Counseling News

First Hour Contracts

Students who plan on taking a first hour class next year need to complete a First Hour Contract (which includes a parent signature) and return it to the Administration office no later than March 14. If your student has not picked up a First Hour Contract yet, it can be picked up in the counseling office. Please note: IB students will all have a first hour class and do NOT have to complete a First Hour Contract.

Pre-registration for classes for the 2014-2015 school year

Counselors have visited all of the 9-11th grade English classes and discussed pre-registration for the 2014-2015 school year. If your student was absent on the day that the counselor visited his class, please ensure that your student received the pre-registration paperwork he needs (extras were left with English teachers). If your student did not receive the necessary paperwork, please have him pick up paperwork in the counseling office.

Starting the first week of March, all 9-11th graders will meet with counselors in the computer lab (again, with their English class) so that they can enter their course requests directly into the computer. Prior to meeting in the lab, every student should have completed a hard copy of their course requests that should be reviewed with a parent (we ask for a parent signature on the form as well).

If you or your student has any questions about which classes should be taken next year, we encourage you/your student to come in and meet with the appropriate counselor for assistance.

A pre-registration note for parents of Pre-IB 9th graders

Please have your Pre-IB 9th graders review their course selections with Mrs. Barcanic prior to submitting their requests. It is important to ensure that they remain on-track for entering the IB program their junior year. Thank you!

SAT and ACT Registration

It is time for college bound juniors to start looking into registering for these exams. College bound juniors should take an SAT and/or ACT during the spring of their junior year. This allows plenty of time to retest early in the senior year if desired and still meet college application deadlines. Registration for the SAT occurs at http://sat.collegeboard.org and registration for the ACT occurs at www.actstudent.org. Please contact your students' counselor if you have any questions about either of these exams.

It's time to start thinking about what your student is going to do this summer!

There are many options available to high school students throughout the summer to improve their academic skills, investigate various career fields, experience college life, give back to their communities, and many other opportunities. We will be compiling a list of various summer opportunities and posting them on our website at http://sites.google.com/site/canyondelorocounseling (scroll down and click on "Summer Bulletin" on the lower left). Please check the list often as more opportunities will be added on a regular basis as they become available. Many programs require an application and application deadlines begin as early as February for summer 2014.

Financial Aid Related Reminder

A friendly reminder to those seniors and parents who are hoping to qualify for the Obama Scholars Program (ASU; https://students.asu.edu/obama?301) or the Arizona Assurance program (U of A; https://financialaid.arizona.edu/assurance)...the deadline to have your completed application for admission and FAFSA submitted in order to qualify for either of these programs is March 1. No exceptions will be made!

Don't Forget College Goal Sunday!

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2014-2015 academic year is available now! For students planning on enrolling in college for the upcoming year, the FAFSA is the first critical step in applying for federal/state grants, loans and scholarships. In order to receive maximum consideration for all available financial aid, especially free money, and to meet the priority filing deadlines of the Arizona public universities it is important for students to complete the FAFSA by March 1, 2014. The FAFSA can be completed at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

For families that need help completing the FAFSA, College Goal Sunday (CGS) is here to help! This year's College Goal Sunday and Saturday TOO events will take place on February 22ns and 23rd. At the event students and their families will receive help from over 400 financial aid professionals to complete the online FAFSA form and get help with other financial aid related questions. For more information about CGS, and to find the CGS sites in Tucson, please visit www.collegegoalsunday.com.

UofA/Circle K Teacher-of-the-Year Finalist

Dear CDO Community,

I am pleased to announce that Mrs. Jennifer Atteberry-Pierpont was recently selected as a finalist for the University of Arizona / Circle K Teacher of the Year Award.

Jennifer is a graduate of Canyon del Oro High School and the University of Arizona. She graduated from the U of A with a Bachelor's Degree in Family and Consumer Science Education in 2004. After graduation, Jennifer returned to CDO to be a teacher and she has worked here ever since.

Jennifer teaches four levels of Early Childhood Education, she serves as the Chairperson for our Career and Technical Education Department and she is the director of the Canyon del Oro Preschool.   The CTE Department and the Preschool have flourished under her leadership.

This past August, the Canyon del Oro Preschool Program received a 5-Star rating, the highest rating possible on the Quality First Rating Scale, in an evaluation of childcare facilities in the Tucson area. Jennifer is the driving force behind this program. Her leadership is clearly responsible for the success of our high school students in Early Childhood Education and the overall success of the preschool program.

Jennifer is also involved in a number of other valuable leadership responsibilities. She is a Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America Advisor. She has served the Pima County JTED as a Curriculum Writer and Consultant for Early Childhood Education classes. And she has been the Lead Teacher for the CTE Summer Institute.

Jennifer will be recognized during halftime of the University of Arizona basketball game against California on February 26th and during a reception dinner at the Jim Click Hall of Champions in McKale Center on February 28th.

Congratulations to Jennifer Atteberry-Pierpont!

Mr. Paul DeWeerdt

Principal

Adopting CDO's Own

During the month of February, the CDO Sign Language Club will again be conducting their service project called: "Adopting CDO's Own."

Students place boxes all around the campus and gather items to send to CDO grads and other members of the CDO family who are in the military serving overseas. We will also be working on fundraising to garner the funds necessary to pay for the shipping. The Club chose to do their service project in February so that those who are so far from home know that they are in our thoughts throughout the year; not just during the major holiday season. Neala Sillman, Sign Language Teacher is coordinating.
