Communication for Gifted and Twice Exceptional Families

Marriage and Family Therapist and gifted advocate Bob Yamtich has offered to put on a workshop about Communication for Gifted

and Twice Exceptional Families.

Gifted children have dual longings: to be contained and inspired by an authority figure, and to be respected and engaged with as an equal. The ability to be a humble authority requires self-understanding and empathy. Strategies inspired by Nonviolent Communication (NVC) can help, as all involved identify their needs, empathically hear the other, and clearly self-express what they are asking for. We will consider how gifted over-excitabilities (OEs) impact the needs involved in empathy and communication. NVC offers a process for rigorous exploration of feelings and needs which allows an analytical mind to connect with both emotional wisdom and practical requests. The gifted desire for autonomy and freedom is supported by clearly distinguishing what is joyful to contribute from what seems like a demand or obligation. Families can use the skills of discussing levels of willingness to make, hold, and renegotiate agreements with clarity and care. Problem solving, including reconnecting after a conflict, becomes more clear as people distinguish between needs and the strategies to meet needs. Compassion increases as people have a sense of being heard. The workshop includes an introduction to NVC, live practice, and tools for further work.

The workshop is free and is for parents and their kids to attend together. Space is limited so register now to secure your spot!

CDO ANNOUNCEMENTS

DRESS CODE

  • HEY DORADOS!  This is a reminder that the dress code is still in effect.  Ladies, your tops must have straps on the shoulders, no showing or exposed undergarments and your midriff, front and back, must be covered.  Open or exposed backs on shirts are not allowed, either. Gentlemen, same for you: no exposed undergarments, no tank tops where the armpit hole extends to the waist, no exposed midriff and no images or language on shirts that violate the dress code.  Dress code violators will be directed to Mrs. Henkel in Counseling where they will exchange their top for a CDO t-shirt.  Keep it classy CDO.

STUDENT IDs

  • A GENTLE REMINDER ABOUT IDs:  IDs must be worn and displayed while on campus by all students. Around the neck or on the bag facing front is perfectly acceptable.  In the pocket or out of site is unacceptable - students must have it on and showing. If you don't have it on or showing in front you will most likely receive a lunch detention.  Thanks for your thoughtful cooperation.

STUDENTS

  • STUDENTS, if you are a Junior or Senior with a 3.6 or higher weighted GPA and you did not receive an NHS invitation please see Mr. Alzner in the Library or Ms. Snider in T-14 so we can check and see what happened.
  • ARE YOU 18 YEARS OLD? Will you be 18 by November 4? Do you need help navigating the voter registration website? Come to room T-24 during tutoring and Mrs. Erickson will help you get registered before the October 6, deadline. Bring your driver's license.
  • STUDENTS - HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT JOINING A CLUB on campus but not sure which one you are best suited for? This week you can find the club for you by attending our annual club fair.  It will be held all week during both lunches. Clubs will be seated around the perimeter of the cafeteria waiting for you to come up and ask questions. Different clubs will be highlighted each day. Get involved and make a difference.

Need help

There is a lovely, young exchange student from China, attending CDO. There is a potential issue with her current host family, and they are not sure that her host family placement will work out.  At this point, they are looking for another host family who might be willing to serve as a back-up family in case we need to move her.

The family would need to provide a place for her to sleep (can be a shared room with a same gender sibling), a place for her to study and 3 meals a day.  Beyond that, we are looking for a family that can embrace her and support her during her time here.  The family would gain a wonderful "daughter" and an opportunity to broaden their cultural awareness and the satisfaction of being able to be a part of a wonderful experience for a young person far from home.

They appreciate the CDO community in welcoming this student and thank you for your support and assistance in helping to identify a back-up family for her.
