Counseling News

Pre-registration for 2014-2015

If your student was absent on the day that his/her English class met with the counselors to submit their course selections for the 2014-2015 school year and hasn't already turned in his/her course selections to the counseling office, please have your student do so immediately. Course requests are being tallied so that the master schedule can be created. If your student does not turn in his/her course selections, he/she will not receive a schedule for next year.

ECAP Reminder

As a reminder, an Education and Career Action Plan (ECAP) is a graduation requirement for all Arizona students. The Amphitheater district is using a combination of the internet based AzCIS program and a hardcopy "ECAP Plan" sheet, in addition to the many other ECAP supporting activities offered on a regular basis to students and parents (i.e. college fairs, evening presentations, classroom guidance lessons, resume writing, etc.), to help students meet this requirement. AzCIS allows CDO students full time access to exploring, creating, and researching their ECAP.

The CDO counseling department is working in partnership with classroom teachers to assist students in using this program throughout the school year as they develop their ECAP.  Students and parents are encouraged to log on to this system at any time and work together in developing a functional ECAP.

To access the AzCIS system, please visit www.azcis.intocareers.org and use the user name: canyondohs and password: 4azcis02. Students will then create their own accounts for future use.

The overall goal for the ECAP is to formulate a post high school career pathway.  Each student is expected to have a clear plan to either be prepared to directly enter the workforce, attend a junior college, trade school, technical school, university or enter the military.  Research shows that a well thought out post-high school plan offers a student an opportunity to meet with early success as they begin their journey toward a rewarding career.

Please ask to see your student's AzCIS portfolio and talk with them about their plan. Thanks!

Seniors who have been admitted to the University of Arizona...

SAT and ACT Registration

It is time for college bound juniors to start looking into registering for these exams. College bound juniors should take an SAT and/or ACT during the spring of their junior year. This allows plenty of time to retest early in the senior year if desired and still meet college application deadlines. Registration for the SAT occurs at http://sat.collegeboard.org and registration for the ACT occurs at www.actstudent.org. Please contact your students' counselor if you have any questions about either of these exams.

It's time to start thinking about what your student is going to do this summer!

There are many options available to high school students throughout the summer to improve their academic skills, investigate various career fields, experience college life, give back to their communities, and many other opportunities. We will be compiling a list of various summer opportunities and posting them on our website at http://sites.google.com/site/canyondelorocounseling (scroll down and click on "Summer Bulletin" on the lower left). Please check the list often as more opportunities will be added on a regular basis as they become available.

Help Academic Decathlon Go to Nationals
We need to raise more than $7500 to help pay for our trip.

The total cost of the trip will be around $20,000.

  • Each student is responsible for paying $500 of the costs.
  • Arizona Academic Decathlon is providing $4500 of the expenses.
  • We need to come up with the rest!
  • You can earn exciting perks, like postcards, highlighters, sweatshirts, and home-cooked dinners.
  • We are also having bake sales, car washes, and restaurant fundraisers. We're all working hard to achieve our goal!
The Academic Decathlon has a profound effect on the students involved in it.
  • Competing at a national competition will be a life-long memory for all the students.
  • Last year we finished second in our division and hope to be national champions in the medium division this year.
  • If we are successful, it will reflect very positively on the school and community.
