What's new?
We've wrapped up our work on the Zoo Interchange Project in Milwaukee County to support the Wisconsin Department of Transportation's efforts to expand the highway. We relocated seven overhead 138,000-volt lines, erected nearly 60 new monopoles to replace lattice structures and strung a little more than 11 miles of new wires in the area along the intersections of I-94, I-894 and Highway 45. Highway travelers watched the transformation during the year and a half that the project was underway - installing new poles and stringing wires across six lanes of traffic while the highways were kept open.

Real estate and tree clearing activities are underway along the 58-mile corridor of our Holmes-Old Mead Road 138-kV transmission line project in Menominee and Delta counties in Michigan. Easement acquisition is more than 60 percent complete, thanks in large part to securing an easement from the state of Michigan along 20 miles of an abandoned railroad corridor. After the transmission project is complete, ATC will build a recreational trail in that portion of the right-of-way. Construction of the $120 million project will begin in January 2015, and the projected in-service date is summer 2016.

The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin will hold a series of public hearings on the Badger Coulee Project, our joint effort with Xcel Energy to build a Multi-Value Project approved by the Midcontinent Independent System Operator in 2011. To view the dates, times and locations, click here

If you think you have it bad in below-freezing weather, pity the poor wood frog. This type of frog is commonly found in woodland ponds and wooded wetlands in both Michigan and Wisconsin. The frogs literally freeze in the winter, but come back to life in spring for a brief mating season. Its organs stay warm enough to sustain life because of a blood sugar that acts as an antifreeze. ATC in the community
Employees in each of our offices are getting into the generosity of the season by sponsoring an array of charitable activities. Pewaukee employees are conducting a food drive for Feeding America and gathering items for the Marine Corps annual Toys for Tots campaign. Madison employees enjoyed a fundraiser lunch and friendly competition among the three wings of the building for the Share Your Holidays food drive. They'll also be shopping for children's wishlist items for Domestic Abuse Intervention Services. Cottage Grove employees also are participating in the Share Your Holidays food drive. A Salvation Army Adopt-a-Family will be recipients of gifts gathered by De Pere employees, and residents of The Caring House domestic violence shelter will be the beneficiaries of good will from employees in our Kingsford, Mich., office.

In Madison's Olin Park, we're sponsoring the Holiday Fantasy in Lights. Young and old can enjoy a drive through the park to see magical light displays from dusk until dawn throughout the holiday season.

We also are proud to participate once again in Downtown Green Bay Inc.'s holiday parade, sponsoring the SingSations group from Green Bay Public Schools.

More home fires occur on December 24 and 25 than on any other days of the year, and the leading cause for these fires is cooking, followed by heating. Two things to remember to keep your home safe this holiday season while cooking: stand by your pan while cooking to prevent a fire, and put a lid on it if a fire should start. Do not leave your cooking unattended; if you are baking, use a timer and stay nearby.

Have your furnace and chimney inspected by professionals and remember to keep space heaters at least three feet away from anything that might burn - curtains, upholstery or holiday decorations. If you are burning wood, dispose of ashes in a lidded metal container outside the home; a single ember can stay hot and undetected for days.
