Counseling News

News from the Counseling Department

Week of November 10, 2014

With six weeks to go until final exams, we would like to take this opportunity to remind you to regularly check the Parent Portal for grade information for your student. We would also like to ask you to encourage your student to be checking the Student Portal on a regular basis. It is important for students to be aware of how they are doing in their classes and to see missing assignment information early so that they can take care of any problems.

Save the Date!

Wednesday, November 19 at 6:00 pm in the Café

Financial Aid Night for Seniors

Come learn more about the financial aid process, the FAFSA, and how to qualify for the most amount of money. Financial aid is available for all types of post-secondary institutions. Although this evening is geared towards seniors, all grade levels are welcome. We will be hosting another Financial Aid Night for grades 9-11 in the spring.

IB applications are now available!

IB applications are now available for those sophomores who would like to join the IB program next year. Please pick up an application in the counseling office or outside Mrs. Cisco's office. Applications must be submitted no later than Friday, December 5 at 3:30 pm to either Mrs. Cisco or Mrs. Barcanic. Please see Mrs. Cisco or Mrs. Barcanic if you have any questions!!

Another great opportunity....

CDO will be offering the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) for students on Thursday, November 13 at 8:30 am. The ASVAB is the best aptitude and interest inventory available! If your student isn't sure about what career field he/she would like to go in to, this test can help them explore what they would be good at doing, and what they would enjoy doing (and where those two things overlap!). Please have your student sign up in the counseling office.

From our School Resource Officer Unit

Hello Dorados!

The Canyon Del Oro School Resource Officer Unit would like to take this opportunity to inform students, parents, and staff on the application of Arizona Revised Statute 13-2921 regarding harassment as it pertains to "bullying".  We have copied the portion of the statute that typically applies to the "bullying" situations that arise at CDO.

13-2921. Harassment; classification; definition

A. A person commits harassment if, with intent to harass or with knowledge that the person is harassing another person, the person:

1. Anonymously or otherwise contacts, communicates or causes a communication with another person by verbal, electronic, mechanical, telegraphic, telephonic or written means in a manner that harasses.

2. Continues to follow another person in or about a public place for no legitimate purpose after being asked to desist.

3. Repeatedly commits an act or acts that harass another person.

When a report of "bullying" is reported at CDO, the student who is committing the act of "bullying" is provided with a copy of the statute as it reads above.  The student then has the opportunity to ask questions of the SRO to clarify any behavior that he/she may be involved in.  After reading and understanding the statute the student is advised that further behavior or actions listed in the statute could result in their arrest.  This is a brief explanation of the process and depending on the severity of the first offense could result in an immediate arrest.  If you ever have a concern or question please contact one of the School Resource Officers.

CDO ANNOUNCEMENTS

DRESS CODE

  • HEY DORADOS!  This is a reminder that the dress code is still in effect.  Ladies, your tops must have straps on the shoulders, no showing or exposed undergarments and your midriff, front and back, must be covered.  Open or exposed backs on shirts are not allowed, either. Gentlemen, same for you: no exposed undergarments, no tank tops where the armpit hole extends to the waist, no exposed midriff and no images or language on shirts that violate the dress code.  Dress code violators will be directed to Mrs. Henkel in Counseling where they will exchange their top for a CDO t-shirt.  Keep it classy CDO.

STUDENT IDs

  • A GENTLE REMINDER ABOUT IDs:  IDs must be worn and displayed while on campus by all students. Around the neck or on the bag facing front is perfectly acceptable.  In the pocket or out of site is unacceptable - students must have it on and showing. If you don't have it on or showing in front you will most likely receive a lunch detention.  Thanks for your thoughtful cooperation.
