SPRING MUSICAL AUDITIONS UNDERWAY

We are thrilled to have Florente "Flo" Galvez (currently teaching a Perks acting class) directing the Spring Musical, "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown!"

The entire school will participate in the musical, and our music classes will focus their attention on all kinds of musical support, including opportunities for our instrumental music students.

Auditions for roles in the play will be open to all interested 6-8 grade studentson Nov 5th and 6th from 3:30-4:30pm.  Middle School students interested in the technical side of the theater (working back-stage or with the sound and lighting) are valuable and needed too.

This year, we are trying something new.  Middle School students who are selected for roles in the musical will sign up for "Spring Musical" as their 2nd trimester elective.  This will give the actors more focused time to work on the play, while cutting down on after-school time committed to the musical.  Please contact Mr. Parker if you have questions or concerns.

PLEASE NOTE: Halloween -- October 31 -- is a minimum day.  If you need after-school care in the afternoon please let Laura Wallace know a week in advance. After-school care will end at 4:30pm on Halloween.
November Lunch Orders Now Open!

Please go online to order your child's lunches for the month of November:  HERE.  There will also be a special Halloween dessert served this Wednesday.  All orders for that dessert must be placed by Noon on Tuesday.
6th Graders Are "Digging" Archeology Unit
Our 6th grade has begun their study of ancient pasts with the unit Dig It!  The students have become archaeologists and are studying the Stone Age.  They have learned about the development of man and are currently learning the three eras: Paleolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic. In addition to the fun of getting their hands dirty, the students will study and report on the distinct advances in language, culture and technology in each era.

5th Graders Participate in NASA Program

Our 5th graders have begun a unit on the Solar System. This year, they are participating in the Sally Ride EarthKAM program run by NASA.
Our 5th graders logged into the EarthKAM website and worked with an interactive map that tracked the orbit of the International Space Station to select areas of the earth to photograph from space. Once a location was found, the coordinates and corresponding Greenwich Mean Time were entered into an orbit request. Next, the files were uploaded to the International Space Station digital camera and the photo was taken from space. The first few images were of cloud cover, but this image, taken by the students, is of the Snake River in Oregon. More images are currently being processed and a slideshow will be available soon.
Middle School Dance A Hit

Our first middle school dance of the year, FALLing for You, was a big hit with more than 75 tweens and teens shaking it on the Activity Center dance floor.  A big thanks to Student Council for organizing and decorating the dance, to our chaperones and to graduate Devin Salmonsen (class of 2012) for serving as the DJ. Pictured above is most of our 7th grade class, just after the dance ended.
Fire Truck Comes to Campus

Last week were we lucky enough to have Schell-Vista firefighters come to talk to our primary grades about fire safety.

Firefighters Justin Semenero and Kyle Simmons. Kyle and Justin spoke about fire safety, fire safety planning, and firefighting equipment. They also told the children how to be safe if they are near a fire. The children watched as the firefighters put on all of their protective equipment and described the function of each item. Then each child had an opportunity to explore the fire engine, inside and out.

Do you have a fire safety plan in your home? This would be a great time to talk to your children about your plan if you haven't yet done so.

We are grateful to the Schell-Vista Fire Department, our neighbors on lower Broadway, for this wonderful learning opportunity!
See's Candy Fundraiser Underway

Our See's Candy Fundraiser  is an easy way to support the school -- the candy makes great gifts. Order forms are due back in the school office by Monday, November 4th.  Please contact Kirsten Flaherty at kirstennflaherty@gmail.com if you have any questions.
7th Grader Mikaela Zeiter
Completes Nike Half Marathon

Presentation 7th grader Mikaela Zeiter participated in the Nike Women's 1/2 Marathon with her mother Tonia last Sunday in San Francisco.  This was the tenth year of the event with 30,000 women participating. This was Mikaela's first time running 13.1 miles.  She and her mom finished in less than 3 hours and Mikaela sprinted to the finish line!
8th Graders Decorate Sugar Skulls for Dia de los Muertos

All grades are spending time in Spanish class preparing for the celebration of Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. Some grades are learning a traditional song about Dia de los Muertos and all are creating crafts and gifts of offering for this special occasion.  The 3rd grade will be helping to run the Day of the Dead Mass on October 30.
