| Academic Decathlon- State Champs!! |
|
During an Academic Decathlon competition, the team score is determined by the answers to a total of 2,010 questions, as well as the scores from numerous speeches, interviews, and essays.
On Saturday, the Canyon del Oro High School Academic Decathlon team won the state championship by 20 points (out of a possible 60,000), which is equivalent to 1 of those 2,010 questions. Both teams were well ahead of third-place Mesa Mountain View.
Led by Maria Elena Pakulis, Rebecca Gosla, Caleb Yetman, and Michael Yuhas, the CDO Academic Decathlon team defeated up-and-coming Boulder Creek High School (from Anthem), by the narrowest of margins at the 2014 Arizona State Academic Decathlon Finals. Forty teams, and more than 330 students competed. Maria earned special honors as the top student in the Scholastic Division, as well as a trophy for her perfect score in the interview competition. Michael finished 3rd in the Scholastic Division, Caleb was 4th in the Varsity Division, and Rebecca was 6th in Honor Division. Earning individual medals were Maria, Rebecca, Nicole Enos, Michael and Caleb. Also competing were Jennifer Marine, Jennifer Baeza-Loya, Martin Ramirez, and Matt Welch. All nine of these students worked tremendously hard to earn this championship, and will represent Arizona at the nationals finals in Honolulu in late April.
This is the fourth time that CDO has won the state championship (2006, 2009, and 2011 were the previous years). We're the only team in Arizona that has finished in the top two in the state over all of the last nine year.

Visiting College Campuses
Spring Break is a fantastic time to visit colleges! As you begin to think about your spring break plans, consider including a visit to a college campus or two. It is never too early to begin visiting colleges, and it is an important part of the college decision making process. Websites and college mailings always have beautiful pictures in them, but they don't tell the whole story. It is important for students to have the chance to visit the campus(es) of the college(s) they are interested in attending before they make their final decision - and that includes the U of A. The U of A is about more than just the football stadium or basketball arena; the two parts of campus that most of our students have visited. It is important to visit campus during the week, during the day, so that students can get a real sense of what the campus is like. All colleges offer free campus tour programs; some are just an hour or two, and others are an all day event. You can register for these opportunities on the college website (usually under the "admissions" or "prospective students" links) and it is important to register ahead of time; don't just show up and expect to be shown around. Happy touring!
ECAP Reminder
As a reminder, an Education and Career Action Plan (ECAP) is a graduation requirement for all Arizona students. The Amphitheater district is using a combination of the internet based AzCIS program and a hardcopy "ECAP Plan" sheet, in addition to the many other ECAP supporting activities offered on a regular basis to students and parents (i.e. college fairs, evening presentations, classroom guidance lessons, resume writing, etc.), to help students meet this requirement. AzCIS allows CDO students full time access to exploring, creating, and researching their ECAP.
The CDO counseling department is working in partnership with classroom teachers to assist students in using this program throughout the school year as they develop their ECAP. Students and parents are encouraged to log on to this system at any time and work together in developing a functional ECAP.
To access the AzCIS system, please visit www.azcis.intocareers.org and use the user name: canyondohs and password: 4azcis02. Students will then create their own accounts for future use.
The overall goal for the ECAP is to formulate a post high school career pathway. Each student is expected to have a clear plan to either be prepared to directly enter the workforce, attend a junior college, trade school, technical school, university or enter the military. Research shows that a well thought out post-high school plan offers a student an opportunity to meet with early success as they begin their journey toward a rewarding career.
Please ask to see your student's AzCIS portfolio and talk with them about their plan. Thanks!
First Hour Contracts
Students who plan on taking a first hour class next year need to complete a First Hour Contract (which includes a parent signature) and return it to the Administration office no later than March 14. If your student has not picked up a First Hour Contract yet, it can be picked up in the counseling office. Please note: IB students will all have a first hour class and do NOT have to complete a First Hour Contract.
SAT and ACT Registration
It is time for college bound juniors to start looking into registering for these exams. College bound juniors should take an SAT and/or ACT during the spring of their junior year. This allows plenty of time to retest early in the senior year if desired and still meet college application deadlines. Registration for the SAT occurs at http://sat.collegeboard.org and registration for the ACT occurs at www.actstudent.org. Please contact your students' counselor if you have any questions about either of these exams.
It's time to start thinking about what your student is going to do this summer!
There are many options available to high school students throughout the summer to improve their academic skills, investigate various career fields, experience college life, give back to their communities, and many other opportunities. We will be compiling a list of various summer opportunities and posting them on our website at http://sites.google.com/site/canyondelorocounseling (scroll down and click on "Summer Bulletin" on the lower left). Please check the list often as more opportunities will be added on a regular basis as they become available.
Upcoming College Visits:
- Monday, March 10, 8:30 am - University of New Mexico
- Wednesday, March 12, 9:00 am - Pima Community College
- Friday, March 28, 9:00 am - University of Arizona

We wish you all a wonderful, relaxing Spring Break next week!
