Although we have wrapped up the drop/add period, it is still possible for a student to change the level of his/her class if necessary (assuming that there is space available in the desired new class). Students have the first five weeks of the first semester to complete level changes (i.e. moving from Pre-AP English 9 to regular English 9). It is not, however, recommended that level changes be the first line of defense when a student is struggling in a class; students should first talk with the teacher about their struggles, request additional assistance, and attend tutorial on a regular basis. Level changes require teacher approval and will be considered only if the following conditions have been met:
- The student is making a sincere effort to do the work in the class
- The student is regularly making contact with the teacher in the classroom and during tutorial periods to ask questions
- The student and parents have worked with the teacher to understand the scope and nature of the problems causing difficulties
- The student and parents have consulted with the counselor so that the counselor can offer general support and can talk to the teacher with the student
Parents of seniors: If your student is considering attending a four-year university immediately after high school and he/she has not yet taken the SAT or ACT, it is imperative that they sign up for one, or both, ASAP! The next SAT will be given on October 5 and students must register by September 6 in order to avoid late fees. To register for the SAT, please have your student visit www.collegeboard.org/sat. The next ACT will be given on September 21, but students must pay a late fee to register for that testing session if they haven't already registered. The ACT will be given again on October 26 and students must register by September 27 to avoid late fees. To register for the ACT, please visit www.actstudent.org.
We are excited to announce that we will have a full schedule of colleges visiting CDO again this year! All students, regardless of grade level, are welcome to attend these visits to learn more about the specific colleges. The visit schedule is posted on the counseling calendar (https://sites.google.com/site/canyondelorocounseling/home) and announcements about the visits are made in the daily announcements. Students are asked to come in to the counseling office a few days prior to a visit they are interested in attending to pick up a permission slip. All visits occur in the counseling career room. Coming up in September we have scheduled so far:
Sept. 9, 8:30 am - University of Southern California
Sept. 10, 10:30 am - Fall College Fair (in the South Gym)
Sept. 11, 9:00 am - Pima Community College
Sept. 16, 9:30 am- Grand Canyon University (Phoenix, Arizona)
Sept. 19, 11:15 am - Washington University in St. Louis
Sept. 25, 12:30 pm - California Lutheran University
Please watch the counseling calendar, as more visits are being scheduled daily. In addition, the fourth week in October is a very full week for visits as many colleges will be in town for the Tucson College Night on October 22.

CDO will be hosting our annual Fall College Fair on Tuesday, September 10 from 10:30-11:30 in the South Gym. New for this year: the colleges would like you to register online ahead of time at www.gotocollegefairs.com. Doing so will allow you to fill out your information once instead of multiple times on paper at each college's table. Please see the attached flyer for more information.
