Road Impact Fees Waived
SL Sunset

Businesses considering Cape Coral as their location now have another reason to choose the city. City Council has suspended road impact fees for businesses moving into existing buildings. That means if a business with a higher-impact use moves into an existing building, it is not charged an added road impact fee. Cost savings for businesses could be significant.

The Cape Coral Economic Development Office (EDO) and local business groups strongly supported this waiver program.

Cape Coral's road impact fee incentive program is effective through March 2015.

Remembering

& Honoring

Our Veterans

American Flag

The recent holiday and special events honoring our nation's veterans is a very welcome reminder to all of us just how important all veterans are to the local community and our entire nation.

The Cape Coral Economic Development Office sincerely extends our humble appreciation and thanks to everyone who is currently serving or has served our country in any of our military services. Military service represents a self-sacrificing commitment to support and uphold all that we hold dear as a nation.

We hope our readers will take the time to thank veterans and their families for their service to our country and our local communities. Let's honor those who serve as they honored us with their service.

In Florida, many of our veterans elect to become entrepreneurs.  This article offers further insights.

Small Business Saturday Coming Soon!

Cape Coral Mid Cape Corporate Center

If you support local businesses, the Saturday following Black Friday could be an ideal time to shop.
American Express began "Small Business Saturday" as a campaign in 2010, encouraging consumers to shop small on this day.   Since then, the White House, Small Business Administration and hundreds of corporations and community groups have joined the effort, hoping to give local, brick-and-mortar merchants a larger share of sales during the busiest shopping weekend of the year.

Message From Your EDO Director

Dana at Catch The VisionCatch The Vision 2013-

A Picnic in the Park

I had the pleasure of being a presenter at Catch the Vision 2013 held last week at Cape Christian Fellowship Church. It was a very inspiring event that was punctuated with a number of highlights and reasons for being excited about what Cape Coral's future holds.

Numerous real estate developments were discussed and important data were shared showing how our values are increasing, more jobs are available and, most importantly, how we're positioning Cape Coral for future growth. The audience was very supportive and excited to hear from the various presenters about their plans to build and grow in the Cape.

Events and opportunities such as Catch the Vision can be used as a springboard for our future in embracing the growth needed to bring top-quality developments to Cape Coral. I'd like to take the time to thank Gloria Raso Tate and her team for putting this wonderful event together and look forward to participating again next year.

Now it's incumbent upon all of us to support our local businesses and their growth, as well as welcoming new businesses to Cape Coral, as we develop our tax base and create a healthy community in which to live and work. Be part of the solution, Cape Coral. We've got this.

Sincerely,

Dana Brunett

Sam's Club Opening Here in 2014

8th Largest National Retailer

Sam's ClubCape Coral's growing economy will be getting another boost when construction begins on the newest Sam's Club in Southwest Florida. Behind-the-scenes work has already begun and physical site work will begin early next year, with a projected completion of November 2014.

This 140,000-square-foot facility will significantly add to the commercial landscape of the Pine Island Road Corridor and undoubtedly draw additional investment and development interest to the area. The new Sam's Club will be built at the bustling intersection of Hancock Bridge Parkway and Pine Island Road.

Sam's Club ranks as the 8th largest retail operation nationally, and the economic growth and stimulation it will bring is exciting news. Here's a snapshot of its benefits:

  • The wholesale club is expected to hire 200-plus employees.
  • The construction of the Sam's Club, and nearby properties that are likely to follow suit, will stimulate the local trades industry.
  • The popular wholesale club will provide more shopping choices for residents and halt some of the leakage of economic dollars out of Cape Coral.
  • Many local small businesses can shop for supplies without leaving the city, which helps these businesses keep their cost of doing business low.
  • The vacant land for the site is assessed at $2.3 million. Based on the value of other regional Sam's Club stores, the assessed value of the property after it's developed is estimated to be $10 million-a significant increase in taxable value.
  • Retail operations create jobs and taxes that improve the economy and help spread the cost of living here to more people.

The Cape Coral EDO looks forward to this stimulating addition to the city.  So please join us in spreading the news!

Cape Coral Veterinarian Wins Coveted Blue Chip Award

East West VeterinarianThe East West Veterinary Clinic is this year's winner of the 19th Annual Southwest Florida Blue Chip Community Business Award. Sponsored by BB&T-Oswalde Trippe and Company, the annual event featured five finalists from throughout Southwest Florida.

