Sixth Grade Practices Typing Skills
Our 6th grade students created typing accounts last month which they will be using throughout the rest of the year. The goal is to move away from slow pecking of keys and into a more concentrated version of typing. This of course will be something they continue to practice over the next couple of years. The site Joel Kuschner has chosen has great tutorials as well as skilled games to test their knowledge. It can found at www.typingweb.com

Budding Ornithologists
Our first graders have been discovering the world of birds and working their way to becoming actual citizen scientists! They started an ornithology unit in late November which began with a visit from Wildcare in which they were exposed to many taxidermied birds so that they could look at them up close and compare adaptations. They then learned about several keys to identifying birds and learned about birds commonly found in the Sonoma Valley. We teamed up with Tom Rusert of Sonoma Birding who provided us with a class set of binoculars for a mini binocular boot camp. Mr. Rusert then led us on a birding trip to the Sonoma Plaza. The children were able to see ten different species in just under an hour!

Before the holiday break, the first graders made pine cone bird feeders in preparation for Project Feeder Watch and the Great Backyard Birdcount. We will actually submit important data as citizen scientists, for these projects which are organized by Cornell University's Lab of Ornithology. Several students also participated in the Christmas Bird Count for Kids.

Science Olympiad Starts Soon
Every year, Presentation fields a Science Olympiad team of fourth, fifth and sixth graders who meet after school on Thursdays in the winter to prepare for a fun competition in Santa Rosa at the end of the winter. This year, Gayle Gallagher, Joel Kuschner and Jamie Mitchell will be coaching the team. Information sheets went home last week and all interested students are invited to the first meeting on January 23 in the Science Room after school.
For the past 30 years, Science Olympiad has led a revolution in science education. What began as a grassroots assembly of science teachers is now one of the premiere science competitions in the nation, providing rigorous, standards-based challenges to nearly 7,000 teams in 50 states. Science Olympiad's ever-changing line-up of events in all STEM disciplines exposes students to practicing scientists and career choices, and energizes classroom teachers with a dynamic content experience.
