are still many great summer programs available for students of all ages this summer. Counselor, Ms. Pati Mapp has been hard at work organizing a list of these opportunities for you: http://www.amphi.com/schools/cdo-high/counseling/summer-opportunities.aspx.

CONGRATULATIONS - ACADEMIC DECATHLON

The CDO Academic Decathlon team faced their final challenge of the year, traveling to Garden Grove, CA, where they faced 52 other teams in the 2015 Nationals Academic Decathlon Finals. Up against teams from schools more than twice the size of CDO, our team finished 4th in the large school division and 5th overall out of all teams competing,

Winning medals were:

Nicole Enos (gold in essay, silver in interview)
Caleb Yetman (gold in essay, bronze in math, bronze in social science)
Martin Ramirez Araujo (gold in music)

Nicole earned a special award and a $250 scholarship for the top scoring student on the team. She finished in the top ten of all students in her category.
Caleb earned a special award and a $250 scholarship for being selected by his teammates as the Most Valuable Person on the team. Caleb also earned the highest score ever by a CDO student in his category.

The rest of the team which includes Luisa Placencia Carranza, Christina Redford, Michael Yuhas, Sarah Spurlin, Mason Sargent, and Matt Welch, performed extremely well, increasing their team score (from state) and earning the third highest total score for a CDO team in the history of Arizona Academic Decathlon.

We are extremely proud of this team. They've worked since August to reach this goal and their hard work has paid off with this excellent showing.

CDO ANNOUNCEMENTS

DRESS CODE

  • HEY DORADOS!  This is a reminder that the dress code is still in effect.  Ladies, your tops must have straps on the shoulders, no showing or exposed undergarments and your midriff, front and back, must be covered.  Open or exposed backs on shirts are not allowed, either. Gentlemen, same for you: no exposed undergarments, no tank tops where the armpit hole extends to the waist, no exposed midriff and no images or language on shirts that violate the dress code.  Dress code violators will be directed to Mrs. Henkel in Counseling where they will exchange their top for a CDO t-shirt.  Keep it classy CDO.

STUDENT IDs

  • A GENTLE REMINDER ABOUT IDs:  IDs must be worn and displayed while on campus by all students. Around the neck or on the bag facing front is perfectly acceptable.  In the pocket or out of site is unacceptable - students must have it on and showing. If you don't have it on or showing in front you will most likely receive a lunch detention.  Thanks for your thoughtful cooperation.
