News from the Counseling Office
Week of September 29, 2014
It's College Week at CDO!
In celebration of the 18 colleges we have visiting CDO this week and to support our goal of promoting a college going culture on our campus, the counseling department is sponsoring College Week this week! So, tell your student to grab their favorite college gear and show off their college spirit every day! And, while they're in their college logo gear, tell them to come by the counseling office and visit the various college representatives that will be on campus throughout the week. Look for specifics about which colleges will be visiting below. It's never too early to start thinking about college, and these visits are for students of all grade levels! PSAT registration is going on now!!
The PSAT is both a practice SAT and the qualifying exam for the National Merit scholarship (when taken in the junior year). The PSAT is only offered once a year and CDO will be giving it on the Saturday test date, October 18 (it is also available in town on the Wednesday before at other schools). Both sophomores and juniors are encouraged to take the PSAT as it is good practice for sophomores and it is the National Merit qualifying exam for juniors. When students receive their scores back, they will also receive their test books and all of the answers to the questions, making this an excellent study tool for the SAT! Registration takes place in the bookstore and the cost of the exam is $25. We only receive a set number of exams and when they are sold out, that is it. Please do not delay...have your student register now!
Scholarship Spotlight:
The Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship is a $1,000 scholarship that is awarded to a full-time high school senior with a minimum 2.8 GPA, who has demonstrated leadership abilities and commitment to community service, and who plans to attend college in the U.S. CDO can select one student to nominate for this scholarship. If your student is interested in being CDO's nominee, please have him/her pick up a pre-application in the counseling office. Pre-applications are due back to the counseling office no later than October 24.
And, don't forget, you can find many more scholarship opportunities on our Scholarship Bulletin on our website (http://www.amphi.com/schools/cdo-high/counseling/financial-aid-and-scholarships.aspx; and click on "Scholarship Bulletin" on the right side). Scholarship opportunities are updated regularly!

 Congratulations CDO Boys Golf
CDO Boys Golf has reached the halfway point of their season leading their section and ranked third in the State with a 71-5 overall record. Dorado golfers Jonathan Walters and Chris Meyers have led the team ranked fifth and eighth in the state, respectively. The Boys Golf team is focused on improving for the final month of the season preparing for the state tournament on November 3-4 at Aguila Golf Course in the Phoenix area.
Congratulations to Chris Meyers, who on Sunday won the Nature Valley First Tee Open.

17-year-old's walk-off albatross to win pro-junior at Pebble Beach BY Golf News Net
This might be a first: a walk-off albatross.
High school senior Christopher Meyers stood 204 yards away from the hole at the iconic par-5 18th hole in the pro-junior competition of the Champions Tour's Nature Valley First Tee Open. Teaming with Lee Janzen, Meyers needed an eagle to win the tournament. With a 4-iron in his hand, he did one better, sinking the shot for a tournament-winning albatross.
This is a first. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Pebble Beach officials could not recall another albatross at the 18th hole in tournament play.
Making the albatross even more interesting is that Meyers' tee shot caromed off the rocks along the left side of the fairway, the barrier between the golf course and the ocean.
Meyers is Stanford-bound in the fall with a memory he'll never forget.

CDO Cross Country
On Sept. 3rd the Dorados Cross Country teams took part in the Northwest Showdown at Riverfront Park. The boys finished 3rd out of 8 teams. They were led by Tim Ronan who placed 2nd, covering the flat 3 mile course in 15:45. Jacob Bruno was 6th and Jacob Rischar was 9th, running 16:34 and 16:37 respectively. Unfortunately the girls were unable to field a full team for various reasons. However, Bridgette Doucet, one of the finest female high school distance runners in the state, outdistanced the field winning by almost 90 seconds in the time of 17:42. As a sophomore running cross country, Bridgette was the Section II champion and Division II state runner-up. In the Division II state track and field championships last year, Bridgette was the runner-up in both the 1600 meter run (5:01) and the 3200 meter run (10:40).
The teams then traveled to Chandler on Sept. 20th to take part in the 26th edition of the Ojo Rojo Invitational. The course was a flat, fast 5 kilometers in length. The boys finished 4th out of 19 teams. There were 129 boys and 102 girls competing in the varsity races. Medal winners were Tim Ronan (6th place--16:17), Jacob Bruno (17th place--17:19) and Jacob Rischar (25th place--17:33). Once again the girls were unable to field a full team due to illness and injury but still had some very good performances. Bridgette Doucet picked up a plaque for her 2nd place finish (18:15) with the Bruno sisters (Barbara and Katie) winning medals for their 16th and 26th place performances (20:58 and 21:35 respectively).

Numerous families attended the "Race to Nowhere" event at the Loft this weekend. Many were inspired to contact us and suggest that families watch the program, offered on PBS stations this upcoming week. Read more
Race to Nowhere: The Dark Side of America's Achievement Culture
"Race to Nowhere" is a film that calls us to challenge current thinking about how we prepare our children for success. Named by TakePart.com as one of "10 Education Documentaries You Don't Want to Miss", "Race to Nowhere" brings communities together to spark dialogue and galvanize change in America's schools. Featuring the heartbreaking stories of students across the country who have been pushed to the brink by over-scheduling, over-testing and the relentless pressure to achieve, "Race to Nowhere" points to a silent epidemic in our schools. Through the testimony of educators, parents and education experts, it reveals an education system in which cheating has become commonplace; students have become disengaged; stress-related illness, depression and burnout are rampant; and young people arrive at college and the workplace unprepared and uninspired. Shown nationwide and internationally in more than 7,000 schools, universities, cinemas, hospitals, corporations and community centers, "Race to Nowhere" has become the centerpiece of a nationwide, grassroots movement for the transformation of education.

- HEY DORADOS! This is a reminder that the dress code is still in effect. Ladies, your tops must have straps on the shoulders, no showing or exposed undergarments and your midriff, front and back, must be covered. Open or exposed backs on shirts are not allowed, either. Gentlemen, same for you: no exposed undergarments, no tank tops where the armpit hole extends to the waist, no exposed midriff and no images or language on shirts that violate the dress code. Dress code violators will be directed to Mrs. Henkel in Counseling where they will exchange their top for a CDO t-shirt. Keep it classy CDO.

Need help
There is a lovely, young exchange student from China, attending CDO. There is a potential issue with her current host family, and they are not sure that her host family placement will work out. At this point, they are looking for another host family who might be willing to serve as a back-up family in case we need to move her.
The family would need to provide a place for her to sleep (can be a shared room with a same gender sibling), a place for her to study and 3 meals a day. Beyond that, we are looking for a family that can embrace her and support her during her time here. The family would gain a wonderful "daughter" and an opportunity to broaden their cultural awareness and the satisfaction of being able to be a part of a wonderful experience for a young person far from home.
They appreciate the CDO community in welcoming this student and thank you for your support and assistance in helping to identify a back-up family for her.
