A huge thanks to all the faculty, staff and parents that volunteered on Friday at the CDO Academic Decathlon Scrimmage. Things went very smoothly and we successfully evaluated the Speech, Interview and Essay skills of roughly 120 students from 11 different teams. Although the team from Texas won overwhelmingly, CDO students did quite well. Rebecca Gosla had the highest overall score of all CDO students, and won a special award for having the best essay. Maria Elena Pakulis placed 4th in her division. Caleb Yetman earned awards in all ten events and placed 4th in his category. Martin Ramirez placed 5th in his category. Also scoring well were Jennifer Marine, Nicole Enos, Sarah Spurlin, Michael Yuhas, and Matt Welch. Jennifer Baeza-Loya, Zach Azares, and Luisa Placencia had strong performances, too. Krista Kane deserves a special shout-out for being the top freshman at the competition.
CDO's score places them as number 1 among all schools in Arizona, so far, well ahead of our rivals from the Mesa School District. We will definitely be in the hunt for the state championship in March!

The CDO Library is holding a drawing for an iPad Mini during the month of December. Any student who checks out a book can put his or her name in the box. We are allowing one entry per student each day, all they have to do is check out a book. The iPad Mini will be handed to the winner of the drawing before we start the holiday break. Please encourage your CDO student to participate.
Other library news. We now have our wonderful tutor volunteer, Mr. Dave Chatterton, back on duty. Dave is here Monday and Tuesday evenings and is a very helpful tutor. He is a retired chemical engineer who offers very good help for math, physics and chemistry. Wednesday and Thursday evenings find tutor Loren Seng, retired math teacher from CDO, hard at work and very helpful. Evening tutoring takes place at the CDO Library Monday - Thursday evenings from 3:45 - 4:45 PM. This is an excellent service to get ahead or learn outside of the classroom, especially for math. Evening tutoring at CDO is funded by the Pima County Public Libraries. Call CDO Library at 696-5770 for any additional information you want on the evening tutoring program.

Note to parents of seniors: If your students fails a class this semester that is required for graduation, please have your senior meet with his/her counselor immediately upon returning from winter break to discuss altering his/her graduation plan.
A friendly reminder to seniors: As we enter the holiday season, we would like to remind you that your teachers and counselors are off the same days that you are. If you are in need of letters of recommendation, please plan accordingly so that they can be completed for you on time. Letters that are due on January 1, should be requested at least 2 weeks prior to the end of the semester. Letters requested on the last day of the semester will not be able to be completed in time for a January 1 deadline as many teachers and counselors travel during the winter break and will not be able to access their computers and/or the internet for you.
Parents of seniors, mark your calendar...College Goal Sunday & Saturday TOO! is coming in February
College Goal Sunday & Saturday TOO! is a statewide initiative for students and their family to get free, on-site professional assistance completing the FAFSA, the critical first step in paying for college. College Goal Sunday & Saturday TOO will be held on Saturday, February 22 and Sunday, February 23, 2014. Specific site and time information hasn't been released yet for the 2014 event, but as the event gets closer we will post specifics here or you can visit www.collegegoalsunday.com.
A note about 2nd semester schedule changes:
Although most CDO classes are year-long classes and schedule changes are not needed at the semester break, occasionally a student may require a change in his/her schedule at semester. If this is the case for your student, please have him/her visit the counselor prior to winter break to have the change processed. Students only have 5 days into 2nd semester to make any necessary changes and, due to the high volume of traffic in the counseling office at the start of the semester, it is best to make these changes prior to the break when possible and avoid the long lines that form after break.
Upcoming College Visits:
December 11, 9:00 am - Pima Community College
