Save the Date: College Planning Nights
The Counseling Department will be holding College Planning Night for Juniors (and their parents) at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, March 12 in the CDO Lecture Hall. Please come and learn more about the college application process, college entrance exams, financial aid, and scholarships!
A separate night will be held for IB Juniors (and their parents) on Tuesday, March 11 at 6:30 pm in the CDO Lecture Hall.
First Hour Contracts
Students who plan on taking a first hour class next year need to complete a First Hour Contract (which includes a parent signature) and return it to the Administration office no later than March 14. If your student has not picked up a First Hour Contract yet, it can be picked up in the counseling office. Please note: IB students will all have a first hour class and do NOT have to complete a First Hour Contract.
Some Information from the PCC Honors Program
The Honors Program at Pima Community College, Northwest Campus, is offering some great opportunities for high achieving students who plan on attending PCC after graduation! To be eligible for the program, students need to have an appropriate score on the placement tests and at least a 3.5 GPA in high school. Some benefits:
1. COURSES: This fall your students can take Honors Content (HC) courses in WRT, HIS, and BIO, as well as the Honors Colloquium (HON 101). The fall schedule at NW is: HON 101 MW 8:40-9:55, WRT 101HC MW 10:10-11:25, HIS 141HC (American History) TuTh 10:10-11:25, and BIO 100HC (Biology Concepts) Th 11:30-2:10. All of these courses meet AGEC requirements, which are necessary for transfer, as well as working towards the Honors Certificate.
2. SERVICE + LEADERSHIP: This fall the Honors Club will continue participating in year-long service projects with YOTO and the VA Hospital, as well as events with Ben's Bells, the Food Bank, and Earth Day. These commitments provide students with opportunities to be with other honors students, to help the college and community, and to gain important experience, which they will need when they apply for scholarships to four-year institutions.
3. CONNECTION: This coming year, the Honors Program will continue its membership in the Arizona State Honors Council (AZHC), where students can connect with the Honors Colleges at UA, ASU, and NAU. We will also continue our annual visits and information sessions with each. And we will continue to work closely with the UA Honors College, where many of our students opt to continue.
For more information about the Honors Program, please contact Dr. Ken Vorndran at kvorndran@pima.edu or 520-206-2162.
SAT and ACT Registration
It is time for college bound juniors to start looking into registering for these exams. College bound juniors should take an SAT and/or ACT during the spring of their junior year. This allows plenty of time to retest early in the senior year if desired and still meet college application deadlines. Registration for the SAT occurs at http://sat.collegeboard.org and registration for the ACT occurs at www.actstudent.org. Please contact your students' counselor if you have any questions about either of these exams.
It's time to start thinking about what your student is going to do this summer!
There are many options available to high school students throughout the summer to improve their academic skills, investigate various career fields, experience college life, give back to their communities, and many other opportunities. We will be compiling a list of various summer opportunities and posting them on our website at http://sites.google.com/site/canyondelorocounseling (scroll down and click on "Summer Bulletin" on the lower left). Please check the list often as more opportunities will be added on a regular basis as they become available. Many programs require an application and application deadlines begin as early as February for summer 2014.
Financial Aid Related Reminder
A friendly reminder to those seniors and parents who are hoping to qualify for the Obama Scholars Program (ASU; https://students.asu.edu/obama?301) or the Arizona Assurance program (U of A; https://financialaid.arizona.edu/assurance)...the deadline to have your completed application for admission and FAFSA submitted in order to qualify for either of these programs is March 1. No exceptions will be made!
