Presentation Speaker Series Welcomes Internationally-Renowned Arts Educator Eric Booth
December 10 from 6-8 pm

As parents, we hope to raise our children to become successful in work and life. In this century, two sets of skills frequently mentioned as necessary to achieve such goals include intrinsic motivation and creative thinking.

Our next speaker, Eric Booth, will offer his perspective on:
  • What do learning environments that promote curiosity and creative thinking look like
  • How to nurture essential skills of creative engagement, such as flexible thinking, empathy, brainstorming, inquiry and multi-sensory learning
  • What we can learn from arts education about fostering intrinsic motivation and creativity
  • Why creative engagement and intrinsic motivation are key to flourishing in life and work
You will leave this presentation with a greater understanding of how to guide your children in growing into self-motivated and creative learners as well as how to pursue this path in your own personal and professional life. Register for this free talk HERE.

Note:  There is an additional opportunity to hear Eric Booth in Sonoma.  Booth will present: "A Vision for Sonoma: The community development possibilities of El Sistema" at the Sebastiani Theatre on Monday, December 9 at 6pm. Mr. Booth will discuss the potential of El Sistema in Sonoma and the vision for a community network of youth orchestras. The night will conclude with a brief performance by the Valley Vibes Orchestras, an El Sistema program at El Verano Elementary. All are invited! No registration required.

Eric Booth has written five books and dozens of articles on arts and creative learning. Learn more at www.ericbooth.net

Kinders Experience Voting
Pumpkin Pie for 4 More Years!

Blog Post from Sofie:

We voted for Thanksgiving food. The winner was pumpkin pie! We got to make our own id cards to show at the door. We keep our vote a secret. We got together with the 1st and 2nd grade and counted all the numbers (votes) that people had. We saw the most, smallest and middle. We got cookies and watched election Charlie Brown. It is important to vote when you are a grown up so that you can help with what should happen.
Halloween Art Contest
Every year, Wendy Brayton runs a  Halloween art contest. Grade level winners are announced on the art room door.

Students worked as groups or individually on their pieces and the participation was optional. Winners picked prizes from the prize box.  We had some fabulous entries this year. Morgan from 6th grade did a great drawing and Sophia and Mackenzie spent three days making a spectacular cake. The art room offers three contests per year.  The  second one, a Charlie Brown poster contest, will take place in January.

Algebra Students Create Function Machines

The 7th and 8th grade students in Natalie Dusak's algebra class last week designed function machines.  The students have been working on Inverse Variation and Inductive and Deductive Reasoning and the machines were a visual way to showcase their understanding of the concepts.
Presentation Students Shine in Climbing Comp

Earlier this month, at the 2013 Harvest Crush-A-Thon, Presentation students Sterling McDonald, Riley Robles and Parker Temkin all competed, climbed extremely hard and represented Somoma very well! According to coach Taylor Knott, the students have shown marked improvement since the beginning of the season. Congratulations to Parker Temkin, who placed 2nd in the men's beginner category!
Presentation Logo Wear Is

Opportunity to Help Typhoon Victims in the Philippines -- Deadline THIS Monday

A local Sonoma family with extensive family and friends in the Philippines, has set up a center for relief goods to be sent directly to Tacloban City, the hardest hit area by typhoon Haiyan in Philippines. A cousin of the family is the director of surgery at Bethany Hospital in Tacloban City, and will be the Philippine contact and conduit for the relief items which we will be sending.

What is most needed is food. If you would like to give in-kind donations, we kindly request rice, canned sardines, canned tuna and canned soup. These can be easily packed in boxes and shipped. Of course a cash donation to the various major relief organizations is also urged. This is a wonderful way to talk to your children about giving and helping out those less fortunate as we approach the holidays for this heart wrenching catastrophe. This will be a long road to recovery. A box for donations will be in front of the school. Deadline is THIS Monday 11/18.

Please bring your items to the school by Monday and we will make a community donation directly to the local Sonoma family to facilitate. Please Contact Laura Juhasz for more information: laura@auteurwines.com
Presentation Students Wow in Wizard of Oz
Several grades took field trips last week to see their classmates perform in Broadway Bound Kids' production of "The Wizard of Oz" (our 7th grade from the audience and Presentation cast members are pictured above after the show).

Presentation students were cast in every leading role of the production including: Ella Freudenberger (class of '12) was Dorothy. 7th grader Tessa Freudenberger was the Wicked Witch of the West, sharing the part with 8th grader Aria Schuler. 7th grader Nell Sheridan was cast as Glinda the Good Witch, 8th grader Megan James was the Tin Man and 7th grader Hanna Rosa McNeely played the Scarecrow!  Many other Presentation students also had great roles in the production.

Next up for BBK is "The Sound of Music"!  Rehearsals start in January and the production will be in early May.
Leave a Legacy of Your Child's Time At The Presentation School

Presentation is again offering the opportunity for parents to purchase a brick to be laid onto the campus plaza in front of the Activity Center.  These bricks are $125 each and can hold up to three lines of text.  Stop by this week to see examples of how you can leave a lasting legacy for your child on our campus for years to come.  Order forms are available in the library. Consider surprising your student with the gift of the brick they can walk by every day!
St. Leo's Food Drive Ends This Week

Each class has been asked to donate items that would provide a complete Thanksgiving meal for a family in need.  Items include: gift card for a turkey, potatoes, onions, stuffing mix, cranberry sauce, canned vegetables, coffee/tea, rolls, canned fruit and cookies.  Please sign up in your classrooms.  All items will be picked up on Friday, Nov. 22.
