A Note from Our Principal

Dear Parents,

Now that the school year is well underway, I would like to ask you to help me with one of the more important areas where you can support and impact the future of Canyon del Oro High School.

Arizona allows all taxpayers to make contributions to public schools to receive a tax credit. Anyone who pays taxes to the State of Arizona is eligible to receive a credit up to $200 ($400 for married couples who file a joint return). For example, if an individual owes the State of Arizona $300 in taxes, you can actually make a contribution to Canyon del Oro for $200, take the credit on your taxes, and reduce your tax bill to $100. It is a dollar for dollar credit. It's like paying part or all of your state taxes directly to the school of your choice.

Fees paid by families for their student to participate in extracurricular activities are already eligible for this credit up to the established limits. However, what many people do not realize or understand is that you do not need to have a child at Canyon del Oro in order to take advantage of this tax credit. ANYONE who would like to support our school can participate by making a contribution! So ask your friends, your co-workers, and your relatives to make a contribution to CDO.

There are two ways to make a contribution. Contributions can be made directly to school through our bookstore or you can make a contribution online. You can select the program that you would like to support with your contribution or you can allow the school to decide where to best use your contribution. The CDO Site Council determines the uses of undesignated tax credit funds. We have recently used these funds to support such activities as travel for students participating in state and national competitions and for items such as new Marching Band uniforms.

Please consider making a contribution and please help me spread the word about this amazing opportunity.   For more information regarding the Arizona School Tax Credit and for printable forms, please use the following links: http://www.amphi.com/district/amphi-community/tax-credit-info.aspx AND

This week's hot topic: Letters of Recommendation

Many students, seniors in particular, will find that they need a letter of recommendation to support their application to college, for a scholarship, or for a summer program. Below, we offer your student tips for securing quality letters of recommendation:

  • Once you know that you will need a letter of recommendation, fill out a "Letter of Recommendation Request" form (these are located in the Counseling office or on the counseling website at http://sites.google.com/site/canyondelorocounseling/letter-of-recommendation). It is important that you fill this form out honestly and completely. Once you have completed the form you can make an appointment with your counselor or teacher to submit it.
  • Give recommender at least 2 weeks notice (more is preferred). It takes a lot of time for someone to write you a good quality letter (and, remember, that the individual you asked to write the letter also has a full-time teaching/counseling job). Letters written on last minute notice can be detrimental to your application.
  • Provide the recommender with deadlines for each recommendation so that there is no confusion as to when the letter is due. This also helps your recommender organize his or her time appropriately.
  • On the application form, we suggest that you waive your right to view recommendation letters. This gives more credibility to the recommendation in the eyes of the college.
  • Ask your recommender in person to write your letter - not by email, not by just dropping off the form, and not by phone. This is especially important now that more and more applications are going online and students have the opportunity to just input their recommenders name and email address, and then the recommendation form is sent directly via email. Students need to let the recommender know that this email is coming (before the recommender receives it).
  • Provide recommender with addressed, stamped envelopes if letters are to be mailed.
  • Who to ask? Check first to see what the college/scholarship committee is requesting. They will often be specific about who they want to see letters from (i.e. 1 counselor, 1 academic teacher, 1 additional). Ask the people who know you best!
  • How many to submit? Again, check first to see how many are required. Follow the wishes of the college/scholarship; do not inundate them with more than they ask for (1 extra is sometimes ok, but not 2 or more).
  • Thank the recommender after the letter is completed (hand written thank you's are very nice).
  • Follow-up with the recommender and let him/her know the outcome of your application (did you get accepted to the college, did you get the scholarship?).

Upcoming Visits:

  • September 25, 12:30 pm - California Lutheran University
  • October 4, 9:00 am - University of Redlands

  • October 10, 8:30 am - University of San Diego
  • October 11, 11:00 am - Gonzaga University

These events will both take place in the CDO Lecture Hall.

On a related note, the counselors will begin their fall classroom guidance lessons this week. During these lessons we will be meeting with all grade level students through their English classes to work on their ECAP, discuss graduation requirements, review to ensure they are on track for graduation, discuss college entrance requirements, and engage in 4-10 year planning.

A Note to Parents of Seniors

The University of Arizona has changed their admission policy slightly for this year, offering "Wildcat Promise I" and "Wildcat Promise II" deadlines before switching back to their traditional "Rolling Admissions" policy. This means that students who have a completed application (application, transcript, and fee) on file by October 1 will receive an admissions decision on November 1. Students who have a completed application on file by November 1 will receive an admissions decision on December 1. After November 1, the U of A will revert back to rolling admissions (students will receive an admissions decision approximately 6-8 weeks after completing their application in its entirety).

 PSAT
STUDENTS INTERESTED IN TAKING THE PSAT AT CDO will have only one opportunity to do so this year.  The PSAT is an exam that determines National Merit eligibility when taken in the junior year as well as other college scholarship opportunities.  It is also a much shorter version of the SAT and can serve as a great practice for students getting ready to take the SAT this year or next year.  The PSAT will be given on Saturday, October 19, at 7:30 a.m.  To register for the exam please stop in the bookstore to pay the $25.00 registration fee.  You will then receive your practice booklet and registration ticket.  This is a FIRST COME FIRST SERVE registration.  Once we sell out of tickets, we will not be getting any more. On October 7, we will open registration to other schools.  Please register as soon as possible to guarantee your spot.  Again, this test is only offered ONCE A YEAR!  If you have any questions, please see Ms. Baker in the Administration Office.