The strongest requirement for being considered for the Blue Chip Award is a company's demonstration of overcoming major adversity to achieve success in the business world.  Candidates for the award must also have been in business for at least three years in Lee, Collier or Charlotte counties, and employ 5 to 400 people.

Dr. Dixie Brown started the East West Veterinary Clinic at the peak of the crash of the local economy. Located on Del Prado Boulevard, the clinic has continued to grow, from its start with Dr. Brown and one part-time employee to its current 15-member staff. Additionally, Dr. Brown will soon be opening a brand-new clinic near the original site and will add an additional 5-7 more employees to the business.

According to Dr. Brown, the success of the business can be attributed to hiring great people, inspiring them to treat their clients with first-class service, having a caring attitude toward each client and their pet, and offering the best in veterinary medicine. Without a doubt, something must be different about this operation in order to achieve such a coveted award.

Only one Southwest Florida business receives the award each year. The Cape Coral Economic Development Office wants to heartedly congratulate Dr. Dixie Brown and all her staff for earning this year's award and for inspiring other local businesses to create the type of environment that grows the economy and helps strengthen this great City.

Corporate Learning Services Comes Home to the Cape

Manaya LearningAs a global business with a significant virtual component and network of talent spread throughout the world, Guido and Susan Minaya could anchor the headquarters of their Minaya Learning anywhere in the United States. They were located in California but relocated to Cape Coral in April-and have been completely happy with the move.

For one thing, it brought them to closer to their East Coast clients stretching from Boston to Miami, with easy access to their international customers. They use Southwest Florida International Airport for domestic flights, and book out of Miami and Tampa for international departures. They also favored Florida's low tax rates.

"We have extended team members in different part of the world:  Asia, Europe, and Latin America. Much of our services are virtual, so with a good internet provider, we can run it from most anywhere," says Managing Partner and CEO Dr. Guido Minaya.

Another deciding factor in relocating their business was family. The Minayas lived in Cape Coral in 1989 and had their children here. They have returned to be close to both sets of aging parents while running their global business. "For us, it's like coming home," says Susan. "It's a very different town now and we've really experienced how much it's grown," adds Guido.

Through their company, the Minayas run Corporate Learning Services, which provides corporate learning and development services to regional and Fortune 500 companies. The husband-and-wife duo are proud to note that theirs is a minority and woman-owned company, and is working to become certified on the national level.

The Minayas say they have made great networking connections at the Fourth Wednesday Chats, and are planning to connect with other regional partners of the Cape Coral Economic Development Office. Corporate Learning Services typically works with corporations with 10,000+ employees, and the company is likely to be viewed as an asset to corporate site selectors.

"The opportunities Southwest Florida offers to larger firms is going to be demonstrated more and more as years go along," Guido says. "The kind of service we offer, we add a nice element to what the area can offer the companies that will be coming and we look forward to that."

Expand Your Business...

Internationally!

New SBDCAs we approach the end of 2013, many small business owners are probably wondering, what might transpire during the upcoming year of business. Given the uncertainty of our economy, governmental changes to health care, and an overall lack of consumer confidence, businesses are constantly being challenged. This unstable environment can create cash flow pressure for businesses and hinder growth opportunities. To make matters worse, banks have tightened lending requirements which have limited small business owners' access to capital. Where else can businesses look for revenue?

One solution is to diversify and expand your revenue stream by exporting to international markets. With more than 96% of the global population living outside the United States, there are bountiful opportunities for all types of companies. More than 98% of exporters in the U.S. are small companies and many are taking advantage of having an electronic storefront. U.S. products still represent quality and a competitive advantage for companies overseas. Our government has placed an emphasis on export and wants to see export revenues double from $2.2 trillion to $4 trillion-plus by 2015. It's expected that this overseas growth revenue will support 2 million new jobs. The federal government also has rolled out an aggressive exporting plan called the National Export Initiative. Multiple agencies are involved in the initiative, including: Small Business Administration, Department of Commerce, U.S. Commercial Service, U.S. Export Assistance Center, Small Business Development Center, EX-IM bank and others. Through this level of combined support and expertise, companies with marketable/exportable goods should take advantage of this opportunity. The SBDC offers no-cost consulting services that will assess your company's export readiness, assist with marketing plans, and connect you with capital, if needed.

If you are considering pursuing international opportunities, please contact me for a no-cost consultation. Our services are free of charge and funded by the U.S. Small Business Administration and Florida Gulf Coast University.
